I was reading the "Creativity of the MSV thread" and was struck by the concept of signature of an MD. The signature applies to the lyricists equally. Some motifs are used again and again. e.g. if a lyric talks about vervai it is probably written from Vairamuthu. If there are words from Telugu or Hindi, it is probably from Vali and so on.
Maybe we should start with Pattukkottai and go from one lyricist to another.

While `madhu' was hitherto used in the context of malar / poo, VM started using `kaL' for that IMO.

whenever i hear "brahman kanjan", i know they are by VM. he was also probably the first to use terms like "paaRai mEl poovaay muLaiththaayE" and "peNmai kaN thiranthathu".

Maraname irandhu pogum.
neruppu vendhu pogum
This type of pidhatrals are also typical of Diamandu.
other sadistic karpanais like:
Pookkalai keeruvadhal ratham varuma? ..
are also this guy's contributions.

signature of VM is "KaNmaNi... PonmaNi" It is probably because his wife's name is ponmaNi

I would NOT call VM's lines as 'sadistic' or 'pEthal' etc. It shows the depth of his vivid imagination. One has to read those lines in its entirety of the poem as against 'in isolation'. I will swing by here to the study of signatures of VM later during the discussion. Since the originator(of this thread) likes to start with pattukkOttai, let me start with PK. PK has many of those songs advocating rebellion, revolutionary fervors in one's mind. He has used those words like 'thambi','pappa', 'payal' targetting the younger generation in most cases. Examples are,
chinnapp payalE chinnapp payalE
thoongathE thambi thoongathE
thirudathE pAppa
Another song by PK causing 'vizhippunarchi' is
'eththanai kAlam than yEmAtruvAr intha nAttilE' in malaikkaLLan an inspiration from Robinhood.
Vaali almost commits forgery of sinatures;-)) of all lyricists and many a times you get fooled by making a guess that it was written by Kavingar or VM . I find it difficult to find a pattern in his lyrics except in some songs with vulgar meanings. I can give an example of a song which has some wordplay and so nicely written , but i could not believe it is by vaali. The movie urimaikkural has the following song
"kalyAna vaLayOsai kondu
kasthoori mAnpOla nindru
vanthALE iLavAzhan thandu
vAdAtha veNmullai chendu"
The song goes like in its 2nd charanam like
"yEr pidikka kaigaL idai pikikka
neer vayalpOl nenju negizhnthu nikka
ponnAna nelmanigal kannE unkanmanigaL
thanneerilE sevvAzhaipOl thanichchu nikkAthO"
Excellent interludes and a wonderful number.

Looks like VM is the one with the most recognizable signature!

Papanasam Sivan: Lots of Sanskritised words e.g. Vadaname Chandra Bimbamo - he could hv as easily written Un Mugam Chandra Bimbamo.
Kannadasan: Kannan is a constantly recurring motif. Tendency to re-use classical litt as evinced in Atthikkai, Veedu Varai Uravu etc.
Vaali: If there are lot of Hindi words, Telugu words, nonsense words, it is probably written by Vali.
Pattukkottai: Usage of spoken Tamil without resorting to slang, vulgarity etc.
Suradha, Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam: Quite literary Tamil.
Kottamangalam Subbu: A deliberate attempt to use slang, "low-class" Tamil.

i think VM was the first to use "suyamvaram", and very effectively, in his lyrics. "mEgame mEgame" has the line "puyal varum vELaiyil poovukku suyamvaramO" and the "veerapandi kOttaiyilE" song from thiruda thiruda has "vaaLmunaiyil oru suyamvaramaam mangaikkuL oru bhayam varumaam"

vaali is not the author of only vulgar nos or with telugu, hindi words. He has also penned beauftiful lines like
buddan yesu gandhi pirandadu bhhomiyil edarkaga in
rikshakaran, yen endra kelvi in aayirathil oruvan to name a few.
