ARR Fans have been accused of being less than 20 years of age and not having the maturity to appreciate IR's works. While this is not completely true, the fact is that many of the new generation TFM listeners haven't had the opportunity to earlier IR works. Maybe we can blame time !
I have compiled a list of IR's 'rockish' and contemporary numbers, which according to me would appeal to any younger generation TFM listener.
IR fans can add to the list with their takes on what makes the song special. If possible with links where the songs can be listened to.
Let a healthy discussion prevail !

The 'Kalaignan" songs listed above though they have horrible lyrics, have really good music.
"Idhu oru Nila kaalam" is an amazing tune with fantastic hindustani alaps.

Venkatesh...I was concentrating more on pre-1985 music....of course I have included some after that also.
Vj...
Speaking of 'Hey..unnaithanaey'...there was a song that goes "Hey...I love you" featuring Revathi and Suresh. Which film was that.
The 'Hey I Love You' tune is very contemporary and will appeal to the younger folk even today.
I am trying to download these songs from Tamil Hub.
Vj...I don't remember much of the last 3 songs that you have mentioned...anyway will try to download them.
Aasai nooru Vagai is a very good song...but I am not sure if it is 'rockish'...I feel that there is a lot of folk in it.

Venkatesh....
Though I loved Anjali songs, my feeling was they lacked the kind of sophisticated choruses and brilliance which IR had displayed in the songs in Tik Tik Tik or Vikram.

I think we should add "still fresh" songs like
1) Azagu Ayiram - Ullasa Paravaigal
2) Kadhal Ennum Kovil - Kazugu
3) Ponnoviyam - Kazugu
4) Varuvai Anbe - Karjanai
5) Oru Kunguma Chengamalam
6) Poo Vaadai Katru -
7) Naan Un Thayaga Vendum
...... so many such songs..
If they are remastered with latest digital techniques... They will blow away all the craps that are churned out.

I think Anjali is one of the Albums inwhich Raja was at his best. I keep listening to these songs from Anjali and Agni Natchatram in the bus on my way to office in london. It just mesimirises U. Especially Vaanam Namaku, Anjali, anjali. They deserve ***** ranking.
This reminds me of one more number by Raja but dunno the film name. The song goes like this " Megam Kottatum Atam undu...". Kamal Starrer. The ending of the song is took good. They way raja mixes Drums and Mridangam and moves the beats from drums gradually to Mridangam.. This is what agmark IR style is all about. It is not fusion. He doesn't consider the western and indian form of music to mean 2 different things. For him it all speaks the same language. In fusion, i think we can identify the way things happen explicitly, but not in IRs music composition. He uses acoustic drums effective in "Nanaga nanilai thaye.." song.
"Pani vizhum Iravu" from Mouna ragam could be added to this list U are trying to compile

Thanks Sabesan :)
btw Which film is the "Shock...." song from ?
Awe...I wanted to list IR songs which are structured completely to a Western Pop/Rock rhythm with western chorus and basslines.
This will be the initial hook for the younger generation. Once they grow older, they will automatically explore the other genres of IR.
Vayathu pozhapu (aka) career :
It's been a long time since I listened to "Madai Thiranthu"...anywhere on the net where I can listen to it ?
Sathish...I've already included the songs you have mentioned in the list above.

1) Oh Butterfly - Meera
2) Potu vaitha Kadhal thittam - Singara Velan...very cool fusion of synth-pop-metal sounds.

//They way raja mixes Drums and Mridangam and moves the beats from drums gradually to Mridangam//-kamal gets the ''pazhaiya jenma nyabagam''-brisk editing showing alternate shots of martial arts sequences with classical dancing(by sripriya) and 'present'tense kamal dancing till he faints...amzing how IR was able to precisely deliver what the director wanted.I never understood why IR had done that last bit-till I saw the film.

Illayaraja completely grasps the situation of the song and then he composes and makes sure it perfectly fits the occasion.

It is hard to resist recommending, Asaiya Katthula thoodhuvittu..." in Johnny. This is probably one of the best IR-style rock songs, with the hard beats done with two Thavils..with the occasional nathaswaram fills. Yet, they almost don't sound like those instruments in this song unless you carefully notice it...May be some sort of "Gatam" was also used..The beat timings are almost perfect...I think the guys playing it during the recording probably had a wonderful time beating the thavil and sweating...!!! This is another example of IR's creative use of these instruments almost entirely in a rock style. I am not sure whether we can call it a rock, but perhaps should name it as IR-style rock! I can't think of any other example of such use.
I wonder whether anyone else had noticed this..

You are right ravi.. There are certain instruments which west has not even heard of.
We should respect our music as much as we respect their music. Illayaraja weaved magic out of those instruments. He was a source of so many innovative ideas.
