These are the great lines of Kaviyarasu Kannadasan in the movie Ratha Thilakam where he acts in the movie singing these lines. ( Song.. Oru Koopayilae yen kudiyiruppu)
What a visionary he was ? Indeed, he is NIRANDARAMAANAVAN.
I share some of my observations about Kavingyar. I want all the fans of HIM to join this discussion and add more quality material in praise of his great works.
This is the only way we pay tributes to this GENIUS.
WILL WE EVER GET BACK A KAVINGYAR LIKE KANNADASAN ??

Thanks for the info, Rajam.
Btw, a law student friend of mine in Malaysia visited TMS at his house last year with the hope of getting some bits on kaviarasar. After the usual formalities, this friend inquired about his relationship with kaviarasar. It seems TMS put him off with this statement - "since you are in my house you must talk about me and me alone and nobody else". He steadfastedly held on to this principle throughout the short meeting. My poor friend just could not extract any info on kaviarasar!
Even when TMS was down here for the "Tribute to Kannadhasan" event in September 2002 he spoke about himself only. The bits he spoke about kaviarasar was construed as belittling the latter which evidently irked the audience at large.
Okay, so much for TMS and back to kaviarasar.
When kaviarasar was in the recording room after writing the song "En vaanile Orey vennilla" ('Johnny' 1980) he observed that the singer, Jansi, pronounced 'orey' with a short syllable. He quickly intervened and asked her to emphasise the 'orey' and went on to tell her the difference between pronouncing with a short syllable and a stretched 'orey'. The stretched 'orey' made a difference as it implies possesiveness although the moon is common to all.
Everyone in the audience, including Ilayaraja, had a short course in Tamil pronounciation at the studio!
Will be back again on 1/7/03 folks, bye for now!

Hi folks!
I will be in Chennai on July 18 night for a meeting. Would it be possible to meet kaviarasar's fans in tfm domiciled in Chennai? If so kindly indicate via this page as something is definitely amiss in my e-mail communicative address. Many of them are complaining so.
However, you can try mailing at raj_k65@yahoo.com.sg or santhi_raj55@yahoo.com and should you fail then kindly post in this page.
I assure all you folks that when I return to Malaysia (25/07/03) I will load you all with the many unpublicised and interesting stories of our kaviarasar. The fact is that my fingers are itching to tap the info right away but due to want of time and pressing official duties I am unable to do so.
Hope to hear from you Chennai folks within the next day or two so that I can make adequate time provisions to spend with you all during my short stay over there.

the talk of the weekend was silambu and kaaveri, thanks to a great SOTD. would like to know about kavinjar's affiliation towards these two. I had read an old (reproduced) article written by him as a reply to Maa. Po. Si's article that 'maangalyam and thaali kattuthal' existed in Silappathikaaram days. Kavinjar's essay proved it otherwise. sure he must have touched Silambu and kaaveri at many other times too. can senior dfers share some info...

Hello All,
Tomorrow is Krishna Jayanti and it is a
coincidence that I stumbled on this
wonderful thread on Kannadasan. Thank You so
much Mahendra and all others! It is a real treat!
Kavignar was in fact a seer as Mahendra observed
..an enlightened saint. I have read his "arthamuLLA indhu matham" several times. Can anyone bring God and spiritualism to the common man the way Kavignar did?
I grew in the 70s listening to Ilangai vaanoli (Ceylon radio). They had so much affection..so much respect for him. The radio always addressed him as "kavignar" or "kavi arasar". I still recall the song "avan pOrukku pOnaan, naan pOrkaLam aanEn" with a beautiful explanation by Abdul Hameed.

Avan Porukku Ponaan
Naan Porkalam Aanen
is from Vaazhkkai vaazhvatharkey.
sung by P.Suseela
The song is imediately followed by naan paadiya ppadal mannavan kettan padayudane Vanthaan by PBS and PS.
Picturised on Gemini Ganesan and Saroja Devi, for a stage show. It is supposedly one and the same song in the film, but in vinyl record they appar as two seperate songs.

