What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed?

What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?

  I can recollect 3 great songs from Nilavu suduvathillai.
  1. Naalum en manam sung by SJ/KJY. Read what guitar prassanna says about this song.
  "Guitar/ voice counterpoint. Great song."
  2. poove pani poove -sung by SJ. This song is an aural treat in GowriManohari raaga.
  3. Paarijaatham is another peppy number by SJ/KJY.

  yes, It was time when TFM experienced some real blend of Western classical with indian classical(particulalry carnatic). to me he is a all time master to exhibit counterpoints in songs which is a tough skill in western classical!!!!

  I cant pick the best of IR (he has alot of top class songs), So, I have picked some of the songs which I liked and which are different.
  
  Evergreen songs (I listen to these often, songs of true class):
  
  Kaathal Kavithaigal Padithidum neram - Gopura Vasalile (for sheer beauty and simplicity, great song)
  Valayosai kala kala - Sathya (of course.)
  Oh Butterfly -- of course
  Ninnakori Varanam - Agni Natchathiram (truly great)
  Poonthalir aada ( you cant stop listening to this if u hear it twice .... charanam is the best in this songs and the interludes of course).
  Nee oru kaathal - Nayagan --- especially the interlude violin piece and the blend of different sounds, importantly its smooth all the way (u dont find many IR songs remotely out of flow).
  Mandram Vantha - (to me its one of the best songs of all time).
  Mounamana neram - Salangai Oli (total classic)
  Kalyana Ther nila - Mounam Sammadham (KJY and IR ... what else u need)
  Ithazil Kathai Ezhuthum - Unnal Mudiyum Thambi - top class
  Poomalai vangi vanthan - Sindhu Bhairavi - great song
  Thom Thom - Sindhu Bharaivi - A different song altogether
  Vaanam Keezhe Vanthal enne - I havent realised how good it is, until I heard it recently
  Kanne Kalai mane (of course)
  Vaan engum thanga ven meengal - you can easily get hooked to this song
  Ennule Ennule - Valli (This is a great song that went by without great notice, the charanam is absolute classic)
  Enna Sattham Intha neram - Punnagai mannan - nice melody with simple but great interludes
  Ithu oru pon malai pozhuthu - of course
  Ilaya nila - of course
  Pani Vizhum Malarvanam - great song
  Maalayil Yaaro manathodu pesa (Chatriyan) - nice song
  Thendral Vanthu ennai thodum - (IR and KJY --- wow)
  Enthan Nenjil neengatha - Kalaignan - (IR and KJY --- wow)
  Kamalam Paatha kamalam - movie?? - (IR-KJY-classical - hmm what to say).
  Naadham Ezhunthathadi - Gopura Vasalilile
  Senthoora Poove - 16 vayathinile - great song (the flow of the song is amazing even though you hear alot of different kind of music in this song).
  Poove Sempoove - good one
  Sempoove Poove - good one
  Keladi Kanmani paadagan sangathi (one of my favorites, SPB's too, its one of the songs where u get totally involved)
  Nee Paathi Naan Paathi Kanne (keladi kanmani) - (IR-KJY classic).

  Poo Malarnthida - Tik Tik Tik (total different song --- song of class)
  Manitha Manitha Ini un vizhigal sivanthal --- (movie??) -- proves IR's class ... anyone has this song or have a link, pls respond.
  Madai thiranthu - Nizhalgal - good one
  Ananda Raagam - Panneer Pushpangal - havent heard a song like this from any other tamil composer
  Inji Idupazhaga - Thevar Magan - good one
  Vedham anuvinil oru naadham - good one

  I wonder how I missed those (I was kid when IR was at peak, maybe cuz of that).

  I am seeing ARR getting in this forum for no reason. He is a good composer too. You cannot compare two good composers of different generations. Thankfully for us, both
  come from our region. I think its time to appreciate good music regardless of musician (cuz not everyone can produce same quality music that they produce and ... both cannot produce great music always .. they are human too).
