Does " chanda rey chanda rey" (sapnay) match up to the visual beauty that "vennilavey vennilavey" (minsara kanavu) evokes? For that matter are hindi lyrics of tamil dubbed movies of the same calibre as the original? Or are they better?
Anyway, how ARE they written? Does the director brief both the lyricists on the situation and let them come up with their own lyrics or does one of them write and the other transcreates ? Speculate here....

Hi,
Good that somebody did bring this topic. I certainly feel that THE PRESENT DAY HFM lyrics are absolute crap. But with the advent of ARR and some more I cannot see the oringinal lyrical expertise of Kannadhasan these days in TFM too. We should accept that VM, Vaali are also writing some crap lyrics like for eg in Indhiyan
"Thinnuda enna mennuda"
"Bujjimma " etc. Lyrics in both hindi and tamil are crap but its better of in tamil cos u still get some good lyrics whereas u dont even get a chance in Hindi. I think Srikanth started of with the lyrics and ended with the music. Ofcourse HFM is all hyped and infact a singer like Kumar Sanu if given a chance could never come to light in TFM. I had always thought that SPB was such a flop in Hindi and today we see almost all of the Hindi Play back singers in Tamil. Is it bcos of ARR's tactic of trying out new voice or is it VM's and Vaali's lyrics that has probably one or two tamizh words in every sentence?. I think that a mix of both is the reason, but Iam happy that we are more tolerant than Hindi film music fans in accepting this as a novel attempt. But I think its been stretched a little beyond the threshold. The reason why Hindi film music is popular has more to do with the audience and the reach it has compared to what Thamizh has. I think except for TamilNadu and the few tamizh makkal who live elsewhere( I think predominantly Thamizh's born and brought up in TN and have resided for quite some time in TN ) are the ardent fans of TFM. But if u step into the nearest neighbouring states u would find Hindi songs more popular. That doesnt undermine the regional film music. Infact I owuld go to the extent of saying that even Thamizh film music does not have the pure classical touch and techincal content of Malayalam film music which has since its inception has been rooted in classical music and still is consistent, but doesnt that make u wonder why it has not been popular given these traits of MFM. So finally it all boils down to the fact that things that are new attractb attention so "Internet", "Computer", "Silicon Graphics" can become invougue but I guess not for long. The use reason why ARR is such a smash hit is more because he has got variety better than any other Hindi MD( i think one should credit Jatin-Lalit ) for some original scores. Gone are the days of LP,RD,SD SJ, SC etc who where very original. I hope that this trend does not get into TFM. I am sorry to have digressed into FIlm music when we were supposed to talk about lyrics.
Bottomline : I feel that HFM lyircs were good and there is very bad need for some body good to write decent lyrics. But at the same time we should also accept that there is a disturbing trend in our film music too, which should be curbed, on or two is enough for a variation. I find this a significant trait of VM whenever he tries to write for ARR, people could counter saying that when the Music and the situation being mod warrants such lyrics, but doesnt that seem to be a pardox when Mr.Thamizh kudimagan is vehement about changing even vehicle registration plates. Another thought that seems to be quite a paradox, though related but not quite pertinent to the topic, We have a lot of hue and cry about Sanskrit words being introduced into TFM when we go all out to embrace English words. We resist the idea of using one of the national languages but can with gay abandon adopt a foriegn language. Mr VM are u listening?..
I think I said a lot of things not pertaining to the topic. If it really does disturb the fans of this thread Iam really very sorry. I get carried away when it comes to such controversial topics of discussion

Javed has written the lyrics for Jeans, and there is much less English used. The lyrics are mostly decent translations of the essence of the song, not just the words. For instnace he's replaced "50 kg Taj Mahal" with "Chalta Phirta Taj mahal" (roughly meaning "nadamaadum Taj Mahal").

I think the topic is how do lyrics compare in films dubbed/remade in Hindi from Tamil. If the discussion is going to be about the quality of HFM lyrics in general.. you know what. :-)

In the interest of keeping this thread alive, my posting referred only to the dubbing of Jeans (except for the last bit). Karunai ayya, nettrikannai thirandhu vidatheer :--)

Amma,
another example when 'Mere sapnon ki Raani' was remade into tamil as 'Ninaithen Vandhai'. The Hindhi version song 'Yeh Pyar .. Yeh Pyar ..' is only moderate. Where as the tamil version 'Kadhal..., Khadal... ' is much superior and DEVA has done extemely good job in adding our Nadhaswaram. See here hindhi version could not do anything with Shenoy or any other instrument to please that much. Look for more...

Amma,
when "Avvai Shanmugi" was remade as 'Chachi 420' , I was looking for the equivalent of the song 'Poovukulum Iruppandi ..' in 420 , but it did not even feature!( I saw 420 in Video, so I donot know if there is really an equivalent song and the cassette I saw did not have it!, Can anyone tell me ?). But at the same time, the title song 'Chupadi Chupdi Chaaaa Chi , Chupadi Chadhi..' is good and the music in between dipicts the real maratah soldier like character.. I like that..

Tu Tu Tu Tara was copied by rAjA's (illegal) retailer in HFM - Anand Milind in the film Bol Radha Bol.

I am deleting all lines that refer to HFM alone. If any one wants to continue along this vein I'll be forced to delete this thread.. please do not make me do that.
