I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Thanks for the link.

I hope your note brings results. The website is jammed most of the day usually. My friends from other cities have also mentioned this in their email to me.
Let's hope the menace eases...
And: Post again here. We miss you!

Kalai: Thanks a lot for that link.
Kaumudi- yes, the programme is too good. I feel bad when I think of the episodes that I have missed.
Naaz: Good idea (about event coverage, I mean)- Will someone take it up in earnest?
Btw, I mananged to find the film names of some of the Malayalam songs that featured in the programme:
Thedi thedi gnaan alaingnu- Sindhu
Mani muzhangi, kovil mani muzhangi- Ankakkuri
Kannil poovu, chundil paalu thenu- Vishukani
Nayaka Gayaka- Lakshmi Vijayam

Saravanan / Kaumudi -
Thanks for supporting the "coverage" idea. I personally think that it will be a great asset to newtfmpage (given that their "news" section is slower than the slugs in my garden :-)) There are so many thoughtful, original and committed
individuals/writers here who can do a fine, objective and informed job of these assignments. If the thought is what counts...let's hope someone high up in the admin. pantheon will follow through with action.
Saravanan - Your write-up about VJs Asianet reveals a stark and unavoidable truth: Excellence and Committment of a Artiste are NOT valued in TFM. I can spew on and on about MDs and their disregard for trained, qualified and proven singers...but I'd rather not. The current day TFM music scene says all you need to know and hear about degeneration of tamil as a language and singing as an art.
SJ says the same thing in her interview in the Hindu (pls check the SJ's Quality thread for the link.)
Thanks for the details about the malayalam songs.

I've been trying to figure out a VJ-(SPB or TMS) duet, which came out around the same time as "Aval Oru Pachchai Kuzhandhai..." and was similar in "mood". Does anybody have a clue what this song that is perandugying me is?
Also, does anybody have a MP3 file / link to
Kaatre Sellu Oru Kadhal Thoodhu Ival Eangum Madhu from Pozhudhu Vidinjachchu? (MD: IR)
and also:
Manjal Araikkumbodhu Madhiaeri Parththa Machchan
from Aallukkoru Aasai? (MIO has Kannakku Parthu from the same film. But not this VJ solo.)
Thanks in advance!

How perceptive and accurate you are!!
Yes, that is indeed the song that has been looming wordlessly in my head for the past 48 hours!
It was VJ-SPB, right?

Did Lorry Driver Rajakannu (Sivaji a sight for sore eyes:-)) have another VJ-TMS duet which went:
"Rajathi Rajanakku Rani Mele Kadhaladi..." ?
Or is that from another film? I have not heard the Ennenbadho song...or if I have, I am drawing a blank on the tune.
I am also desperately seeking a MP3 file of the VJ-SPB duet "Gowri Manohariyai Kandaen..." from Dowri Kalyanam. I don't believe it is available on the net...
Saravann, have you heard this VJ solo:
"Kanna Un Radhai Azhaikkindra Velai, Unnakenna Velai, Nee Thandhu Naan Vazhgiraen..." from Chinna Chinna Veedu Katti? (MD:SG). It is a fine song, but, as usual, did not get the airtime it deserved.

There is a tidbit connected to the Avalae En Kadhali song:
Many years ago, when I met VJ for the Indian Express interview, she told me that she was in the recording studio being briefed on the the song and just about ready to go ahead with a take, when she was summoned to the phone. It was PS on the line, with good news: VJ had been awarded the BPS award for Ezhuswarangalukkul.
VJ said this to me: It was great to hear the news, but what made it special was that PS was the messenger."Such a dear and generous colleague" VJ said.

Thanks for the corrections. Viswaroopam also had this TMS solo:" Naan Pattakkadan Eththanaiyo Bhoomiyil Pirandhu..." ? (This song had a trace of "Vannakkili Sonna Mozhi Enna Mozhiyo...and I would easily substitute the verses when I was humming it!)
Dorai -
Enge Naan Kanbaen En Kadhalan is a well sung duet. In some ways (given the choice of instruments - (bulbultara?,) the "period" effect used by IR) it presaged the later "Naan Siriththaal Deepavali"
Surya -
You are right indeed!
Mele "Dowri Kalyanam" parththaena, adhanal than kuzhappam...see and do go together...this is one such instance! Thanks for the correction. Mazhalai Pattalam was a fun film. I thought it was better than Khatta Meetha (which in turn was a remake of Yours, Mine and Ours!) and I thought VV and Sumitra was wonderfully understated in their performances.
Where is Sriram these days??

There is only one person in these parts who can answer your wonderings...He will, if he can, I am sure!
This morning I heard this VJ-SPB duet after many many years:
Sela Kodapidikka Kaathu Jillunnu Veesudhadi...
An unusual composition and VJ-SPB perform with aplomb. Was the MD MSV?

