It seems Saathiya is on top of the charts right from day 1.....

LETS FACE it. There isn't anyone like A. R. Rahman on the Indian
music scene. He is simply the best and his audios sell like hot
cakes. Saregama and Rahman have come together once again
with "Saathiya" the Hindi remake of the Mani Ratnam's musical love
story "Alaipaayuthe". Rahman has sprung a surprise as it has once
again kick-started the sagging sales of audios, especially in
Northern India. Said K.V.Ramaswamy, Business Head (South)
Saregama: "It has become a rage and from day one it is on the top of
the charts." The feeling of being in the midst of a musical odyssey
is consolidated by Gulzar's expressive lyrics. The title track
of "Saathiya", which is sung by Sonu Nigam is the highlight of the
album. But Rahman fans in Chennai say that the original sound track
in Tamil was better than the Hindi version. After all, some of
A.R.Rahman's best tunes have been made for Mani Ratnam. Nearly 40 per
cent of the original has been remixed to suit the Hindi market.
Rahman has himself sung a new song "Mera Yaar Mila De.." in the
album. Saregama and Rahman has come out with a winner that may become
the number one of 2002, if the Vivek Oberio-Rani Mukherjee film
releasing on December 6 turns out to be a hit.

Her Majesty attends a sparkling gala performance
The Queen's visit to Bombay Dreams

Her Majesty The Queen, who is patron of the British Red Cross,
last night attended a special British Red Cross Gala performance
of BOMBAY DREAMS at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
Her Majesty was greeted by the composer of the hit musical, A R
Rahman and the producer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The audience also
included a host of celebrities, including the author of the book,
Bombay Dreams, Meera Syal, lyricist Don Black, director Shekhar
Kapur as well as the likes of model Jodie Kidd, actors Sanjeev
Bhaskar and Nigel Havers, designer Linda Barker, and former news
broadcaster Angela Rippon.
The evening, which was kindly sponsored by Bhs, aimed to raise
vital funds for the work of the British Red Cross in the UK and
overseas. Following last year's earthquake in the Indian state of
Gujarat, the British Red Cross has been working closely with the
Indian Red Cross on a number of projects including a nationwide
disaster preparedness programme and the reconstruction of primary
health centres and community facilities.
Sir Nicholas Young, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross,
says: "We are honoured and delighted that Her Majesty The Queen
attended this special performance of Bombay Dreams. It was a
wonderful evening, which has helped raise much needed funds for
our work throughout the world."
Her Majesty also met the cast of BOMBAY DREAMS after the
performance. Raj Ghatak, who plays Eunuch Sweetie in the show said
of the experience: "It was quite overwhelming to meet The Queen,
and to be honest I didn't know whether to bow or curtsey!"

Saathiya

Mumbai, November 7

Bigger Picture
Anyone who keeps a track of Indian film soundtracks - and by that one
means not just Hindi films - would have heard some of these melodies
sometime or the other. The reason: 'Saathiya' that stars Vivek Oberoi
and Rani Mukherjee is a remake of the R Madhavan starrer 'Alai Payuthe'
that ended up being a huge success down South. But for those who keep
their eyes and ears open for Hindi film music and just that, this album
will be a real revelation.
One special quality of music composer A R Rahman comes to the fore once
again. Perhaps the most intelligent user of voices in the country
today, he makes Sonu Nigam do the title track to manifest certain
hidden facets of the singer's voice that most other directors fail to
do. Sonu, it has been seen, is generally used as a Mohammed Rafi
substitute by most Indian composers. But not by Rahman, who makes him
sing in a completely individualistic manner that leaves a distinct
impact on the listener.
Chupke Se's original version was a huge hit in the South. The Hindi
version of this exceedingly melodious number in which Sadhna Sargam's
performance holds the key promises to fare similarly. Aye Udi Udi Udi
sung by Adnan Sami is yet another number in which the singer's voice
has been most intelligently. For Asha Bhosle fans, this album has a
real treat called 'Chori Pe Chori' in which the lady proves once more
why she is capable of giving coaching classes on melodious singing to
people four decades younger.
The album of Saathiya is a must for Hindi film music buffs who have not
heard too many top rate soundtracks in recent times. This reviewer
genuinely believes that the album's copies will disappear from the
shelves really fast irrespective of the film's fate at the box office.

It’s tough to get Maqbool Fida Husain talking if he’s in a foul mood. Still, quiz him on his latest movie and the maestro’s mood lightens up. Meenakshi – A Tale of Three Cities, which releases on December 27 this year, has been directed and written by Husain. Going by the flop Gaj Gamini two years back, we are keeping our fingers crossed. “Tabu fits the role and it’s written keeping her in mind. I’ve also written a qawalli and A. R. Rahman has given the music,” he says.

Kalam's song to spell out his vision for India
NEW DELHI: This year's Children's Day will be different for over
1,200 children from all over the country as they assemble at Vigyan
Bhavan in Delhi on Thursday to hear President A P J Abdul Kalam spell
out his "Vision for India".
Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), A R Rahman
has been roped in to conduct the music at the function. Rahman has
composed the music for the song Ignited Mind, written by the
President.
Schoolchildren of all age groups will sing the National Anthem and
another of the President's songs, National Prayer, translated in
Hindi.
After his address, Kalam will have a half an hour interactive session
with the children. He will conduct the session, the time for which
may be extended.
Apart from a select gathering of corporates, children from around 800
Delhi schools, including the Kendriya Vidyalayas, Government-aided
schools and public schools, as well as from 10 states will attend the
function.
The function is the third in the 'Children and Youth' series
organised by the CII. Earlier, a painting exhibition for children
from Baramulla was organised and six schools in Lucknow were rebuilt.
Dilip Chenoy, deputy director general, CII, says, "In his keynote
address, the President plans to share his dream as underlined in his
book India 2020, Vision for the Next Millennium with the children.

Chacha Kalam gives kids a treat
- By Our Special Correspondent
New Delhi, Nov. 14: On Children's Day, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam gave 1,400 children from across the country the experience of a lifetime.
At a function organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries here at Vigyan Bhavan, the President climbed down from the stage brushing aside security barriers and mingled freely with the children and answered their questions that ranged from the utility of nuclear weapons, ways of ending insurgency, diverting defence funds for development and whether he was satisfied with his life after becoming President of India.
The programme started with a scintillating song composed by young maestro A.R. Rahman. The lyrics for the song were taken from President Kalam's book Ignited Minds and his poem Song of Youth.
As a choir of about a dozen Mumbai schoolchildren, who were trained by Rahman in a short five days, sang his lines "Small aim is crime, we are running out of time," the President was seen nodding appreciatively. After the performance, he rushed to shake hands with Rahman and the choir. "Today, Rahman has given a song to the country," the President said. Later, he made all the 1,400 children recite the Song of Youth with him.
Right from the start, Dr Kalam set protocol aside. He refused to deliver his keynote address from the dais, and kept walking up and down the stage while delivering the speech extempore with the help of some slides. He did not read the from the prepared speech that was circulated to the media and corporate leaders present. Finally, he decided to get down from the stage, giving a hard time to his security staff.
In one of the significant replies to one of his questioners, the President said that while India had nuclear weapons it had pledged not to use them first against anybody. "But to defend our nation we may have to use it. Our neighbours have nuclear weapons. We have to ensure the security of our people and the country," Dr Kalam said.
The President's message to the children was clear : "To become leaders of tomorrow, you have to work hard today; excel in your studies... I feel when young minds are ignited, it will be a powerful resource... Behind failure there may be several reasons but behind success, there is only hard work."
