I used the word serious music probably just once in all the above posts. It was a lousy word to choose for what I was trying to refer to, and you constantly misinterpret it as the compoer not being serious. It is the LISTENER I am talking about, not the composer!! Can you listen to a string quartet while jogging? no, because it requires much more attention on the part of a listener than say Brittany spears music. It is not that one is bad and the other is good (this is what you wrongly presume I am saying) but it all just depends on the listener's need and choice.
Any comments about anything else I said? What about the point I made about the difference in form between Stravinsky and Illayaraja? any opinions??? Are you willing to go over in detail the difference in orchestration between Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel and Illayaraja in an objective fashion? I am up for it. then we will not be talking words or browing websites but actually go over a history of evolution in musical ideas.
but maybe you dont want to do that but keep asking me what I meant by serious music. I cant answer unless we analyze together a whole range of musical forms and look at them objectively.
I am inclined to redefine what I meant by serious music and call it art music... then I realize that you will give me a hard time saying .. "isnt all of music supposed to be an art??"
cheers and keep making the music!!

Can you listen to a string quartet while jogging? no, how can you conclude this for all us..
what if I can jog or walk upside down but clearly break down the musical parts in my head and enjoy it well. :) You are concluding for others.
Stravinsky and Illayaraja difference,
really no comments, first of all to know that I should know about their work quite well. actually I do not know. so i cannot come to a clear conclusion, I cannot take this also from others because music taste is very subjective. :)
Until now by your posts I thought you were discussing this to be a composers issue. I must have missed it somewhere , but now I know it,
if it is the LISTENER problem you are talking about, I think this is not the proper thread for me to discuss this. Here I prefer to discuss about composing/music theory/recording tips etc/ rather than listners pleasure 95% of the other thread in newtfmpage just discuss nothing but listners pleasures, as far as I know this one does not. so i prefer not to discuss further on this subject that is very subjective and has different views among people. :) So thanks for reading :)

Srik
you didnt miss anything. I was only not clearly expressing what I had in mind.
also, I would think that listening to great works would also be a great way to discuss composing and music theory, which is relevant to this thread.
anyways, it was good to have this discussion.
best
Anand

oh I forgot to add,
I would prefer a more consistent rythm for jogging, certainly not a tani-avathanam or a string quartet where there is no percussion :-)
just kidding anyways, I never listen to music if and when I jog.
cheers

Hello there,
This is one of my own compositions, actually a joing composition. My friend came up with the opening phrase (S R M P S S S M G M R) and I developed it from there on. Please let me know ur comments. Tempo changes are not smooth at some places and u mite find differences in the recording at few places.

Anand, could u please explain me abt those differences in orchestration between those various composers? I am not at all knowledgeable abt those things.

Sam, quite a haunting piece and the way you have developed it kept the listener in me engaged throughout. I could hear just the opening few notes of the Titanic theme(played by the flute) in your piece at times although it changes quickly. What is exactly the pan flute-like instrument that you have used in the middle portions of the song? Your piece could easily be used in one of those sphagetti Eastwood westerns as the main theme piece, keep it up.

Very nice. Please compsoe more and share with us. Your sense of harmony is really nice. At 2:46, the drum beats gets introduced which was unexpected and really beautiful. Keep up the good work.

Sam, there's a full of life in your Music and Orchestration...In simple terms Excellent as a score...Execute the same in studio, you will be one of my favorite 'serious musician' as per these thead discussions:-))
The opening bit prepared my carnatic ears to listen a composition in NagaGandhari scale...I was really wishing it will be in that...But soon you change over to different kind of raga sancharam more to fulfill the minor scale and it's harmony...Hence to my evolving western ears it's a nice treat.
my composer intuition is claiming that "sticking within that scale and making harmony around will bring "Karuna" rasam ( merciful ). I haven't tried myself building harmony around that scale.
I will do it some day and also I am inspired to compose one myself after writing the following observations on your music.
I heard some western countries including USA celebrate something called "St Patrick Day" on march 17. I wondered the significance and enquired to find that he was a great saint who asked all snakes to leave from Ireland. When I listened to your music, i felt it's a tribute to St Patrick. Call it "Happy St Patrick Day". It matches from the world music and orchestration point of view
- Shades of Naga Gandhari
- Orchestration has Irish shades
- melodies on harp are played during St Patrick
Day
- mood of theme has request or appeal for
rattling poisonous snakes to go away.
Shall we call it "Happy St Patrick Day" composition by Sam:-))
I liked your opening bits and hence pass my appreciation for your friend.
Anyway these are just my opinions and may not reflect any others.
Regards,
Aditya

Sam..this is good..Looks like the approach to 'fusion' in this composition is through 'transitions'. Kind of moves from irish to indian to western classical like arrangements. Inspite of the transitions, it does hold my attention. Very interesting. Some how, I am reminded of Yanni by the orchestrations (in a good way though :))
(Easwar, the song as you mentioned is easy listening. If you can write lyrics in tamil, why is your pronounciation 'off' ?)

Kiru,
Thanks for downloading the file, I didn't get any reviews for that song yet. So, I am guessing it has not caught many people's attention. My pronounciation is off because I am not a Tamilian by "education", and my education in Sanskrit gives it a kind of "roughness" (?) and too much of stress on letters. Sorry, about that.
THanks,
Eswar

excellent work...it is refreshing to hear something like this. this, I call a creative piece.
At times you stretch a theme (maybe intentionally) for longer than I would... maybe you could make these more interesting by adding couterpoints. (you have some good ones already).
unfortunately I was able to listen only once or so, will try to listen more and give specific comments later.

Vijay, MS, Aditya, Kiru, Ram and Anand, thanks a lot for taking time to listen. Please tell me where else I need to improve. Vijay, all the sounds are from Yamaha PSR550, except for the guitar. That one particular sound is called by yamaha as 'Sweet Flute'.

Can you give me the linnk fo your song ? Seems like I missed yours. thanks.
Sam:
I am not good enough to give you tips on harmony. I think if you use a better KB your sounds will be a little smoother. that is all. you are good as you are.

Friends,
I have uploaded 'Pani Vizhum' instrumental. I find Raaja's prelude, interlude music composition more challenging to reproduce. Hence apologies if the main melody track sounds not perfect.
