ARR's use of S. Janaki

Hi everybody

It is interesting to note that during his entire career so far ARR has used S.J in only 5 songs so far. Not that it bothers me; infact I am pleasantly surprised. I have felt SJ is very talented but unfortunately her voice does have some 'pisuru' in most of her songs. I have listed below ARR/SJ combi. songs.

1. Ottagaththai Kattikko...SPB & SJ (Gentleman)
2. Kathaazha Kaatu Vazhi...Jayachandran & SJ (Kizhaku Cheemayile)
3. Errani Kurrathaisi...SPB & SJ (Kaadhalan)
4. Uvathi Kalai..Pakka Gentleman.. SPB & SJ (Super Police)
5. Thaniae Thaniae..SJ (Rangeela)

In fact even among these songs the first 2 are the ones worth mentioning. Song 5 in Rangeela is a wonderful in Asha's voice (hindi version) than the tamil version.

What do others think about this--a welcome change or is it otherwise? May be there could be a vote on the 'survey section' if tfm administration group notices this thread.

  Yes, I totally forgot that junk song ("Parotta") from "Vandicholai chinraasu". Of course, SPB, Chithra, SJ and PS have all sung junk songs, but they form a small percentage of their total.

  Definitely, that song ("Edhukku Pondaatti") from "Kizhakku cheemayilae" is a junk. Indha Tamizhanukkum adhu suthamaaga pidikkaadhu. But, there are so many more junk songs with ARR as the MD, like 'Lucky... Lucky", "mercury pookkal", ("Ratchagan") and "anbe... ennaalum", "ada... muthu muthu" ("Mr.Romeo"). The point is that, as Srinath said, ARR need not use talented singers like SPB, PS, SJ or Chithra for these songs. He has got Ila Arun and UN to sing these songs for him.

  By saying talented singer like SPB, PS, etc., I meant only those who can sing fluently in Tamil. It does not mean that Ila Arun and UN are not talented. I just meant to say Ila Arun and UN are not that much fluent and their talents are not comint out while singing in Tamil So, no brick bats please!!!

  SJ is no more a good singer. Her voice is now bad, though she was fabulous in her heydays. Newer singers ought to get a chance after all!!

  If you consider "parotta parotta" a junk number..have you heard the other junk numbers that SPB has rendered...I sometimes used to wonder why they take up such assignments...for instance the "rap" number from the film "Krishna"...I heard it on Chennai FM in 1994 and almost puked...music director I think was SAR..."parotta parotta" maybe is more bearable...

  I agree that S Janaki,Lata,Asha,P Susheela all need to stop now - the newer singers Chitra, Sadhana,Sujatha,Kavitha all deserve more chances as they are more melodious than the PRESENT SJ,PS,AB,LM.
  
  I felt bad to see S Janaki's concert on TV recently. Her voice sounds too coarse. Same for the others too!!

  LV. I am very sure. It is Lata and not SJ. Check the cassette or CD cover and listen the song.

  LV. my favorite is not LRE. I like LRE songs & SJ songs too. My favorite are PS and VJ.
  Since SJ is not favorite, nothing stopped me to listen her songs. Whatever I told for SJ are applicable for PS and LRE also.
