These days we see that the city based people
(Chennai/Bangalore/Coimbatore..etc) are patronising
ARR/Haris Jayaraj (and Deva to some extent).... younger
generation is popularising these MDs' music among
elders also by repeat play at home and at TV,,
While IR's songs are typically played/requested in
AIR or some FM stations in Singapore/Malaysia etc.,
But I see that cities/towns like Trichy, Madurai,
Thanjavur dist are still playing IR songs in most
of the buses/tea shops/public programs/places
and even local tv channels like Vaigai etc are
playing IR's compositions regularly..
Even 5-10 years back it is the districts which
brought such a fame to IR songs.. even now they
are sticking to IR.. while City culture is changing
the prefs to ARRs and HJs..
these are all IMHO..
any views..

I am certain that Raaja's genius has only improved multi fold in the nineties. films like manam virumbudhe unnai and nilave mugam kaatu are examples. The problem now is that the films are not hits. That is why great numbers by raaja are going unnoticed.

Despite however IR's character is, you cannot dispute the great contribution he has made to TFM. Could there be any more of a genius around?

Srivatsan Sridhar,
though I don't doubt IR's genius, I don't think that u need the film to be hit for the songs to get noticed. A typical example is Taj Mahal which was a box office disaster, yet everyone noticed the songs.
As for the main topic, I think as far as many people are concerned, they don't have any particular MD cliches. If some music is nice to listen to they'll listen to it whether it is by ARR/IR/HJ etc. At least, I know that's true for Singapore Indians.

WhyNot,
I have a small observation:
I don't think that u need the film to be hit for the songs to get noticed. A typical example is Taj Mahal which was a box office disaster, yet everyone noticed the songs.
Nowadays you need to say the reverse:
i.e. something like so and so film has failed even though the songs are rack-centre(?!) hit. Its all because the audio sales is equally(even more in some cases) important to the film release and in such cases audio sales preceeds the film release. So citing Taj Mahal may not be a correct example because it falls under the category I said and not under what you said.
May be Kovil pura, Kaadhal oviyam, Vandicholai Chinnarasu(to some extent) can be cited as examples for the case you suggest.

Kupps,
Sometimes, music creates so much hype and sensation that it's difficult for the movie director to tell his story with music having the correct(resisting the temptation to underplay) effect on the movie.ManiRathnam said he had a difficult job in case of "Uyire/Dil Se" in trying to tone down the songs to tell his story.
In case of Taj Mahal,I think Bharathi Raaja banked on people raving about his son as soon as they see him and forgot about everything else.:)
Does anyone know if the audio cassette of Kaadhal Oviyam was released long before the release of the movie?

While on MR,I happened to catch the sneak preview of "Bandits" and was surprised to see Hollywood adaptation of "Thiruda Thiruda" without songs. The story and screenplay for the most part seems to same as "Thiruda Thiruda" and The director is Barry Levinson who made Rain Man,Avalon and Bugsy among other movies.Did anyone see the movie?

Bandits involve bruce willis and the other guy who constantly go on robbing banks and other stuff and they meet this girl along the way... well yes true to some extent that it falls in the same category as TT.
but only to an extent of similarity in some sequence of events here and there...the actual plot and story are quite different.
TT has many predesessors "butch cassidy and.." being the obvious one. Actually ram gopal varma, one of the story writers of TT had already taken a movie *ing sridevi (and nagarjuna i think...) which is the same as TT..but a subsequent dubbing of TT as donga doga ran like hell.. surprising...

Kupps,
nizhalgal wud also be a good example.. In the other category I wud certainly add "en swasa katre"..."kabhie na kabhie"
Trend,
Bad Boy Mac ,I agree is, consistenmcy wise, not a strong contender for the perenially vague term "genius". Since you know tennis much I guess u must also have read Nirmal sekhars vivid descriptions of players, psyche and events.
Boris becker Mac and goran are clubbed under the same category not because of their competency to outclass a pete sampras rod laver or a bjorn borg but because of their mercurial rise they bring to their game during championship moments..
lying on the dumps next to garbage.. some wimbledon these players can suddenly transform their game to match the best and beat them also... it is this unpredictability that is termed as "ridiculous" by the author.
sampras and borg one believes are enormously talented by sheer virtue of constant practise but it is a fact that they have been consistently dominating the scene which sort of makes them "used or practised to win" whether they wud be able to raise their standards from abysmal levels at infrequent intervals based on psyche rather than form.... is an open question but the other 3 have and hence are classified under this "genius" category....
for people who thrive on logic sampras is the card but for romantics , especially the brits its these vague superheros like becker and john mac who r the favorites...
I havent the slightest idea how IR is classified under this category... IMO IR is simply not used well enugh to reflect his talent acquisition come a MR production movie with IR I could see something special...

Bharath,
Digression:
I saw "Bandits" and enjoyed Billy Bob Thornton's and Kate Blanchett's performance. The movie seems very similar to me except the interesting idea while robbing banks.BTW,Ashok Amritraj is one of the producers of "Bandits".:)
On Tennis,
A Tennis critic sometime back quipped:"If you like tolerating a player perform below average for two sets and then raise his game to above average and win the match then you are better going to a mystery/drama movie or a roller-coaster ride.I truly enjoy the game, when I see good motivated tennis throughout and not a twist and turn of good and bad tennis."
I agree with this school of thought(though in minority:( ).But still,Sampras is the player who can step it up any time which is just based on the merit of the ball. The thing about Sampras is he doesn't the play one/two sets so badly as to perform extraordinarily the next few sets.:)
People calling him boring is sad to me.:(

IR is a genius. There can be no doubt about it.
He has experimented in all kinds of music and got an
overwhelming response for whatever he has done.
But today, the so-called big directors are not picking him
for their movies. This is because IR's style is
different from what the younger generation requires today.
He gives frontseat to melody and aesthetics rather
mere beat. The youth needs noise, hungama. No, IR
will never compromise on the quality of his music. He will
maintain his standards but will not stoop down
to make a noisy number just for the sake of making
it popular and attaractive. IR has crossed that
stage of an MD who wants to get popular somehow.
"Mounamelanoyi" from Sagarasangamam, "Nilaavevaa"
from MounaRaagam are one of the best examples that IR's ability
to make a marvelous song with least number of
instruments. Yet all the novel experiments done in fusion
prove IR's extra-ordinary creativity. It's not
difficult for IR to make heavily orchestrated music
like that of ARR if only he wishes. But, it's
not his style. If at all IR compromised he would
have been the standard MD for all Michael Jackson's
albums, forget about Mani Rathnam and Shankar.
We can't blame Mani or Shankar for not choosing IR.
They want noise and IR won't do that for anything.
And it all ends there.

Bandits is supposed to release on 12 th Oct(at least in US). However, there was a preview show(just one show) on Oct 06 th.I saw that preview show(I'm a fan of Cate Blanchett).
Warning:My feeling is the situations and characters are such that Billy Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchett steal most of the scenes.

I wish IR were more meticulous in making music. While there are enough songs to assert his genius, more than 50% of his work is trash.

can you list those trash songs? at least 50% of films in which all the songs are trash?
