I recently read this Music Magazine article, posted by Naaz in another thread.
http://www.themusicmagazine.com/rahmanbsides.html
An excerpt:
"A R Rahman's success in creating hit numbers that simultaneously set the cash registers ringing and the dance floors swinging has been well documented. However, unfortunately lost in the din of Chaiyya Chaiyyas and Muqala Muqablas are unsung numbers (pun unintended), songs that can soothe you with their melody or gently torment you with their pain, tracks that never busted the charts for various reasons, tracks that are unlikely to make it to the compilation albums.
This list explores a few dark and obscure numbers that would have probably ended up as B-sides, but that nevertheless merit attention for their artistic brilliance.
1. Dholna - Thakshak/Mehboob/Sukhwinder Singh...
2. Pyaara Sa Gaon - Zubeidaa/Javed Akhtar/Lata Mangeshkar...
3. Zahreela Pyar - Daud/Mehboob/Asha Bhonsle, Leena Chandra Das...
4. Ishwar Allah - 1947/Javed Akhtar/Sujatha Mohan, Anuradha Sriram...
5. Thenmerku Paruvakarru - Karuthamma/Vairamuthu/ Unnikrishnan, Chitra...
6. Sengaatrea - Taj Mahal/Vairamuthu/T K Kala...
7. Vidukadhaiya - Muthu/Vairamuthu/Hariharan...
8. Poogum Vazhiyellam - Ratchagan/Vairamuthu/Chitra...
9. Roshan Hui Raat - Sapnay/Javed Akhtar/Anuradha Sriram...
10. Mel Isaiyae/Mr Romeo/Vairamuthu/Unni Menon, Swarnalatha, Srinivas, Sujatha..."
I was surprised to see no. 10 on the list as it was my most fav number from Mr Romeo. I believe the Tamil version of no. 9 is Anbendra Mazhayile from Minsara Kanavu.
Another excerpt from the same article:
"Too bad you cannot buy a compilation of these songs from any store. But make yourself one and believe me, with it playing on your stereo, you'd want to hit more reds than greens on your ride to work."
I was inspired enough by those lines upload some of those tracks onto my yahoo briefcase in the past few days. I have the mp3s for 4, 5, 8 and the Tamil version of 9. I'll be uploading no. 6 within the next few days. Those interested, send me an email.
It's usual for certain tracks in ARR's albums to gain mass popularity while some really good numbers get overshadowed despite their excellence, which in some of our opinions, may have deserved more credit than those mass popularity numbers.
This thread is to celebrate those 'unsung' classics.

To start off, some of the songs which I felt had been often overlooked/sidetracked.
1. Porkkalam -Thenali.
While Swaasame, Injarango and Athini Chithini were played and replayed on TV, this song did not get as much attention, but is a really sweet song. In the movie, it was kind of ruined by the comical picturisation.
2. Enge Enadhu Kavithai -Kandukonden Kandukonden
The most popular songs from this album seemed to be the title song, Smaiyai and Enna Solla Pogirai. However, this song is a gem to say the least and IMO deserves to be ranked higher than stuff like Smaiyai.
3. Poo Kodiyin Punnagai -Iruvar
Though this song is definitely not the best from Iruvar, while listening to the album recently, I was surprised to hear this song. I believed I had not heard it before. It's amazing to listen to, especially the interludes. No one would guess it is a 90s number. I was surprised at having missed it.

WhyNot.. to add to ur list.. "Kayyil midhakkum kanavaa nee" from Ratchagan..Srinivas has done full justice to the song and so did vairamuthu.. maybe the picturisation killed the song big time..?!!!..

"Margazhi thingal Allava" in Sangamam and "Malargale Malargale" in Lovebirds are also very good songs....I wish ARR concentrates more composing such songs with soul rather tha feet tapping numbers which doesn't linger in our heart for quite sometime....

Good topic WhyNot.
It is unfortunate that many of the melodic songs of ARR do not become as popular as his fast numbers.
My contribution: Evano oruthan yaasikkiraan from Alai Paayuthe, easily the best song in the album.

Whynot ROTFL both of you have mentioned my favorite rahman songs, both in aspects of music as well as picturisation. Poonkudi (sung by Sandhya? sounds so much like P.Susheela) was beautifully shot by Mani and equally impressive performance by mohanlal-gowthami ....so starkingly reminded of the MGR-Sarojadevi, MGR-Savithiri duets !!!
The same goes with Evano oruvan again in my opinion one of the best picturised Mani Ratnam songs..
To add my contribution ..i have to partly digress a little bit i always liked song from kabhi na kabhi (hindi) "tume meri nigahon mein" from the ..thats definitely me all time favorite rahman melody !!and also beautiful interludes.(i later found out that it was the hindi version of unnikrishnan's number (Sakhiye?) in anthimantharai..i liked the hindi version better ) I havent seen the movie, can anybody comment on the way the song was picturised?
One more digression from tamil
another grossly overlooked number IMO would be "Ye Jan" from Daud, rendered by kavitha and Vinod??...beautiful song tho i would say it would be more apt in the haunting melody category ....

