Sorry cp,
When I first posted, I got an error message. And my browser did not display the query. So I assumed that it was not posted and I decided to post later. So later it is and here I am :
Almost all the songs in TFM fall into neat little categories :
- Agap paadalgal : This includes all kaadhal songs, duets, kaadhal tholvi paadalgal, aaN-peN kiNdal paadalgal, varNaNai paadalgal etc. The basic theme is aaN-peN uRavu.
- Philosophical songs : Vaazhve Maayam type songs. uRavugalai veRuthu paaduvathu - ex. vaazhve maayam, oorai therinjukitten, ponaal pogattum posa etc.
- Paasam songs : This includes all 'amma' songs, thaalattu songs, thanthai songs, brother-sister songs etc.
- IyaRkai Varnanai : Songs on beauty of nature like Senthaazham poovil etc.
- Uzhaikkum varkkam songs : This is specially reserved for MGR type songs : uzhaikkum karangale, etc and other communist type songs.
- Advice type songs : Thirudaathe paapa thirudaathe, Kudikkathe thambi kudikkathe etc.
- Devotional songs : Many songs. You know what I am talking about.
- Patriotic songs : From to truly patriotic songs like 'Viduthalai Viduthalai Viduthalai' to utterly commercial 'KappaleRi poyachu'.
There may other categories. But almost all songs fall into these categories.
There are very few songs which are so original in their idea (new to TFM) that they don't fall into any of these categories.
Let's list those original songs. Please explain why you think the songs are original.
Let me start :
- Nallathor veenai seithe adhai nalangkeda puzhudhiyil eRivadhundo ?.
vaRumaiyin niRam sigappu/MSV/SPB/Bharathi
This is a devotional song with a difference. The first stanza is introspective. In the first stanza Bhaarathi does not pray for himself, he prays that his talents be useful for others. In the second stanza he prays to Paraasakthi for gifts. And what gifts are they ? - nothing materialistic. asaivuRu madhi ketten, niththam navamena sudar tharum uyir ketten, visaiyuru panthinaip pol uLLam vendiyapadi sellum udal ketten. He asks these bcos he can benefit better to the society. Contrast this with Bhaarathi's more materialistic desires in kaaNi nilam vendum... angoru paththinip peN veNdum. (Has this song been used in a movie ? There was a movie called kaaNi nilam venDum which I believe was never released due to censor problems).
- Adho andha paRavai pola vazhaa veNdum. One of the great songs of KaNNadhaasan. In this song slaves are singing the song. These are slaves not like Indians were slaves of the British but like Hebrews were slaves to the Egyptians. And these slaves sing their desire for their freedom. K's lyrics are great in this song. There is no song in TFM in this type of situation I think.

What do you say about these songs? I feel that the following songs are unique and do not fall into any categories you had mentioned.
1)O oru thendral puyalAgi varumE - PudhumaipEn
2)thulli thulli nee paadamma seedhaimma - ChipikkuL muthu(I don't think this comes under love or Philosophy or Devotional)
3)kadha kElu kadha kElu nejamana kadha kElu - MMKR
4)mounathil vizhayadum manasatchiyE - nool vEli
5)katrukkEnna vEli kadalukkenna moodi - Avargal(this does not come under the category love or Philosophy)
6)neelakuyiLE unnodu naan paNpaaduvEn - Magudi
7)naanoru sindhu kavadi sindhu raagam puriyavillE - Sindhu Bhairavi

kAtrukenna vEli kadalukkenna moodi is a love-song - song of euphoria following love. Another song I can think of in this category is Kaadhalin deepam ondru EtRinALE en nenjil
nAnoru sindhu kAvadi sindhu falls under the category of kazhivirakkam. Another song I can think of is
mayakkam enadhu thaayagam
mounam enadhu thAimozhi
kalakkam enadhu kAviyam
nAn kaNNeer varaindha oviyam .
About other songs I have to listen to them again or see the songs in their context in the movie to classify them as a thanippaadal.

naan sonna pattakulaiyellam pudhu pudhusa category Arimbuthu adhil thaLLitteengaLey :-(
Here are the picturisation of the songs I mentioned:
thulli thulli nee paadamma - Kamal gets acquainted with Radhika. Radhika is a widow and Kamal sympathises with her for her state and sings this song comparing Sita & Rama with Radhika & her late husband.
kadha kElu kadha kElu nejamana kadha kElu - This is the title song in MMKR. The story of the four brothers about their birth and separation is narrated.
neelakuyiLE unnodu naan paNpaaduvEn - Magudi - this is just a duet but the heroine is a teacher and the hero is the student who learns music.
mounathil vilayadum manasatchiyE - nool veli - I have not seen the picturisation, but from the lyrics I could understand that the scene depicts the emotional turbulence in a person's mind.
Here are the words:
mounaththil vilaiyaadum manasaatchiyae
aayiram ninaivaagi aanandhak kanavaagi
kaariyam thavaraanaal kangalil neeraagi
(mounaththil)
ragasiyach churangam nee naadaga arangam nee
soadhanaik kaalamallavaa nenjae kuzhappaththin thaayallavaa
oru ganam thavaraagi pala yugam thavippaay nee
oomaiyin paribaashai kangalil vadippaay nee
(mounaththil)
unmaikku oru saatchi poy solla pala saatchi
yaarukkum neeyallavaa nenjae manidhanin nizhalallavaa
aasaiyil kallaagi achchaththil mezhugaagi
yaar mugam paarththaallum aiyaththil thavippaai nee
(mounaththil)

what do you exactly mean by a thanippaadal? Any song can be categorized under some topic. The song NalladhOr veenai seidhEn adhai nalam keda puzhudhiyil erivadhundO can also be categorized under kazhivirakkam.

To cp :
Sorry if I gave you that impression that I want to classify all your songs under some category. That is not my aim.
By a thanippaadal I mean the song is unique and has a noteworthy theme. If Koundamani and Senthil sing a duet, it will not become a thanippaadal.
ThuLLi ThuLLi is a Thanippaadal, I think.
But Mounathil viLaiyadum manasaatchiye is a good song but is it a unique song. There have been many songs in which the theme is that the character tries to come to terms with his conscience. (Many Sivaji movies have this type of songs).
kazhivirakkam means self-pity. And Nallathor veenai seithe is far from kazhivirakkam.

This list is going to be very short and this speaks for the variety in TFM or rather in all of FM. Ellam araicha maavaiye thiruppi thiruppi araichukkitu irukkanga.
