Very true. Its so unfortunate that its become a 'fashion' to pronounce Tamizh badly!!
I am reminded of the Ceylon Radio anchor - Hameed's comment - "Though there were many singers in the past dominated from other states, each inidividual made an attempt to pronounce Tamizh as Tamizh but today its unfortunate to see the North Indian singers pronounce Tamizh so badly".
PSusheela, even today, has a strong Telugu accent but her Tamizh diction is flawless. Vairamuthu has commented many times that "Her pronunciation of Tamizh poses a challenge to even a Tamizh peraasiriyar". Very true.
Other singers like Chithra, SPB, Sujatha too made sure the diction was right though they werent fluent in Tamizh.
I think more than the singer, the MD and the lyriscist should ensure that the words are pronounced correctly.

Raju ,
To add more ,P Susheela learnt tamil thru a teacher !!!!!
I feel Sadhana Sargam has improved a bit ,UDit Narayanan has not improved his tamil ...
But i should admit that there are some songs that nobody else other than sadhana would have sung so beautifully ...the best example would be snehithanae ....
I think SHreya Ghoshal was good in Chellami CHellam ,but in Julie ganapathy ,pronounciation was bit bad

"mudhal mudhalai" from laysa laysa
"Madhumitha" was singing
"Mazhayai OOoley" rather than "mazhayai pooley" in between the song :)

For heaven sake, don't critise these singers, we can also open a new thread for "Association for Murder of Hindi language" and add SPB, Jesudas, Janaki, Chitra, M G Sreekumar and an ENDLESS List. Whatever songs are sung by; Udit Narayan, Sadhana Sargam, Sukhwinder Singh, Vasundara Das-All have been stupendous HITS. Vasundara is a Tamizhian only. Ok ..Since she was in Bangalore, there is a small change of her Tamizh accent. Thats all. Even out Tamil singers have murdered other languages. If you don't like these singers, stop listening to their songs. But they are all BIG HITS. I agree that Udit is bad in Tamil, but the music directors should correct them. You people like or no, they will continue to sing for ever and their songs will be hits only. SO, dont blame them.

It is impossible for music director to correct all the mistakes ..Is he a tamil teacher ??But at the same time ,i do not understand why they use them ????
SPB,KJY ,Chitra's HINDI songs have good pronounciation when u compare UDIT ,Sadhana's TAMIL pronounciation ..
Remember SPB sang 5 songs in Hum aapke hain Koun ....

"murder thamizh" is done mostly from HFM singers. The reasons might be many but ultimately the result is same. at the same time not ONLY HFM singers murder thamizh (eg. YSR, Vasundara, ARR et al being thamizhians in one way or other, butcher the language). Hence its not something anti-hindhi agitation.

hi kk,
we think the pronounciations are bad and we want to change it.so we are raiseing our voice. we are not saying that these singers should not sing.I agree that sadhana sargam has a beautiful voice, but what is the point when the meaning of the song is not properly conveyed to the listener. The intention is that, you point out the mistakes and let them know that they should sing better.....
"dont have the indian mentality that your voice does not count and nothing is gonna change"...

Well, many tamilians themselves have problems with la, La and zha. In the song "kalyanamdhaan kattikittu oadi polaama", SriLekha Parthasarathy seems to have this problem. Shaam in his conversation with Sun TV people said he acted
in "nee romba alaga irukkE". I thought he was very artificial. Another problem with (modern) tamilians is between na and Na. Simbu says "nee venum" instead of "nee veNum" and when I last heard he is TR's son (a tamil).
Udit sings "aynavadam myna vadaada" instead of "aynavaram myna varaada". I believe in Hindi they write "Chopra" but say "Chopda". At least to my ears it sounds that way.
Sadhana sings "Nile nadhiyaga enakullE vandhAi" but it feels she said "Naaaile nadhiyaga enakullE vandhAi", bringing to our minds the familiar Madras street dog!
And who can forget the all-time famous KJY song
"pilai thamil paadugirEn, oru pilaikkaaga ..."

If they are bad singers, you and me know that, then why do music directors and producers call them from Mumbai? Because they have a good voice. Their songs become hits. How many of us Tamizhians call bannana as, "Palam", when it is supposed to be "Pazham". There are lot of city bred guys and gals, who cannot speak good Tamil being Tamilians. See Vaidvelu (comedian), how he pronounces "Palam" or "Vaalka" (Vaazhka ie. Life). I agree that Hindi singers kill Tamil than kissing it, but their songs are hits yaar.
In "Snehidane" Sadhana says, "aiviril idukkil...", when it is supposed to be "aiVIRAL". (5 fingers).
Udit Narayan, allu for aLLu. Many more too, I agree, you cannot help it friends, only laugh and critise. But do you know Udit's reputation in Bollywood? He is THE BEST there. So, it doesn't matter how they sing? As long as the song hits the market. Your saying will not stop Udit or Sadhana to stop singing in TFM. They will continue to sing in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada too. Mani Sharma, layaraja, ARR all use them more and more. Sadhana is used by IR in all his latest albums. What was IR doing (scraching his short hair) when Sadhana sang in Manasellam as "ilaya nadhi she says elutha vendum puthiya vithi", IR is supposed to be a perfectionist, Hahah. This system will continue, so don't worry about all this, enjoy the song if u can, else don't listen to them OK. Go and listen to "Thyagaraaja Bhagavadhar" uahahahahahhhhhhhhhhhhha.
I don't care for the remarks that follow my post.

I think one can blame the people first for making the songs hit sung by "Association for Murder of Tamil language". Next the directors and Music companies who play culprits for allowing Tamil killing singers to sing.
SO JUST AVOID THE TAMIL KILLING SONGS AND ENCOURAGE GOOD TAMIL SONGS, THEN THINKS WILL CHANGE.

In good old days, playback singers voice and music were recorded at the same time. MDs were around and thet took care to ensure proper pronunciation by the singers.
However, nowadays, MDs let track singers record the voice when they record music. Once the music is recorded, I think they left it to their assistants to record the lead singers in the track. These people, either out of respect or carelessness, never bother to correct the mistakes comitted by imported and local singers.
I strongly beleive, it is the duty of the MDs and lyricists to ensure, the singers pronounce the words properly. Well, for that, these MDs should know/mastered Thamizh in the first place. Can you expect that from the new crop of MDs ?
I once watched, singer TL Maharajan complaining in Nyandi Durbar on how he was forced to sing like a north indian singer and that he refused to budge.
As usual, the filmi tribe place the blame on public (they mean the youth) for this sorry state.
As a public, what can you do ?
Raise your voice in public forums in the belief that it will one day reach the deaf ears of MDs.
Language is like a soul of a body. Without a soul, even if you are alive, you are/should be treated as dead.
For those with defeatist attitude, don't forget the saying, "adi mel adi vaithal ammiyum nagarum".
Regardz,
Vetri

Only tamils like us are so shameless and keep our fingers crosed and wait for the northi singers to improve their accent. Why is this thalai ezhuthu for us.We become happy when udit naryan or sukhwindre prounouces some words with clarity. Are we such shameless maanam ketta jaadhigal.
Music directors like ARR and Vidhyasagar who are mainly responsible for this sorry state of tamil should be made to realise this

True indian,
why write a song when no one cares about the way the words are put out? why do we need to hail the likes Vairamuthus, etc.? would you rather be happy with instrumental music?
A song is an art form; by not properly producing a song, you not only kill the language, but also the very art itself. If it's not saved now, what we leave behind for the generations to come will not be Thamizh.