Why Not:
1) Uyirum neeyae - by unnikrishnan in pavithra. This song was, according to my humble opinion a very good response to Ilayaraja's "Ammavendrazhaikatha.." in Mannan. In fact even better than IR's song, if you appreciate the raga Kamas (if I am not mistaken)
2) thendrale - Mano, Unnikrishnan, Dominique in Kaadhal Desam.
The melody in this song is too good.
3) chitthirai nilavu (Jayachandran. Minmini) in Vandicholai Cinna rasu
-If you like Jil Jil from KM, you will love this one too by Jayachandran
4) thoda thoda malarndadu enna (SPB, Chitra) in Indra
-this song again did not make it to the top but is actually one.
5) naalai ulagam (Unni Krishnan, Sujatha) - Love birds
This is one song with a lot of good BGM interludes in the song. Sounds similar to Malarodu Malar (Sujatha, chorus) in Bombay which too is a nice song mostly used as BGM in that movie
6)puththam pudhu bhoomi vendum (Mano, Chitra)
-Thiruda Thiruda
Man, this song is good. I really want to become filthy rich (through hard work) unlike the circumstances in that song and sing that song out loud. Good lyrics, BGM and tune.
7) nee kattum selai (T L Maharajan, Sujatha)
Pudhiya Mannargal
Nice beats in this song. Listen to this and then to Signore in KM. You will notice similarities. Nonetheless, this one is better.
8) azhagu nilave (Chitra) - Pavithra
Another melodious one. sounds similar to Thendralae in 2) above
9) Nenje nenje (K J Yesudas, Sadhana Sargam)
-Ratchagan
This is also a good song with the exception of Sadhana Sargam's pronunciation (one of her earlier tamil kolais)
10) kissa hum likhenge (M G Shreekumar, Anuradha Paudwal) - Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (Hindi)
Melodious number.
11) Karisal Tharisil (Sri Kumar, Chitra)
Tajmahal
Short but sweet number
12) Nahin Samne (Hariharan, Sukhvinder Singh)-Taal
I was moved by this one
13) Kariye Na (Sukhvinder Singh, Alka Yagnik)-Taal
Nice and rhythmic
14) Azhagana Raakshasiye (S P Balasubramaniam, Harini, Prakash) - Mudhalvan
Nice song in Reethigowla raga. Remember Chinna Kannan Azhaikiran by IR?
15) Roja Roja (Unnikrishnan) - Kadahalar Dinam
16) Enna Vilai (Unni Menon) - Kadahalar Dinam
17) Kadhalenum (S P Balasubramaniam, Swarnalatha)
Kadhalar Dinam
Both 15 and 16 are good ones not recognized as much.
My personal favorite is 17.
18) Thirakatha Kootukkulle (Unnikrishnan, Chitra)
En Swasa Kaatre
Great song with a melodious BG
19) Mehndi Hai Rachnewali (Alka Yagnik)
Zubeidaa
Rhythmic song.
20) O Paalanhare (Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, Srinivas, Chorus) Lagaan
-Has not received the recognition it deserves because all other songs are talked about more often. Though this sounds more like a Bhajan, its a melodious song
Last but not the least
Vellai Pookkal (A.R.Rahman)-Kannathil Muthamittal
will probably get lost after a couple of years and will re-appear in one of these threads. This is very good song rendered well by Rahman, but will be overshadowed by Jil Jil by Jayachandran.
Thanks for starting such a thread.

This song IMO is the biggest disgrace of ARR.
Do you know that it is a note-to-note copy of MSV's Chamchidi chamchidi chamchidi cham .... Pesu mani muthu rojakkal?

Kaathu Kaathu Dinam from Uzhavan, amazing melody, but somehow lacks something just making it short of great.

I might be wrong but I recall "nenje nenje" from Ratchagan is by Alka Yagnik and Hariharan. Another "overlooked" song is oruvan oruvan mudhalali from Muthu. Perfect song for Rajini.

LoveBirds and Anthimandarai are two other albums that are overlooked. Love birds is a good album to play. Samba Samba showed us Prassana's trademark playing. Come on Come on had really good mute guitar. Nalai Ulagam had good strings, but those soundfx distract. Malargale too had good interludes. Infact, pay attention to this song, the percussion accompnying the pallavi after the first charanam could be very well a bass guitar score. Similiar is the case with Pyaara sa gaon. The percussion in the first interlude could be a decent piano accompaniment or a beautiful guitar accompaniment. Thats Rahman's creativity.
More input on this style?

'pennalla pennalla oothappoo' my favourite, though inspired by mozart.
'nila kaigiradhu' from Indira and the song where the lady love swoons into coma if not death.
'Barota Barota' and 'Chitirai Nilavu' from Vandicholai Chinnarasa.
'Rakozhi Rendu' 'Maari Mazhai Peyaadho' and the rest in the album Uzhavan. thought that this was better than Roja only to be proved wrong.
'Neekattum Selai' from Puthiya Manargal.
'Sambo Sambo' 'July Madham Vanthal' from Pudhiya Mugam
