Friends, I am just being swept away once again after a long gap of 6 years by the consummate and enhanting musical compositions of Ilaiyaraja. Here, I want to list 10 of the best instrumental pieces I have heard from across most genres of music. This way, I am sure many more new listeners can appreciate the absolute greatness of IR's compositions. I always felt that IR, who is perhaps the rarest of the rare and the most perfect creative artiste of all, needs some more spreading the gospel by people like me to enable many more people to be aware of, and enjoy this great man's creations. Hope this thread gets some input of any nature, but please focus only on interludes of IR and others as well.

Well, Friends, this is one place where some ultra modern Indian film composers cannot simply find a place, techno or otherwise!!! A few may disagree, but then can we help it?!
To my mind and heart, ten of my most favorite instrumental pieces in the order of creative brilliance: Actually, my favorite instrumental pieces range from 1,000 to 2,000! However, this discussion will, we hope, bring to the fore the most poweful and catchy instumental pieces liked by most of us.

4. Interludes in the song 'Ninaivo Oru Paravai' (Sigappu Rojakkal)
4. Interludes in the song 'Sandan Kattre' (Thanikkattu Raja')
5. Interludes in the song 'Unakkena Thaane Inneramam' (Sakkalathi)
6. Interludes in the song 'Mada Prave Vaa' (Madanotsavam, Malayalam by Salil Chowdhury)
7. Interludes in the song 'Nee Iladha Podhu Yengum Ennam' (Ilamai Kkolam)
8. Interludes in the song ' Ahaya Pandalile Ponunjal Aaduthama' (MSV)
9. Interludes in the song 'Appane, Appane, Pillayar Appane' (Annai Oru Aalayam) This interludes can compete note for note with the exciting William Tell overture by Rossini.
10. Come September, the famous theme song played by the Shadows. However, there are some really western guitar works of the 70's that are mind blowing.

I was listening to 'prEma rAga hAdu geLathi' by Raaja. There is a real jazz piece that runs for three minutes and omigod, its great.

Hi,
I think one of the best interlude music comes in the Nizhalgal song, "Poonkathave Thazh tiravai" Excellent use of nadaswaram and violins. I remember that when the film was released, the famous tamil author "Sujatha" had said in some magazine (Vikatan or Kumudam) that he was stunned by the way IR mixed the symphony of Bach with our own Mayamalagowla. I still rate it as one of the best interludes. The picturisation of the song was horrible though.
A similar piece which was praised was the piece in Raja Parvai where Kamal plays the violin. He starts playing Pathuvarali ragam. Then he is slowly joined by drums etc. A good try at fusion.

Infact some many songs of IR have top quality interludes that it is difficult to list all of them.
