It is interesting to find that we are contemplating if IR should change his style, and all that. Well, when IR made his entry into TFM in 1976, he was responsible for transforming the face of TFM from what it was earlier. Thereafter, for atleast 15 long years, he has carved and moulded the style of TFM (with the kind of changes that Suresh has mentioned above). In fact, this was a time when we had'nt got over the impact of one album that another would take us by storm. So, in this perspective, isn't it a little ironical that we feel right now that he badly needs a change of style ? That a man who has defined the style of TFM for atleast a decade and a half, and has in fact, been claimed to have been ahead of his times once, is being asked to change his style now, is rather thought-provoking. Well, what does this really imply ? Does it mean that times have caught up with him, that he is currently in danger of actually falling behind the times ? Or is it that his level of music has stopped progressing the way it used to, that we feel the absence of it ? Or worse, is it a fact that his standards have dropped from their consistent class of yore (save for a Guru or Yathramozhi, once in a while) ? Strange, isn't it ?

I feel that notwithstanding all this criticism,IR has changed his style a lot though the basic fabric of his music remains unchanged. In fact, what is meant by style? It is the way a composer structures his music. In the TFM context, style is a mix of the prelude(how the composer brings about the pallavi from the mood of the scene),the pallavi(how catchy and simple it is),the anupallavi(the way the note is brought back to the pallavi),the interludes(here again, the mood of the film has to brought in without taking aid of the singer and the way interlude bridges the pallavi and the charanam) and the charanam itself. This is a rather naive explanation of style.Anyone who has tried composing music will know that most of these things come naturally(people like Deva can compose like any other composer,he is gifted in this manner, that is a different issue). So expecting someone like IR who knows that his music has worked to change style is not justified. In fact, given a choice,I would want IR to forego whatever little, cosmetic changes he has made to his music, forget all his advanced synthesisers and give us the music he gave in say a Sindhu Bharavi,a Nenjathai Killathe or a Johny.I definitely feel that his fans would be really enthralled to hear him do that.
More than anything else,I want to put forth one point. Why this question of changing style arose? Is it because his music has become unpopular now?If that is the case, how come there are so many IR fans here who vouch for his music?

Sankaran,
What you say does make a lot of sense. I guess people are saying that IR needs to change his style b'cause he has not given music as in Johnny or NK for sometime now. Those were great innovations then and can be heard even today. They still sound fresh after 15years or more. This is the sort of music that has been missing from IR in TFM (KM and Malayalam movies exempted). Just check out the songs coming out nowadays. Songs for Keyyar films have been very mediocre (Kavalai Padate Sahodhara), songs for Rajkiran or Ramarajan are equally bad nowadays (Listen to Annan. The style, especially with the tabla section, has started to sound stale). My only wish is that he will give us music as in Johnny, NK etc. I dont mind him using synths or anything else b'cause he has great grip on the main melody (Ennai Thalata Varuvala). IR has so much more left in him but he is bogged down by Pandiarajan, Keyyar, Rajkiran, Ramarajan etc. that we are not getting the same standard of music that is being given by him for Malayalam movies. Hope things will change soon and we will start hearing the good old melodies.

Suresh,
Yes, all of us do need the "Johny" kind of music from IR once again. Well, in that case, perhaps the discussion should have been "Maestro Ilaiyaraja should not have changed style radically" !!!

lets hope IR start giving us the one like Mouna raagam/ Thalapathi/Manan/Muthal Mariyathai/Nayagan/Veera/Chinna Kounder/Agni Natchatiram/Manan Vasanai and many off his unbeatable mesmerizing songs. Pls not like Kangalil Vaarithayo which definately not to his standard. I am not asking him to be like ARR but maintain his class of his own. Pls don't tell he didn't try to deliver that type of ARR listen to the Masthana. I am not a musician or have a good knowledge about saranam and ragas but I love to listen to tamil songs very much.
I really enjoyed and till today I cry when listen to songs of nayagan and thalapathi. I reeally feel he not giving his best now and looking for a big break from him. As I said earlier let him give the type of songs given on the above mentioned movies.
Nowdays very seldom music fan understand the raagas and charanam used in a song. They just listen how good the music is. JEANS CDs is selling like hot cakes here in Malaysia and Singapore. As a TFM fan I loved and enjoyed all the songs. Someone said earlier on a GOOD MD is a the person who Knows the taste of the audience. Now the taste and with new technology of sound system Changes taking place in in TFM industry.
I would like to suggest why not IR explore the modern music but maintain the originality of his style. He did once when taking over from the great MSV and started a new era for the TFM
Let him do it again . We should move with time & the technology. I love his songs very much and still believe he is the best MD ever produce by the industry.

This discussion is totally unfair. Just take the songs in '97: Punniyavathi, Kadavul, Annan, Veerathaltu, Kadhaluku Mariyadhai, Vasugi, Devadhai, Raman Abdullah, Kizhakum Merkum etc. Listen to these songs with open mind. Still the melody IR produces is out of the world. The "jeevan" he creates in these songs are not seen in other songs. The only difference between IR in the past and IR now is that there is a group of people in the industry and media working deliberately to bring down Raja and promote someone else. Look at the publicity given to ARR's movies: they pack it with big name stars form Hindi, Mani Ratnam direction, some PR item or the other and build it up so that as a self-fulfilling prophecy peole buy CDs, see the movie, talk about it and make it a hit. For eg. people went ga-ga over "telephone mani-pol" in Indian. Just listen to IR's "Vanile Thenila" in Kaaki Chattai or "Ding Dong Ding" in Panakkaran for a similar situation song. IR has not only done the Indian type songs 10s of years before but in much better fashion. But in terms of pure quality of music I don't think IR needs to change anything. His music still outclasses anything else. Listen to India 24 Hrs. That is a Genius at Work. So guys! Hang on until the IR bashers are exposed to the limitations of the people they promote. This thing will all blow ovwr and people willrealize Raaja Still Reigns. He is the Best.

Exactly, more than the song (especially shankar and Kunjumon films ) there is toooo much hype abt it ... it makes people sway and listen to crappy music and take it upto the charts..!!!

u'r right KR.
I know there was a thread on India 24 hours (Ravi :any info ?).
I could get the CD only recently. Most of the pieces are of execellent class and few are unique and out of the world class ( should be universe?)
Eg:
No:7 :illusions. Just listen to the flute man (sorry no more words ....)
No:2 :Journey (Man vasanai yudan koodiya percussion)
Moreover the theme music comes through
different instruments in different forms invoking different emotions.Just incredible! (Man it is amazing, this man has still lot left in him).

One thing that strikes me in TFM-DF is that we are all here possibly cocooned in a shell. Sankaran says, if IR's music is so bad, how come there are so many of us here who swear by his music? Perhaps we and the general public do not share common tastes. Perhaps we are living in the past. Perhaps we value melody as music than a cacophony of instruments which assaults the ear.
And the general public with some enthusiastic help from Maniratnam, KB, Shankar et al, is doing its best to promote that kind of music.
I agree that IR has to change his style radically. He does not need to ape ARR with a "Mastana Mastana". He needs to change his style radically - back to the way he scored music in the 70s and 80s. We do not need an IR who is built by the media. We need an IR who is true to his own unique style of music.
Sorry, romba unarchi vasappattuvittena? :)
