Just a quick review on my first listening of the songs.
1. Vellai pookal
a very slow, sweet ballad sung by Rahman himself.
The instrumentation is very minimal.
Theres no percussion in this song, accompanied by a bass and guitar(s) acoustic and elecric ? and a flute for intraludes.
2.Nenjil Jil Jil (Kannathil mutthamittaal)
Sung by Jayachandran and Chinmayee (she has a beaut' of a voice), the track opens with the BGM that's used in KM site flowing into the "nenjil jil jil...intro by Jeyachandran and then Chinmayee sings a large portion of the song and Jeyachandran sings the chourus line.
Very intresting chord progressions, alternative string accompaniments, a blend of carnatic in the stanzas. very nice
3.Sundhari
sung by a big group of singers, the song opens with an accordian (?) solo follwed by a guiter riff that breaks off Hariharan follwed by Sujatha
and the chorus, the arrangement is very Spanish and mexican in it's sound and has a very distinctive style. Great syncopation and off beats.
4.Senyore Senyore
opens with a male chorus with a aws' harmony and breaks off into a kind of (i mean kind of !) Bailaish dance song, nice, short and sweet.
5.Vidai kodu engal naade
opens with a bass drum with M.S.V singing the start of line "Vidai kodu engal naade" followed by Balram and Minckam singing followed by the chorus and then a intrelude (flutes?) followed by a chorus, some nice arrangements here, M.s.V singing gets a bit too high at times, but then again, it's a meloncholy song about loss and leaving and it's beautiful that had me humming the tune after the first listening,Febi and Rehna sing in the second intrelue and each get solo lines, nice to hear Rehna sing after her malai mali song from Choklet a completely different genre and styled song.
6.Kannithil muthamittal(chorus version)
Jeyachandran sings this song supported by a young chorus, the ochestration and accompaniment is pretty much the same, when listning to it again after hearing the first version the chrous line is very catchy and had me singing along.
a nice and neat album.all the songs appeal to me.
I wish there was a female version of Vellai pookal as well.
looking foward to detailed reviews and others opnions.

are we discussing about the same movie or what?the songs sound so dispirited ,lacklustre-I cannot beleive this is a ARR score for an MR movie.only song worth writing home is kannathil mutamittal-less said aboutseynora and the likes.like someone said in

//Very disappointing, if the songs are not for mass appeal , then are
they meant for the divine listening after weed-smoking?//
sums it up succintly-ARR fans seem to be clutching at straws-PP is thousand times better!

Oh my god!!! I just heard KM songs and i couldn't believe that some people are critising it. They are awesome!!!!!
I am no a.r rahman lover i just love music and these songs are great!!! The lyrics have so much meaning. For those who have heard it in raaga.com the music sounds blurred. When i put it loud i cant hear anything except mummbling. So if you really want to hear the songs i recommend you buy the cd or tape.
There are some people here i know are a IR or HJ or YSR fan and proberly haven't heard the songs and just critising it for the fun of it. If you are dont...give it a go. After listening to Red songs i thought they were decent but after KM those songs sound so crap!
I hated PP and ali arjun but a.r rahman is back with this soundtrack!!!!

O.K. album . Good to hear jayachandran again.
Vellai pookkal , sundari and the title song are good. the other two don't catch your attention the first time you listen.
The title song "kannathil muthamittal" reminds me of "boli rey papihara" from Guddi.

hi guys..
well let me see what i can say about rahman album ..and YES i am IR fan ..BUT not ARR hater..
1. "vellai pookal " will be a surefire winner..the lyrics are amazing...and rahman has sung it in a low base....good singing...but question is whether he should have sung that ...he is really good in songs which require high pitches... Harish ragavendra would have been a better choice...but off course ...its time we heard rahman sing..its been ages since he sang a tamil song.... any song rahman sings is gonna be a hit thats for sure..
digression : rehman must have felt very uneasy at the way things are going and all muslims being branded as terrorists..he might have taken this opportunity ...if thats a case ..then its really a great attempt.
2. sundari ..is an inovative attempt...certainly wont be liked in the first hearing.... it will be like "yaaro yaarodi" from alaipauthey...after the picturisation of the song...and we all know mani...he willl be terrific in that...this will be a hit...but wouldnt stay in mind for long..
3.Kannathil muthamitai... mani has another winner at hand ..the female voice is terrific...jayachandran returns with a bang..i must say...when we have female voices like this ..i dont know why MD's today are hell bent on using singers who dont know tamil..really a hurting fact ...but kudos to rehman ..for introducing a new singer again!!
4. signore" is a singalese folk song...much in the lines of "surangani surangani"... the song almost has the same shades of the song..a teasing song..really... will definitely slow down the tempo as " september madam " no clue as to how mani is going to handle this... who knows...just when people were about to write him off ..he delivered "alaipayuthey".. rehman could have come up with something "jumbalaika" but then fitting the story line...the song is very much singhalese....
4. vidai kodu engal nadu.... who knows this might become the national song of the tamil elam ..should that happen.... somebody has really felt that when writing...it really moves anyone.. rehman has achieved the unthinkable... one wonders how he came with such a tune.. and the lyrics simply stunns you...though may not vibe well with the indian audience ..its gonna rock the srilankan nation ..and tamils in particular..and to think mani is the director ..the picturisation is gonna move ur heart...tell u what sue me if anyone walks out of the theatre during this song..
"kanathil muthamittal"... jayachnadren is having a cakewalk here..good choice of singers..rehman is getting his groove in carnatic these days...
well certainly worthy of buying...it needed a mature score..and rehman has exactly given that...he has kickstarted the new year .... its very pleasing as a music lover... good tamil ..good lyrics... god bless
hats off rehman!!!!
