A long time since I heard Madanothsavam ..
Chaturangam was from Visu ( based on one of his plays), a simple theme (how a girl can make or break a guy).. an interesting movie.
VJ sounds good, SBP as usual does full justice - good listening.

madhanotsavam was directed by SPM(I think)
Few years later Visu remade this story as 'thirumadhi oru vegumadhi'(srikanth-pandian,jaichitra-jeyshree,rajini-svsekar, pramila-kokila). The only change was there was no mother character(Played by Pandaribhai in sadhurangam) but there was a sister character(Kalpana)in TOV

I think Raja.M has mixed the movie name Madhanotsavam with the song . But there is actually a Tamil remaKe from Malayalam movie by that name with lovely , melodious songs by SaleelChoudary-SJanaki-KJYesudas combination.ThenMalar Kannigal(SJ and chorus) used to be one of our (my sister and mine ) fav songs we practised, broadcast by Ceylon Vanoli . It's a Kamal's early movie.

A coorection in IlayaRaaja songs that never made to movies.
Panchami - The song is not Pani Katrin kulumai - S.Janaki as mentioned.
It is Maargazhi maadam mun pani velaiyile sung by SJ in her usual sensous way with TVGoplalakrishnan. This wonderful song is based on kamaas raaga.

Song of the Day: ellOrum nalam vaazha from enga maamaa.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ellonalvaazh.rm
- A great number by MSV to conclude our week. The song has grand orchestration, acoustical piano giving a nice effect, excellent lyrics by Kannadasan, and good singing by TMS. It is also one of the rare songs that fit in three stanzas within 4 1/2 minutes.
Lyrics:

Sunday is Thaipoosam and is a mega celebration in Malaysia, spread over three days beginning tommorow, Saturday.
Huge congregations of people will be gathering at Batu Malai in Kuala Lumpur, Thanneer Malai in Penang and many other places throughout the country. In fact it is the largest congregation of people in this Muslim country!
Wouldn't it be appropriate if the SOFTD is a Thaipoosam song?

bb,
Wonderful song to end the week. The song is one wonderful example to prove MSV/TMS/KaNNadAsan combo.
song starts in a such a grand way. With piano and strings dominating the prelude. The song is set in a real fast tempo which can't be felt when u hear the song.Peopel generally quote "Mannil intha kaadhal anRi" for breath control, but I think this is a much tougher song. The meliflous flow(esp. the 3rd charaNam being so long) in TMS's voice is simply mind-boggling.I believe at those times TMS had to sing it in one shot.
abt. the lyrics....well what can I say...every-time I hear this song I just cant stop with once. I listen to it for atleast 15 times b4 I think of stopping.
Thanks once again bb

Superb MSV...This song who ever firt hears they will like it certainly right from the beginning to end. Especially the inter piece before third stanza...I can not express...only can be experienced. Excellent action by Shivaji, Excellent Lyrics by Kannadasan for the best tune of MSV. MSV Sir...your songs directly touches the heart...Can any one tell what is the Raaga of this song ?
Loving,

Was enga mama copied from the hindi movie bramachari or was it the reverse ?
Enga Mama had Chella Pillaigalam Pallyiley - an excellent song from TMS/MSV.

I just noticed that "Ellorum Nalam Vaazha" interesting structure.
1st Charanam and 2nd charanam are different tunes. These two together becomes the third charanam. That is why, third is a longer one.

In my opinion, Engamaama is MSV's, TMS's magnum opus. My personal fav in Engamaama is 'Naan thananthanikaatu raaja' , a very flamboyant number with very good music. Could anyone tell me where to access all the songs of Enga maama? Infact, 2 days back,I was trying to locate all the songs of this movie(I forgot the movie name and was unsuccessful)

What makes this song so memorable after so many
years?
I think it is the self pity of a misunderstood and lone person, expressed in it, that each of us can identify with(and take pleasure in?). How well the lyrics and tune and the singer's feeling have enhanced this emotion is the magic!
hero-with-a-piano-singing-to-his-lost-love is a very potential situation and has been (ab)used a
lot in film music, but in some places it shines
genuinely, like this one. THe other one is from
Apoorva Sahodarargal (Unnia nenaiche pattu padichen)
The pallavi melody is a gem: The first line is a joyous typical MSV flourish - the interval jumps El-Lorum Nalam-Vaazha and then see the meloncholy
immediately (naan vazha yaar paduvar). The alternation of the melody between excitement and introspection makes the pallavi very intriguing
and gives the mood of the song a new attitude slant.
Throughout the charanam, the tune so well fits the
lyrics, showing how well Kannadasan and MSV vibed
like one creative mind, understanding each other so well. I especially like another MSV stamp - surprising use of a new tone (Naan YAAR endru appodhu).
MSV must have got a new pianist on roll for Enga
Maama, I guess, even chellakiligalam has very good
piano solos and accompaniments.

you are very right malar, each of these songs
in less than three minutes give you a world of
new emotional experience, that is why these live longer than the movies, the stories and the people
who made it.
