Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...

Naaz
Where are the self-appointed torch-bearers of civility and decorum when you need them?
Where is the revolt against such repugnance?
Are the DFers here too self-absorbed to counter such hate-mongering?
I am still to hear one word of chastisement.
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone.
I have had many experiences in the last few months when I had to fight my own battles. I am sure you would have witnessed quite a bit.
Running away (sorry to say this) is nothing short of cowardice.

Naaz, don't feel bad about the lack of condemnation of bad-mouths. it is a case of sooriyan-a paaththu naai-kolaikkaradhu. they are absurd to say the least and absurdities are better left alone. be the sun and just ignore the dogs. childra pasanga, vittu thallunga.
and welcome back. looking forward to your participation.

Vani Jairam has nearly ruled KFM alongwith Janaki, hasnt she? I havent heard her too much in Kannada but I am mesmerised by her renditions in KAVIRATNA KALIDAS, BILI HENDTHI and one song in GANESH MAHIME by MSV. High pitch!
Vijaybhaskar once said that he had recorded a thumri with Vani before she had done her Guddi songs. So does this mean that this thumri with VB is Vani's first song and not the Guddi ones? Any idea whether this thumri is commercially available?

I heard this Andha Ezhu Naatkal song recently after a very long time.
Swara Raga sruthiyodu vilaydum Kaviye
PJ sings the malayalam part and Vani sings the Tamil part.Delightful song.(I am not for the MVD-VJ duet in the same movie)
Incidentally this song never featured in the movie or atleast when i saw it on DAY 1 at Kalaiarangam trichy.
This made me feel that Mandhara Malare (PJ -LRE) in Naan Avanillai -MSV must have been a PJ-VJ

Mandhara Malare is indeed by LRE.But it should have been by VJ.
I get the same feel with Oorgolam pogindra (Akkarai pachai) should have been by VJ.(Of course MSV compensated it by using VJ in a similar(?) tune, OOrayiram thiruvasagam unnodu naan pesuven)

Saravanan - Meisilirkudhu is an interesting composition. Thank you for reminding me. I can still recall the "chende" interludes in that duet. Another (similar, but without malayalam) duet is by SPB-VJ from Mouli's Vaa Indha Pakkam :"Ival Devadhai Idhaz Madhulai." Music:Shyam
(The same film had a popular hit "Anandha Dhagam Un Koondhal Pookkal Theerkkumo?" (SPB/SJ)

Naaz
Still probs with yahoo .
Anandha ragam is by deepan and SJ.Vairamuthu was in his Kavingnar state in this song.Jannal Kambi ..and all !Later he graduated to become Kavi perarasu to write oh!podu!
There was a VJ song in a Mouli s movie in which Srikanth plays a man caught between 2 wives!Fatafat was one of the heroines. Even after a serious brain storming i managed to recollect the MSV song which is like
Irandu veedu Irandu katil thoonga idamillai
Irandu nenjam Irandu Sontham bandha paasam illai
Any idea about the movie and song?
Chendai interludes ..apart from Mandhara malare and to some extent in Madhavi ponmayilal ( to depict padminin s anger) the instrument was not used effectively by our MDs.

Thanks for the data correction, guys! It's that wretched "listening" in memory thing again. I have not heard these songs, although I still get to hum them with the words all over the place.
Deepan Chakravarthi was another singer with potential who went by the wayside.
Movie in question, OISG : Ivargal Vithyasamanavargal.
I don't recall the song. A bold film though, all in the wake of Sila Nerangalil and other such.

Naaz,
your liking for Vani is only too well known. Don't you feel that her singing a lot of avoidable cabaret numbers for the likes of anuradha, jayamalini led to the glean wearing off vani. or did she take to singing such such numbers because she wasn't getting other songs. probably since late eighties! How many of such songs would she have sung. I heard a couple of them on Tv they were awfully bad.It is painful that the " ezhu surangal" singer had to sing such songs.

