'Kaatrukenna veli' - a classic song from MSV-SJ combo and the starting briha is a feat and can be met only by accomplished singers. SJ is one of the rare singers who can express the effusive joy and happiness. No wonder SPB considers SJ as the best female voice for film music.'Kannan manam ennavo','Unnidathil ennai koduthen','Thenilangai mangai' , 'ninaivu koorum neenda naatkal' , 'Oomai pennai pesa sonnal ' are some of the unforgettable songs in MSV-SJ team.
The lyrics goes
'Gangai vellam sombukkulle adangi vidaadhu' AND not 'Sangukulle'

Thongatha Kannindru ondru
SPB always attempts to do one better with each new song. For a singer not trained in Classical his swara singing has always impressed me .....whether it is Sangeetha Jathi mullai or Shankarabaranam.Absolutely innovative singing. How many "Gnabagam"s!(Vaalis predictable lines....hmm)
KVM s interludes have always ranged from passable to mediocre.he used to compensate with great & memorable tunes. This one is no exception.we used to reduce the volume while listening to interludes of "Poon thenil kalanthu" in olden days. With all these, this song is impressive still. As usual, listening to this one after a very long time.
R Sunderrajan gets such a long write up?Does he deserve one?He was one of the architects....should i say co-conspirator with P Vasu to ruin TF during 1980s.No great screen plays, mediocre story line, dull dialogues ....he was a master of all.But as the famous Sashi kapoor line goes "Mere pass Maa hai" - RS had IR.
Mike holding Mohan - "Karantha palil KaLLichottu Visham & Ambika - Aalakala Visham.
Singing these lines "Andavan mugathey paarkanum naan avanidam onne onnu ketkanum" - Andava!Mohan pirappin ragasiyam enna? (If god speaks Hindi unfortunately,I will ask about Rajesh Khanna)
Sumaithangi followed by another Soga geetham -BB my weekend needs some pep.How about "Alangaram pothumadi"(Mr.Sampath) or "I will sing for you"(manitharul manickam") or "Hello! My darling ippo Kathal (Engirutho vanthaL).

simialr confusion happend for one stage singer called shanthi (sruthi grp) for 'poovarasam poo poothachu' song. she used to sing "Poovarasangoo poothachu". Dinathandhi nirubar pointed out this mistake to her. this non-clarity of words arise evident due to strong (nasal) pronounciation of 'inn', 'ing', 'imm' etc by the artist.

Great write up Sara...in particular the addendum >>>>an impossible supposition in either Cheran or Blue Mountain Express, even in 1983..<<<<< lit up my day.

OISG, thankfully you didnt write the 'h' in caps. Some days back in this thread someone wrote 'Mike Holding Mohan' and I was wondering for hours whatever made him compare Mohan to the Jamaican arrow!

Mythila,Observer: I listened to the song twice. It is 'sangukkulle'. You have look at the choice of words and 'ethukai' and 'monai'! It is ganGAi vellam sanGUkkulle adanGI vidaathu
manGAi nenjam ponGUmpodhu vilanGUgal ethu.
I have capitalized the GA and its variations.
Is it 'thoongatha kannindru' or thoongatha kannondru -a sleepless eye?

bb, requests for future SOTD:
1. Konja neram ennai marandhen by TMS,SJ from Sirithu vaazha vendum(MSV). TMS is a little too nasal in this song, but otherwise this is a terrific composition in Saranga. Check out SJ's brighas in this song.
2. Kannan mananilamai - GR - an excellent raagamaliga rendered masterfully by SJ again.
These 2 songs are available in SK's PPP SJ site, if not I can mail you. I have listened to it countless times but these deserve to be made SOTDs for many more DFers to listen to and enjoy.

