There was a news segment
profiling Rahman in the
news magazine India this
week which was telecast
over channel 56 in Wash.
DC here (in 1995). Here are
some snippets from the
interview.
So sayeth ARR (verbatim):
"Directors - they want more music...People - they want more music...but...it is getting difficult to balance the quality and the quantity...But (smiles) as long as the fight continues and quality wins...its ok."
ARR's chief inspiration is his father Shekar (a music director too, who died when ARR was very young). ARR took to music when he was very young, played keyboard and guitar for "local rock groups" before joining Ilayaraja's troup and later turning to score ad jingles.
Thus spoke ARR:
"It is not a good past...(adds quickly) but that's ok. At the end of it all...during the climax... like when I was losing interest in life, you can say....everything started happening."
Quote
- "Nobody can be completely original...because the
notes are already there...from the notes we form a raag and from the raag a tune...it is a process. As far as possible, to my conscience, I try to be original...'
The reporter quoted ARR's main musical inspirations as
Ilayaraja and RD Burman.

ARR has made some statements here that are very interesting. He has acknowledged IRR and has also said stuff about copying. Please comment.
Here is the beginning of the list:

To GEETA:
Mam, the "Deep Forest yodel" you refer to was also used by Rick Blair, a black artist in the 50s, long before Deep Forest came on to the scene. The yodel you refer to is an ancient tribal sound, and nowadays you can also get the same sound from different audio mixers(Yamaha, Infinity etc.)Therefore, it is not a "copy". And if you want to call it a copy, it is copied from the ancient Maya tribes and not DEEP FOREST. for god's sake!!!! Wake up, guys.

Deep Forest as a group, copies tribal music and remixes it with pop elements to market it better. This 'thillAnA thillAnA' yodelling also appears in the movie 'The Island of Dr.Moreau'.

vijay: Please read the interview I copied at the top....here is what ARR said about copying...

pg & Narayanan: Please don't pick on me, I'm just trying to compile a list of copied/sampled stuff, so I used Thillana as an example, as it's been quoted many a time and it's a blatant sample example as it's been used note for note in the song, as it is in Deep Forest. If it was a sample, maybe he should have changed it a bit before using it....wherever it came from....
Rajaraman: Thanks for the list, come on Guys, lets add to it....

Geetha :
I am not picking on you, I just mentioned that this bit has appeared in the movie also. That's all I said. And IMO, it is a copy. (I watched this stupid movie bcos AV mentioned that ARR had copied this bit from the movie).

rAjA's copied works (other than those mentioned in the list) :
A song from yAthrA (malayAlam) copied from 'My Favourite Things - The Sound Of Music - Rodgers & Hammerstein).
A variation of this - poottukkaL pOttAlum - kshatriyan
Another variation of this is supposed to be in a Telugu movie.
kanavu kANum kAtchi yAvum - 100% copy of a Hindi song.
entha poovilum vAsam uNdu - Vivaldi's 4 Seasons
(Spring).
Oh Butterfly butterfly - the buzzing sound is inspired by The Flight Of the Bumblebee by Rimsky Korsakov. (Odd selection - butterfly doesn't make a sound like a bumblebee !)
ARR :
mercury pookaL - We will we will rock you - Queen - rhythm section.
romeO Attam pOttAl - I heard the beats in a Erols (ISP) commercial - who copied from where ? - or from the same sample ?
thenmERku paruvak kAtRu - same as above - I heard the beats on a commercial on FM radio in my car - probably from a sample.

PG:
I think that "endha poovilum vaasam" is inspired by a mandolin concerto by Vivaldi. I don't think that it is from "four seasons". There is definitely influence of four seasons in the following songs :
1) Oru Iniya manadhu (first interlude) - Jhonny
2) Paruvamae (second interlude) - Nenjathai Killadhae.
- From: Sridhar Seetharaman (@ 128.96.140.26)
on: Thu Jun 25 11:12:29 EDT 1998
Adding to this list. Copied works by Karthik Raja.
1) Yaaro idhu Yaaro from "ULLAASAM" - first few bars of the first interlude is a straight lift from Haydn's Trumpet concerto.
2) Hello Mr. Kaadala from "Naam Iruvar Namakku Iruvar". The pallavi is straight lift from "Hey Buenos Aires" from the musical "Evita". The meter is complete lift from the same song.