Vengayam - Thanks for addressing your query to me.
Yes, I do admire VJs abilities as a singer. She is one among the handful of singers whom I listen to with great attention and relish.
I can't really answer your question about how singers are chosen for "cabaret" numbers, or if singers who are (under)employed are happy for even the "cheap" scraps that come their way. I am aware that VJ has sung about a dozen or two so-called "night-club" numbers.
I think your "pain" arises from a clash of image(s.) VJ has (intentionally or not,) an association with "classicism" and "piety" and hence her name is intertwined with the Aboorva Ragangal and Shankarabharanams etc. But she is also a professional "singer" and I don't believe she has too much of a choice in the songs that came her way. See "Neerada Neram Nalla Neram" (Vaira Nenjam) and "Madhanotsavam Radhiyoduthan" (Sadhurangam) and "Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa" (Thangamagan) or "Thanimayil Yaar Ival" (Azhagae Unnai Aradhikkiraen) are all suggestive and "sexy" cabaret/contest songs. VJ I am sure is happy about these examples. Every singer has bagful of embarassing songs which they would disown very quickly if they could, (particularly if their singing career spans decades.) But this is not how a singer's true worth ought to be evaluated. Yes, VJ admittedly has her share of bad/mediocre/forgettable songs. But the songs that come her way are beyond her control. More importantly, as a singer when you are summoned for a recording, you don't even know what the song is 'til you sit down with the MD and arranger and the other singer(s) to rehearse the tune before the take!
I doubt singers have much say (as there are so many replacements, and so many people only too eager to take your place,) in FM. They take what comes their way, hoping ,I am sure, that the good stuff will rise and outlast time. The bad stuff will sink, and will quickly be forgotten. VJ has nothing to worry on that front.

on: Sun Jun 23 04:20:43 EDT 2002
Naaz, I agree with you absolutely- all singers including PS have had their share of such mediocre/bad songs- no one is an exception to this. It is, as you say, because we usually associate VJ with gems like Ezhu swarangal, Naathamennum kovilile, Kannan kovil paravai etc, that it comes as an unpleasant shock when we hear her crooning "Anybody can kiss me" (Vaa vaa pakkam vaa).
But,as you say, even some of her 'suggestive'numbers were nothing to be ashamed of- Nitham nitham nelluchoru and Manjal araikkum pothu are some more examples.
However whenever she sang such 'bad' songs, she also sang a lot of 'good' songs in the same period- as if to make up!
For example, if we take the year 1985, she sang some eminently forgettable songs like Ithu rosa poovu-Oru Kaithiyin Diary, Soda Soda- Mangamma sabatham, My dear, young lover- Jansi etc, and some mediocre songs like Aatathil naane - Paadum vanambadi, Aativecha aadavenum- Nalla thambi, Solli adipenadi- Padikkathavan, Kasthuri maane-Kolusu and Maalai mudhal kaalai- Unnai thedi varuven, but look at some of the great songs- the haunting Sogamey vaazhkkayin ragama from Thavam, the semi-classical Saranam saravanane from Aval Sumangalithaan, Rama naamam from Sri Raghavendrar,Isairajane from Kannirasi, Mari thirisooli from Mel maruvathoor aadhiparasakthi, Meisilirkuthu and Sri raman varukindra from Mookanaangkayiru, Konjum malar manjam from Janani,Pon udhadu ennum from Sugamana Ragangal,Thandhana thandhana from Oru Malarin Payanam, Then paayum velai from Powrnami Alaigal,Velli nila from Amudagaanam, Muthu muthu punnagayo from Sandosha kanavugal, Chinna nila from Nagam, Devi sridevi from Veli, Yaaro Yaaro from Panam pathum seiyum, many songs from Rajarishi, Navagraha Nayaki,Asha-- you'll realise that at any given time, the number of her good songs are much, much more than her bad/mediocre ones.
