Everyone is pretty bored and fed up with arguing on differences of opinions regarding MDs right ? After all typically, what would we TFMers discuss suppose we meet in person ?. Song discussions right ? So here is the thread.
Idea is someone will introduce a song and we all will discuss about the song, period. Limitation is we will automatically move to another song after 5 days of discussion. ie. anyone contributing to the thread after the first set of 5 days will have to come up with a new song!. Also whoever is starting first can state the ending date of five day period.
Some help from Ravi is required for this until some time for people to really start adhering to this.
BTW why 5 days ?? Obviously to keep the thread fresh and alive !!

I missed out a few things. If there is no posting for say 2 days the thread should move to another song. Ravi if possible add it in the original description of the thread.
So here is my first song
"Uravenum pudhiya vaanil" from Nenjathai Killadhe.
A great song from IR right. Good lyrics too. Who is written the lyrics ? VM ?
This song creates such a feeling and emotion that is hard to describe. SPB has really performed really great. Somehow it stands apart from a lot of songs. What do you think guys ?
BTW, due date for the song - 8th. 9th needs a new song.

Good Start! A great song !
I checked my CD (by Pyramid, IP-5014)..The Lyrics of this song were written by Gangai Amaran.
I was very facinated by this song especially because of the two amazing interludes, particularly the second one where just after the whistle, a solo violing takes into a battery of violas and cellos.
The first interlude sounded like guitar connected through a Wha-Wha unit (or it may be a synthesizer) followed by a short piece in piano. Fabulous!
In the movie, Director Mahendran had excellently portrayed the ambience in some rarely seen and secluded parts of Ooty where the movie was filmed. Ashok kumar had done excellent cinematogprahy for this song, especially those misty mountains up there!

IMO, I rank this song as the top IR song in
terms of melody & orchestration. Great singing too (who else spb, sj). First interlude is my fav part, especially, where it starts with a guitar piece, which slowly grows and mix with violin piece. It is a classic song.

Hi Ravi,
Amazing interludes maan !
Everyone,
This song seemed to have more of intuition and spontaneity probably !. . The word "uravenum" though it encompasses only few swarams the transition and glide in that one word is amazing.
The singers will love songs like these I guess. SPB and SJ have performed excellently in this song. Do you remember theflow during the lines
"maalai varum pothile
Naalum unthan tholile
Kanaviladum ninaivu yavum
Pudhiya Kolam"
Especially remember SPB during "Kanaviladum"
Similarly for the stanza
PAavai engindra Kolam
Pon Kaviyam etc.
Does not the flow of violin in the background immediately come to your mind ??

anoter interesting point to note that for songs like these SJ and SPB make their voices sound husky. i have experienced this in ilamayenum poongaatru which we can perhaps take up for the next discussion.
the whistle in the second interlude exactly fits the song.

HI Ravi and others,
Yes the Interludes are amazing !! I feel this song would have been more spontaneous and intuitive than a lot of songs we all know. In the first word "Uravenum" itself, though there are only a few notes look at the glide and flow. It seems to indicate what the rest of the song is. This flowing feeling is what dominates my mind
everytime I listen to it.
In fact I have an interesting experience with this song. I was playing it on my deck and trying to memorize the lines in order to sing them. Every time the song had started my mind would be forced by this flow to wander off and after a while, (especially getting caught in this swirl during interludes), will not concentrate on the
lyrics following at all and will immerse myself into the music involuntarily. And it happened for 4 consecutive times like this at which point I said "Forget it I am not going to concentrate on lyrics . I am just going to listen"
In fact as I am trying to remember the song in order to describe it to you guys, I get the violin flow immediately.
Thinking of the lines
Paarvai ovvondrum koorum
Pon Kaviyam
Paavai engindra kolam
Pon oviyam
Maalai varum pothile
Naalum unthan tholile
Kanaviladum
ninaivu yaavum
Pudhiya baavam"
Hats off to GA FOR THE LYRICS !
Can you guys hear the background violin flow now ? The flow is well accentuated in Maalai varum pothile part !
SPB is amazing in "KAnavilaadum", right ??
Expecting responses eagerly

Dear Ravi and Mukund,
thanks for starting a new thread altogether. As you know i had been in search of such a thread. You know I had been writing at length about some particular songs (Ennai thalaata, Mandram vandha, nalam vaazha etc..) and had been constantly reminded (by Ravi)that they did not fit the threads I had put them on. Please let me know if I can continue in this thread my own way of approaching the IR's songs. Hope this is the one that best fits my taste.
Regards

Hi guys,
Nice to see these postings !. In fact I was busy last 2 days to do anything. Tell me if the timeout days I have specified are OK.
BTW vijay,
Murali Sankar wanted to start a song discussion before you. So it would be correct if he started it. You can follow it up. I think this sorting should be carried out by the person whos is posting.
Shankar,
Yes I seem to be carried away there. I checked it the next day. I just weanted to state the progression from one instrument to next in this song and by tomorrow Murali can come up with his song.
Initially, song starts with the synth sound
Paam Paam Pa ba pa Paam
Paam Paam PA ba PAam
The same sequence is repeated with guitar in BG.
After this wail by flute - amazing
Same sequence as written above follows.
Then violin joins the fray.
Great piece.
There is wholeness typically found in IR's songs as it will not look like pieces bonded together but like one spontaneous flow. This is very evident in this song.

Thank you Mukund. I do not know if you had seen my earlier postings in the tfm. I am putting one of them here. This is regarding Mandram vandha thendralukku. It was posted in the profound lyrics thread which is now archived. Let us discuss this.
One beautiful song with admirable lyrics is "Mandram Vandha Thendralukku".
The song in the very first line indicates that there is a misunderstanding between the husband and wife. The second line
"Bhoopalamae Koodaathennum Vaanam Undoe soll"
It is one of the lines with a deep inner meaning.
Without Bhoopalam the sky can survive and so is the case of the raga. It can exist without the sky. But the very meaning of their existence is lost. They must pair up to add meaing to their existence.
"Thaamarai Melae Neerthuli Pole Thalivanum Thalaiviyum Vazhvadhenna"
Everybody understands that the glossy coat on the leaf of the the lotus is hydrophobic. Inspite of the two being associated for the very purpose of survival they are unattached. This tells us the story of the film in just one line.
"Nanbargal Polae vazhvadharkku maalaiyum melamum thevai alla"
This clearly demarcates the regimes of friendship and love. The couple need to have something above the normal plane of friendship. It is for that purpose that they have been united by the wedlock. This line indicates that there is no physical relation between them which is absolutely essential.
Other lines are:
"Medaiyaip polae vazhkai alla"
This reflects the traditional Indian philosophy. It contradicts the very much western "All the world is a stage" by shakesphere. It says the life is no play and implies that the wedlock is precious and has divinity. The line opposes the "Take it easy way" of the Western world when it comes to human relations and values.
The next line:
"Oadaiyaippolae Uravum alla Paadhaigal Maariyae payanam sella"
This line stresses much more the interpretations of the previous line. The traditional Indian view of the marriage being an one - to - one function is highlighted here. It say that a river if courses through many paths at the same time shall lose its might and content and this highlights the ill effects of Polyandry and polygamy. In the film this line indicates that neither Mohan nor Revathi can get over the relation that they had established. She cannot forget her past and he does not want to lose his present. This line emphasizes that the two be in good relation with each other to ease the way of living in the future.
I beg your paron for taking a long time. All these are my personal interpretations and I welcome critical remarks. I shall also be happy to see any one exploring further into the song and letting me know the finer details. It is musically rich too
