I just heard the soundtrack of the new Hindi film DevDas. Ismayeel Darbar (who debuted with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) is the only quality composer out there, no doubt. The attention he gives to melody and orchestration, choice of singers is commendable and makes him stand out from the so-called successful MDs like Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan and Jatin-Lalit. Wish he comes to TFM as well to pose some healthy competition to the new gen. MDs. What do you think?

What about Vishaal (Maachis, God Mother, Hu Tu Tu)?

I agree, Vishal Bharadwaj is one of the rarest species in HFM, who doesn't seem to make compromises. He is one original MD (with some RDB hang-over). His score in Maachis was great. The same however can't be said of his successive films like the ones you mentioned, Satya, kamal's Chachi 420 and his album for Gulzaar, featuring our 'chinnakuyil' Chitra & Bhupinder Singh. Though original and miles ahead of regular HFM fare, they were not great scores IMO. And as usual, mainstream HFM just ignored this guy.
BTW, did you listen to Vishal's Tamil debut? You won't believe it's him! Looks like he has given up and started making compromises, interestingly with Tamil films! As if to tell the audience, "You want mediocre stuff? Take it!"
Ismayil Darbar seems to have a good ear for music, (especially the light, semi-classical variety) and a lot of aesthetic sense. And hope he keeps going this way. And I'm hoping that TFM would import him sometime (hopefully with no pre-conditions like the use of TamizhKolai singers and Tanglish lyrics)

Even in the Abishek "Dumb" Bachan s "Tera Jadu" ID has done a reasonable job.Sounded like LP in "Quayamat ho"song.
BUT he gives you the same feel like Maragathamani.A great start..but..somewhere makes ou feel that he does not belong to the top class.
Vishal Baradwaj - MAchis was ok but some other chandrachur movie the songs were ARR like.He lacks the classical depth of ID.But from Doordarshan days s travelled a long way.
Above all this you need "Suzhi" which Anu,NS have got in plenty.
I really doubt Vishal Baradwaj has done "Gemini" .It must be "Ramani Baradwaj" who did "Parthen Rasithen " and "Pandavar Bhumi".

>>Sounded like LP in "Quayamat ho"song<<
OISG:
is this a +ve or a -ve point for ID? :-)
IMO Ismail Darbar's score in tera jaadu chal gaya was a disappointment considering that he had raised high hopes in hum dil de chuke sanam.
But TFM has composers like IR,ARR...and until recently vijaybhaskar, KVM. And Ravindran is still there. Why should people want Ismail Darbar here?

OISG,
Are you talking about the 'Charan' composer Bharadwaj ? He is Ramani Bharadwaj and IS different from Vishal,

I guess I'll have to blame Raaga.com for this confusion.
It credits Vishaal Bharadwaj as the MD for Gemini.
I couldn't believe it, it was so.... un-Vishaalish! Then I thought perhaps he too, has stooped down to this level, under pressure.
Well, AVR, I agree TFM has the best composers in India today. My point was Ismail and now, (since the Gemini clarification) Vishaal are perhaps the only quality HFM guys who are welcome here.
While we have such quality in our TFM MDs, why do we encourage such mediocre MDs like Sirpi and SAR? And these days, every new entrant like Harris J, Imaan, Muralidharan sounds like an ARR clone, with no original flavor whatsoever.
If a guy has played the keyboard ('Dubai uncle's gift') in college-day functions and has a large collection of CDs at home, and wants to become a music director, all he needs to do is a Tilting Wet grinder or a nizaam paakku jingle and rope in a Nityashree to sing a high-pitch title song for some 'sob'opera on Sun TV, and attend film parties, you will soon become an MD! It helps if you sport long hair and ear-studs and speak nothing but Tanglish! You have arrived! And sell millions of copies of your debut album for a young debutant director's yet another 'kaadhal' film, with 'imported' heros and heroines like Abbas and MOnal (whose only qualification is not knowing Tamil) where in the climax, the hero cuts off his ____ to 'Show' his love to the heroine!
The movie is a success and you are now a force to reckon with!
Sorry, romba digress paNNitten :)
You mentioned Raveendran. This gifted composer if I remember correctly, hasn't composed in Tamil since 'Rasikan Oru Rasikai' and 'KaNmaNiyE PEsu'. Why have producers ignored him for so long? Even when some of the Mal hits like His Highness Abdullah and Bharatam were re-made in Tamil, his original, classic score was ignored and Deva gave us some real trash!
Telugu cinema now has Praveen MaNi and some new guys like Patnaik, who are still on the ranks of the jingle-composer brigade mentioned above.
Karthik Raja, a talented guy with some successful (and quality) scores, for reasons known only to him, is keeping a low-profile, and contributing to a couple of low-budget Hindi films that never promote his music, while his brother seems to be more market-savvy (though not a match to KR's talent IMO) and seems to be popular.
So, we should only be happy if someone like Ismail or Vishal step in.

Resembling LP was a change.Today Pancham Da is the Cash word in HFM.I meant +ve .You have so many RDB clones,ARR clones atleast for a change lets have a LP Clone!
Nags
I follow Ramani Baradwaj s career for the simple reasons
1.I have some music related aspirations.A sort of ..role model...Anaivarum mannikka!
2.We have the same professional background.(I understand that he too had his practice for sometime)
3.He was not young when he got the break.I have also crossed "Whizkid" age.His success gives a hope.(I am younger to ARR, but YSR and Iman names make me feel a Kizha Bolt)

Ganesh ,
Was "His highness abdullah" remade in tamil ? Can you give the details of the movie- name.cast etc ? [The score by Ravindran for HHA is one of my all time favourites and always brings tears to my eyes. Such beauty and simplicity are not heard very often.]
Is this Pravin mani the same guy as mani sharma ? If not, the list of mediocre guys is longer :( and whatever happened to Hamsalekha ? Did he score for any tamil movie after Vedham pudidhu and Kodi parakkadhu ?

Hamsalekha did the score for Paruva Raagam (I think, that was the title of the movie) Original Kannada dubbed into tamizh -*ing Juhi Chawla!

Naaz..Paruvaraagam came much before Kodi parakkudhu ..Are there any Hamsalekha creations in tamil after "Kodi.."? however , sorry for the digression and all the talk about Hamsalekha
Devdas is refreshing ...truly better than the compositions of the Nadeem shravans and the Annumaliks of this world. Has some good vocals by Kavita and a new singer and the lyrics try to steer clear of the trite "dil, deewana mastana ..." etc despite the ample scope available for them ..after all it is a story of a deewana :)!!! But raaga.com doesnt mention the lyricist(s)..any idea on who it is..?

@$$,
'Cheenu' was a bad, masala remake of the classic 'Bharatam'.
RS,
HHA I think was remade as a Satyaraj movie: 'EngirundO vandAn'. Or was it a remake of the Mohanlal-Ranjani hit 'Chitram'? I haven't seen the Tamil version.

RS,
you can check out on indiafm.com for the songs of devdas. They give the singers' names there.
as regards telugu FM MDs, patnaik seems to be a hope since his songs are mostly rooted in melody and I seriously don't think he is an ad-jingle composer as mentioned by someone. there are many one film wonders in TeFM too but patnaik holds some promise and Mani Sharma has any way proven his stuff already .. but after IR, there has not been a single MD who held sway there. keeravani was good for some time and then mysteriously disappeared for a long time - he is trying for a second innings and we just have to wait and see whats going to happen ...