Good topic I am Inspired..
ARR:
1. "Chinna Chinna Aasai" - Based on Nusery Rhymes by Linda Seager(sweden)
The cassette is available in Chennai.
And the music score is no different from Jamaican Reggae. There 100 songs like this in Jamaica.
(FYI - I am currently in Caribbean Island). ARR
Rustic Humming makes the difference in the song.
2. "Rukumani Rukumani" Humming lifetd from-The Profiler (English Rock band Group)
3."Pudhuthu Vellai Malai" - BEAT is a copy of Car Commericial (more than one).
4. "Tamila Tamila" - The Lead piece sounds like
one of the Bryan Adam song. I am not sure (HELP!). A similair piece comes as BGM in Gentleman. The scene is when ARJUN's MAKE_UP clothes are shown in top of the hill.
5. "July matham vanthal" - Th Guitar piece is
Direct lift from Khaleed song Thilabee... Thilaybe..( AIBUM DiDi)
6. "Kaadhalikum pennin kaikal thotu.."(Kaadhalan)- A direct lift from IR song "Poovin meethu theenai alli" from December Pookkal or January Pookkal. ARR made IR's violin as a Humming....(famous)and altered the tune little bit with ARR flavour.
7. "Muqala.. Muqabula.." - Starts with For few dollars more orchestration and the BELL sound of
Good Bad and Ugly. A tune and BEAT based on
IR's "Yeee.. Unnai thanney, Nee Entha ooru.. Enodu Aadu.." FILM:Kaadhal parusu. The BEAT is almost same with ARR flavour.
Then song turns into typicall RD BURMAN mode and
stays there. After the end of vocal and when animation starts, there comes BEAT of Samantha FOX(Album: Satisfaction), Then tranform directly to DR. Alban BEATS of Matha O..Ya..Ae Oh.... and ends with it.
Somebody saying in some thread about Multiple Inheritance of DEVA. Wow! This song is Excellent Example Mutilple Inheritance of ARR (GREAT!!)
8. "Ithu sugam.. sugam.."- vani Jairam, Film: Vandi chollai sinarasu.
Orchestration based on IR song "yemm theba thasavuraa..." Film: Ashwamedham (Telugu).ARR never forgets to add his flavour.
9. "Putham Pudthu bhoomi" - Car commerical for Volkswagen
10. "Thenmerku paruva kattru" - BEAT and Squibble
sound from Dr. Alban's ONE LOVE.
11. "Kaduu.. pootta Kadu.." -Sung by BharathiRaja the start music is again from Dr. Alban (ONE LOVE) rustic african sound.
12. "Palghatu machanuku pattuna..." from May matham. I heard this tune some where couldn't find till now. Long standing mystery for me.
13. "Super Police.." (Teluge movie) BEAT directly lifted from Dr. Alban Matha O..Ya..Ae Oh.... Here ARR didn't moderate as he did in muqala.. muqabula..
14. "Telephone manipol..." - INDIAN, The Second interlude (rustic fulte like) is from ENIGMA.
15. "No problem.. " sung by ApacheIndian is directly lifted from Caribbean band SQUARE-ONE, with as usual small changes.
16. "Yedu da..antha suriya mellam" - BEAT based
on BONEY M Album: Booonooonooous.
17. "Venilavay Venilavaee.." -(Minsara Kanuvu)
The Music, sound , Humming all based on Boney M song "The African Moon" Album: Booonooonoous. It was first lifted by RD Burman. He already customized it for INDIAN audience(its a Amitabh Film). So it was easy for ARR to improvise??. So it became "The INDIAN moon" (Vennila, Chanda) Interesting Isn't it??.
Apart from all these ARR has Here and there is DR. Alban touch in kaadhal desam and KennyG in Duet.
I will post some more on ARR later.
NOW
IR :
1. Famous Darling..Darling from BoneyM sunny.. sunny
2. "Ninayvoo Oru Paravai"(Sivappoo Rojakkal). The
First interlude is based on For a Few dollars more theme music.
3. "Meen Kodi theyril Manmatha rajan"(film:??)
The starting music and even rythm(to some extent)is based on Osibisa Album:??. Bab segal also made tune(Thanda Thanda Pani) based on Osibisa song.
4. A Song in Engayyo Keta Kurral (Rajini) is based on BoneyM . Not able remember both the songs. (HELP!)
5. A song in Muthal Vasantham by Ramya and
Pandiyan is based on Hugomontenegor Orchestra
(Oscar Winner in 1969)
6. "Aasa athikam vachuu" -( Marupadiyum) This songs first interlude is based on the same above song.
7. "Nooru varsum..Intha mappilayum ponnum.."(KamalHassan & vijashanthi film). The tune totally lifted from Hindi film acted by Amitabh ( Mere Angane mein tera kya kaam hai, (Especially this line) Jiski biwi moti uska bhi bada naam hai).
8. "Ayiram thamarai mootukalae.. vanthu Ananda kuumikal.." - Alaykal Oyvathilay based on
village temple tune( yanna(Elephant) varuthu parungamma, athu aasinju(shake)varuthu parungamma).
9. "Kaadhal theen Eduka varadha..Kanni poo mudika.." - Karthik and suhasini film (name ??).
BEAT lifetd from JAM (Dangerous) More of Karthik Raja Effect. I am sure he scored the music.
Time is running out for me. I will post later....
Inspired,

HI,
How does our busy mds have time to find out this bits and pieces of Western music and incroporate it in thier song.....
----> 50% coincidence.., only 5% of the songs are copied.by our mds,
Most songs put here were already discussed here.long time ago by us.
Regarding Beats - all the beat loops are available on CD, you can also use them., DR alban band can also use them.,. AR can also use it...
