There's 2 sections guys. One is an article and then the interview. The interview is very informative even if I don't agree with some things. There are also some never before seen pictures, at least, I have not seen them.

Kamesh,
You must understand that my knowledge of tamil is very limited. Please explain what 'dhoobam' means? Thank you!

Aruvi
Some of the pictures where also first time to me.
It is very heartening to see ARR, IR and MSV together in one picture. This forum has certainly something to learn from the picture.

Diamond ingeyum veylaiyai kaatteettaar !
I remember his misunderstanding with Ilayaraja after years of work.
Now, ARR is getting more popular in western music & doing lot of non-tamil film albums.
This guy VM realised that his list making songs won't work further & he will be axed soon. So he is making unnecesary mess in the good function.
The photo with ARR, IR & MSV is great and it is a treasure for all music lovers.
I do have same feelings of aruvi & Kamesh.
I am bored reading these type of interviews, always repeating ARR's history, his faith, soul blah .. blah ..
aLavukku meerinal amirthamum .......
These things make us to expect best from ARR. When he gives an average album, he gets fired by press & people.

The articles and interview were interesting.
VM should first improve his lyrics if he wants them to be heard. As the article quotes, the standard of lyrics these days is pathetic that atleast the music helps to make-up for its deficiencies.

A guy who spoils lyrics by including words like 'olive oil' etc. has no right to comment on ARR. in fact it is because of ARR that vairamuthu is getting all the limelight these days. I had the misfortune of hearing him blabber when I was in india recently , when I heard him speak in the muthalvan and later the kandukonden kandukonden cassete release functions. The other great artistes and directors there finished their speeches quickly while this guy continued to blabber for half an hour.
Even I like the photo of the 3 maestros standing together and sometimes photos like these convey a thousand words. Well, this photo, I suggest, should be on the main page of this site.

IMO...KK is one of the few albums where almost all the songs have been rendered nicely as far as the pronounciation and clarity of the words are concerned. I am really surprised that VM made his comment during the release of KK. My guess is he had some other diff with ARR and resorted to this back-stabbing.

APRM,
IMO, a few songs in KKKK suffer because of poor pronunciation.
Smiyaiyai has the singer (as usual) mixing up La and la; Na and na in many places. Ditto Sadhana Sargam in 'Konjum Mainakkale'. (honestly, the most ordinary song of the album)
Suttum Vizhich chudar, a great Bharatiyar song sung by Hariharan starts with SUTTRUM Vizhi (as in 'revolving')
KaNNaamoochi Enada is one song that's near perfect. After all, veterans Yesudas and Chitra are singing the number.
As for BAD pronunciation, nothing can come close to 'En SwasaKaatre' songs.
What was Vairamuthu doing during the recording of these songs? Shouldn't he have been around, listening carefully and making those corrections? Chumma singers-i BeNdu Nimirthiyirukka VeNdaam?
There's no point in blaming ARR alone. As for instrument overpowering the vocals, I agree he (the MD) is in control. But as far as pronunciation goes, it is VM, the lyricist who is to blame (just as he has failed many times earlier, to correct our own ARR's pronunciation!)

I dont think lyricists are invited to
recording sessions anymore. (or may be
ARR avoids them by recording at midnights!)
In any case, MDs have the final say
nowadays on what sounds how.
And ARR seems to consciously blur out
the 'la-La-zha' distinctions - in an
attempt to make the Thamizh songs
appeal to wider audiences ;) And
make Thamizh more accessible!
I was initially very annoyed by the
La->la mapping, but then we ourselves
have blurred Ra->ra, Nagaram Na->avan Na
in practice. Endru ennai naanae
thaeththikonden!

The Rediff article is in a very bad
taste, and openly mocks Vairamuthu.
It is not based on any facts and
uses imaginary people like
'source said', 'unit man'.
It is a shame for internet journalism.

I don't think VM has done any work on RamayaNa and mahabhArathA.....It 's vAli (pAndavar bhoomi )
rediff has just translated what was given in Jr.vikatan, this week....

Rjay,
I do feel irritated when the singers/actors can't pronounce properly. Take the case of seasoned actors, with otherwise good Tamil diction- like Naaser, Prabhu, Radhika... when it comes to 'Rendu Chizhi na and MooNu Chuzhi Na', and La and la, they just never get it right and get on my nerves.
S,
You are right. Looks like the 'author' of the article, Satyamurthy is not living up to his name.
He says: "His rendition of the Ramayan and the Mahabharat appear in Tamil magazines, and his collections of poems have appeared in fine print. "
Which we all know is incorrect. Valee is gonna be real upset.
Plus all the stuff that he has written is a straight lift from Junior Vikatan's latest cover-story.
I guess some of our fellow TFM surfers should freelance for sites such as Rediff and make some extra money. At least what they write wil be original.!!

I think VM makes sense in saying the excessive harmony overplays the vocals as it could be easily felt in both AP and KKKK. Also, the rendition by both Chitra and KJY become scanty sometimes in the song kanna moochi. As for as KJY is concerned, i felt the same with in the charaNam parts of pachchai kiLigaL thOLOdu. KJY's vocals were much clearer and listenable when he used to sing for IR. Also, the pronounciation glitch becomes discrete and conspicuous as he accentuates dhaniyAga illaiya in place of thaniyAga illaiya in kanna moochi yaenada . Eventhough this episode has sparked off a controversy and a state of contention, i hope it resolves quickly without leading up to another cold war. But, c'est la vie

rjay :
I think the lyricists are invited for recording sessions, atleast that was the case atleast in the past. VM himself has said how much he had to work to get HH pronounce words properly for "Tamizha tamizha" in roja... If the lyricts' presence is not a usual practice these days, VM should insisit that he be present while the recording is on... After all he is getting paid for his lyrics and his job is incomplete if he doesnt ensure that his lyrics are pronounced the way they are supposed to be said. Its not wise tpo cry foul later if he didnt do his work properly in the first place.
Neels/S : very true. Many of these rediff articles seem to be rehash of some articles in tamil mags and are poorly researched. I am sending a mail to rediff in this regard. If other DFers could send similar mails pointing out the mistakes, it might make a difference.

chandy, i just did..here's the copy
----------------------------------------
Patently poor reportage.. I wish Rediff validates reporters before allowing them a free rein of imagination. For starters,
Vairamuthu never has anything to do with versions of 'Ramayan' or 'Mahabharatha' in Tamil magazines. It's another lyricist
- Vaalee - who is currently penning 'Paandavar Bhoomi' in Ananda Vikatan (leading Tamil weekly; also runs 'Junior Vikatan' ,from whose recent cover story this report seems to be 'heavily inspired'). That final line "after all, Ilayaraaja had no great successes after his exit..." is hilarious and will straightaway qualify Sathiyamoorthy for a PR position at Vairamuthu's... Ilaiyaraaja's fine and doing well, thank you..
As a premier Indian portal, Rediff must focus on creating responsible content; not have people flick a newsmagazine from the stands, add masala to an already spiced-up story and upload it as a feature.