This week’s recap of Sangeetha Sagaram: (Sponsored by Kalyan Silks, Palace Road, Thrissur- May their profits increase tenfold!!)
Watched ‘ Laesa Laesa’ thirai vimarsanam on Sun TV, and switched over to Asianet hurriedly, just in time to see the caption “ Please stand by for a grand “muzical” presentation”----then the shots of Vani singing, smiling, nodding her head – glimpses again, of her singing ‘Bole re papi’, SJ’s ‘Radhaiyai penn paarka’ and PS’s ‘Aalaya manaiyin osaiyai’—a bonus treat this week was a brief (alas!) bit of ‘Broche vaa’-but that moment was a treasured one---
This week’s episode was more a leisurely tête-à-tête with KC’s probing questions intent on bringing to the fore Vani as a person- and what a gracious, principled, warm
human(e ) being she comes across as---
KC kicked off the chat session by asking her about how VJ accepts sorrow or happiness.
Vani gave a wry smile and said that life is 50% joy and 50% sorrow- and this applies to all human beings, not only artistes. Artistes face both periods of struggle and phases of success, she emphasized. Her face lit up when she acknowledged the support of her husband (“Jairamji”)- “I hide nothing from him- whatever happens in the Studio, I share with him- even when I’m hurt- he’s like a Swamiji- he’ll patiently explain to me “ Vani, try to look at it from the other person’s point of view- don’t take it to heart”- he’s such a practical person”
Vani continued, in a thoughtful strain “ Artistes, as such, tend to be more emotional than other people. In my time, I have seen it all- competition, rivalry—But—I have never let frustration take over”- she smiled again, a trifle bemusedly, I thought. She went on to add that thankfully, she didn’t limit herself to film music; hence she is active even today, when her film career is all but nonexistent. “ Sangeetham is not merely film music- sangeetham is a sagaram- I have expanded my horizons”
She then talked about how learning is a continuous process. She gave an instance of when she had half an hour before a programme in Lucknow, she went to a master (Dharamnathji) and learned some kajris (?) from him- she then sang soulfully “ Dhir aayi hai kaarebhadhariya, raadhe bin laage na mora jiya’- she then advised KC “You have to be a student till the very end”
KC was mischievous in his next question – he said, with a twinkle in his eye “If I ask you if you have finished learning classical music----?” VJ broke into a childlike smile and answered serenely “ No one can say “I have finished Thodi”- it is only 7 notes, but the kalpana is thousandfold”
Have you listened to Vani’s Oriya song that goes ‘Sipaalee jaavo na jaree’(?)- awesome is the word- Vani sang a few lines from it, and added humbly that she bagged the Orissa Govt.’s Award for the song. Not surprising!
KC then asked her about her Kashmiri songs. Vani was all smiles when she recalled that the song she sang for the inauguration of Srinagar DD was among Rajiv Gandhi’s favourite songs. She couldn’t recall the words exactly, but hummed the pallavi, with a few words that she remembered. She reminisced with nostalgia, that she participated in the inauguration of Bombay DD (along with Bismillah Khan and others) and in the inauguration of Madras DD as well (with Seergazhi Govindarajan & others).
Vani then sang a lovely Bengali song that goes – ‘Sheey gaan kano ami paree na sho raale’(forgive me for messing up with the words!). She explained that she is constantly touring various states, giving concerts. Her concerts are of two types, she categorized, either they comprise wholly of Hindi devotional (or South Indian, as the case may be) songs, or they are a medley of Bhajans, Gazhals and choice film songs.
Another incident that she recalled- She had been invited (by the Maharaja of Jodhpur) to participate in an International Seminar on Meera- it was to be held at the Palace on a full moon night. In the afternoon, the Maharaja sent for her, and requested her to sing, in the evening, a song based on Maand Raag, a song that goes ‘Kesariya Baalam’, an authentic Rajasthani song- Vani learned the entire song from a cassette, practiced on its nuances, polished the notes, and when she sang it in the evening, it was received with raptures in the august assembly—She sang it again for us ‘Kesariyaa Baalam, aavo nee padhaaro, mare dhesu’. It was spellbinding- I could visualize the Palace Hall and the night of enchantment-
KC asked her if she could understand the meanings of the words- Vani recited the lyrics and explained the meaning- the song seemed to be a hospitable invitation from the Rajasthani natives to visit their desert abode.
Vani added that knowing the meanings is imperative to get the feeling of the song- “feelings illengil patillae illae”, and she took care to understand the lyrics in any language before singing the song- KC asked her about Urdu- VJ replied that she learned under a Moulvi to get her pronunciation perfect. She spoke about the album Parvaaz, which was recorded in Bombay in 1983, she praised Murali Manaohar Swaroop, who was the man behind it. She sang “Hum mein koyi baat naheen hai lekin’ again, and explained the meaning (she didn’t know Naaz and CV have already explained it to us : -)) “People go by faces- literally face value- no one sees what is in your heart” – she said. She added that it was the philosophy of life itself- “There is something to learn from every human being”- she remarked.
This week’s VJ’s Malayalam songs :
KC brought to her memory, a fast-paced song that shook up mfm when slow, melodious songs were the order of the day- VJ zoomed in on the song he was hinting at- ‘Chitra varna pushpagala urukki vechu’ from the film Ayalathe Sundari (S-G’s music, Vani added). As she sang the pallavi , the camera moved to a young girl who sang the rest of the song, and as she ended, we had Vani echoing the last line ‘Kuthuvilakkeduthu gnaan sweekarichu’-
Another aspiring singer sang the classical song ‘Adhvaithamrutha varshini, ananda chinmaya roopini’
The last song was announced as a song that will find place as an immortal film song- ‘Ethu pandhal kandaalum adhu kalyana pandhal, ethu melam kettaalum, adhu kalyana melam’
The narrator ended with a touching tribute –‘Vani is a representative of that generation of singers for whom music was the very life breath’
As the episode came to a close- Jayachandran was shown singing ‘Raasaathi unnai kaanatha nenju’- as a curtain raiser for Monday’s episode featuring him- another representative of that fast-disappearing generation--

Thanks once again for the nice write-up. Sangeetham is a sagaram - so true. May she sing more and more songs for people like us. If she is not singing in any movies, then we know that they are missing out something, not the other way around.
Although this is a malayalam program, it seems like a lot of Tamil (in the form of songs etc) flows through the program. Are there any telugu songs of VJ that were ever played apart from Shankarabharanam? Just curious that's all.