Song of the Day: kaadhal vandhadhum from Poovellaam un vaasam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaadhalvan.rm
- Poovellaam Un Vaasam is a good album by Vidhyasagar, one of his best. The film will always be special to me, because it was the first film my wife and I saw after our marriage.
- The film was not a big hit, a sentimental movie about two families that are very close at the start and then a crisis hits and they drift far apart. Jyothika and Ajit from the two families love each other, and Yugendran causes some problems. The highlight of the film was its music. Vidhyasagar did himself good, with songs like "Thaalaattum kaatrE vaa" and "Thirumana malargaL tharuvaayaa", wonderfully sung by SwarnaLatha. But, this song, "kaadhal vandhadhum" is my favorite. Sung by Sadhana Sargam and KJY. Probably one of the few songs sung by KJY for Vidhyasagar in thamizh.

Good one, bb! (though my pick from the film is 'Pudhu malar thottu chellum kaatrai niruthu')
The picturisation was a big let down though, with the usual group dancers, and Jyothika's overstated expressions adding to the agony.
Lyrics are by Vairamuthu.

A Great Song Except for Sadhana Sargam's Continous Spoilage of Tamil.
but for that It's an Awesome Song by Vairamuthu & Great KJY with a very neat Expressions by Ajit & Jothika
Jothika Does these Expressions With ease while Other artists(current) fail to do ..
her Expression in Thriumana Malargal tharuvaya is awesome.
As Saravanan Said Even my Pick from the Film is "Pudhu Malar Thottu" by Sriram Parthasarathy Disciple of Neyveli R.Santhanagopalan.
This film along with DIL gave Vidyasaagar a Re-Entry in TFM
Thanks for a nice Song

Hello, i posted something like 'i wasted 20 Rs' afetr listening latha mangeskar songs. A perosn (VR_Rasigan_sk) came very harshly on me. He say :- 'Some fellow has lamented about losing 20 rupees for listening to these songs; very sad! Instead of coming to SOTD thread and making such comments he could have gone to coolgoose to dl 'kalyAnam kattikkittu kutti pOdavA' etc.'.
in my comment, i hv not personally attacked anybody, but i ventilated my feeling only. Tamzih patta Hindi-yila ezhdhi koya koya-nnu paadinadhu ennakku pudika la.
Ungalukku pudikkudhu solla urimai undu, i agree. Ada pola, enakku pudikala-nnu solla urimai undu.
i was upset with comment of VR_Rasigan_sk and i did not post anything after that. today i written a mail to bb telling my feeling. he said you continue to post your comments with your view and nothing wrong. After bb replied, i felt bit ok.
now i share my feeling after listening sumai thangi song. I have not heard this song fully before. but i know start line of this song. regarding me, i am dip holder in EEE and not having a good job. am working now in small firm. Searched for good job but no good things coming up. somehow i developed some infereity complex and accuse me always. so, i always do my work and being alone. this is the first time i listened to manithan enbavan song fully. again i listened. 2
more times. every line is very useful and it is not just a cinema pattu. seriousaly am telling. This song gave some good relief to my complex problem. .
i am not saying i am now become deivam or great. But what i say is i should be confident. 2-3 times failure analum, i shld try continuously. i will get a good job. am tellking this to me now. very useful song for poeple like me.
pinkuruippu:- this does not tell that all old song (esp latha song) will teach me something.
bb:- sorry am late for posting on sumai thangi song. thank you very much. enakku manapadam ayachu this song.

Narayan,
Dont take things too seriously in this thread - sometimes you will be attacked when you upset someone - take these lightly. As far as possible personal attacks are to be avoided. :-))
Please do keep visiting this thread for great music and good luck with your pursuits.

I was the one who wrote as V(ana)R(atham)_Rasigan_sk. Sorry if my posting had offended you. To me, the "20 Rupees" comment looked like a very harsh comment on the VanaRatham songs and my posting was an instant reaction. I really should have posted in a softer vein. But I did not really mean anything harsh on you personally. My apologies once again! Please do not let this stop you visiting this thread. Continue to come to this wonderful SOTD thread and make useful comments, whether positive or critical.

No hard feelings in this thread please. After all, music is a great soother.
The song kaadhal vandadum was a good break after a series of fast numbers during the releases that time. AS rightly pointed out, Sadhana had let down at a few instances with a kind of nasal pronounciation but jo's ebullient face and charming smile kind of hid all those mistakes.
Nice song with good music and lyrics.