Naan paadiya paadal mannavan kettan padayudane vandhan
en vaadiya nenjai mannan arindan malarudane vandaan
is a superb duet, a haunting melody with the evergreen VR touch. The pallavi is not repeated till the end, if i am not mistaken. It's a unique song in the VR collection

I woul like to quote the greatest ever lines from Kannadasan. Itz from KARNAN
" Senchotru kadan theerkka seradha idam serndhu vanjathhil veezndhayada , Karna , Vanjagan Kannanada , karnaa... Vanjagan kannanada"
"Thaikku nee magan illai.. thambikku annanillai... oor pazhi etrayada.. Naanum.. Un pazhi kondenada.. karna .. Naanum Unpazhi kondenada."
This is the best ever song by kannadasan I feel . it starts like " Ullatthil Nalla ullam.. Urangadhenbadhu"...
All the songs he wrote were regarding humans and sung by human charachters in the film.
But this song is sung by the god himself. That too.. in this song the God critisizez himself as the sinner.
What a great poet.. what a great song...
KUDOS to Kannadasan, Seerkali & MSV.

Hi folks!
Nice to be back again after a long spell.
Hope everybody is in the same spirit as ever when discussing kaviarasar. I was a bit disappointed that I could not meet up with those who are Chennai-based when I was there for a week although notification was given.
I took time off to visit TK Ramamurthy, Muktha Sreenivasan, Thirunaavakarasu of Vaanathi Pathipakam and Kanmani Subbu (kavaiarasar's eldest son by first marriage and also a Tamil film industry semi-veteran) to exchange pleasantries as well as info on kaviarasar.
Kanmani Subbu narrated so much info including private ones which of course cannot be publicised. He was with me for two consecutive days well into the wee hours of the mornings although he was terribly busy with a new tv mega serial schedules of which he is the director.
The tv and radio of my hotel room were on the 'on' mode for background music although we were busy talking. Incidentally, both these nights kaviarasar's songs were aired with his signature portrait smile clipped from the song 'Paramasivan kazhuthil irunthau..'in Sun TV and FM broadcast. It was as though his spirit in celluloid took part in our deliberations!
Another co-incident was that week's Kumudham Junction weekly carried a cover page with an unique photo of kaviarasar posing with his two wives (taken in early fifties)and a narration by Gandhi Kannadhasan. When I visited Kanmani Subbu in his house the following day for breakfast he handed me the mag and I got hold of Ponnama Achi (Kanmani's mother)who is the only surviving wife of kaviarasar and who was staying with him to autograph it. She was as jovial as ever (remember the "Thaalayam poo mudichi....Ponnamma" song ['Bhaga Pirivinai']which was dedicated to her?) I had had met her earlier in Singapore (1996)in her youngest son's ( a Singapore PR) house for an interview.
Kanmani Subbu related an incident which I would like to share without going into details.
Kaviarasar had a tiff one early morning with one of his eldest sons and his publisher-friend over the publishing rights of his novel which was serialised in Kumudham earlier. After this stand-off he went to one of the assigned studios to do lyrics with Kanmani Subbu following him (after Panchu Arunasalam's incident it was Kanmani Subbu who filled up as his assistant in lyrics).
At the studio MSV was already present with his harmonium and when kaviarasar was told the story situation immediately he uttered the pallavi "Sothanai mel sothanai pothumadaa sami" ('Thanga Pathakkam' 1974). Kanmani Subbu, as usual transcribed the whole song while it was dictated and passed it to MSV after getting the endorsement of kaviarasar.
According to Kanmani Subbu traditionally, song tunes are composed on the first stanza only but in this case MSV was trying out different tunes basing on the last line of the last stanza, to wit, "...idipole pillai vanthaal madi thaangumaa". He was emphasising this part of the lyrics so loud and crying which was very unusual.
While the composition was going on Shivaji who was at a shooting in the adjacent studio room quitely came and took his seat amongst them during a break. He did not utter a single word but was clearly seen in a pensive mood with a tinge of sadness. He placed his right forefinger on the right side of his cheek and stared blankly at MSV (The style was imitated by Kanmani Subbu to me).
Kaviarasar was seen puffing away a cigarette also in a melancholic mood. Suddenly he saw these three senior citizens shedding tears which was also unusual. Only later did Kanmani Subbu learn that both MSV and Shivaji had had some sort of misunderstandings and arguments (private) with their respective sons that particular morning too!
Kaviarasar's song befitted the actual life situations of these three gentlemen who were also involved in this film. Could there be any other reason for this song to be popular and full of life even today?
More next folks!
