"It's complete ignorance & inadequate knowledge of other composers leads to make weird ideas like this"
ST, I would rather say it's your ignorance & inadequate knoledge of Raaja's music which leads you to make such comments.

I downloaded this from John Scott's Web site(the man who conducted IR's symphony by the RPO). You & Others may find it interesting. I could e-mail the actual web-page if anyone wants.
Q & A Dear John
John Scott's Column
As time permits, John Scott will answer your questions and have the answer posted here. This week's question comes from Anbu Ramasamy:
Mr. Scott,
I think you are one of the best composers around & my mission now is to go out and get all your CDs. Please keep composing & keep releasing your music.
The question I have is somewhat involving you and another person. I was thrilled when I heard that you were going to conduct the symphony for Mr. Ilayaraja from India when he was commissioned to write a symphony. Mr. Ilayaraja is my favorite Indian composer & I couldn't believe my ears when I came to know another one of my favorite composers (you!) was going to conduct it. There was a huge celebration for him in India with all the top personality & you honoring Mr. Ilayaraja. This was shown in the tele & I was ecstatic to see you on stage. As you were being garlanded on stage, I also happened have your CD 'John Scott's Favorites' gracing my glass cupboard with you in front. I so excitingly pointed out to my family members 'there that's him' & they really couldn't believe as well.
But till now, this symphony has not been released & there hasn't any news about it. I hope you can enlighten about its release & the work of Mr. Ilayaraja.

*************************
Dear Anbu (Singapore),
Thank you for your very kind comments. I am a very lucky person because I spend my life doing what I like, which is composing music.
It was very interesting to hear that you witnessed the Ilayaraja honoring ceremony on TV. I was flown from London to Madras specially for it. It was an incredible experience and I shall never forget it. Ilayaraja and I became very close friends and I have tried to encourage him to get his symphony released. I believe he was hurt by a critics review, and this is the reason it has not been released. I had the privilege of conducting the recording sessions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in London, and we all believe it deserves to be released. The trouble is that critics are capable of destroying sensitive artists and have done it throughout the history of music. The more one knows a piece of music the more one loves it, and the stupid critics are incapable of judging anything they have never heard before. They have seldom been right. There is a wonderful book by Nicolas Slonimsky entitled LEXICON OF MUSICAL INVECTIVE. It is a history of musical criticism since Beethoven's time. It shows how the critics have crucified every great composer without exception! I will contact Illayaraja and tell him about your kind remarks and that he owes it to us all to make his symphony available.
I send you my best wishes,

Arun -
Thank you very much for this clipping from the John Scott Q&A. While I have some reservations about his attitude towards critics and criticism (he does paint the whole lot with some real broad strokes,)nonetheless, he does come across as an affable sort. Do you know if he is still around at the RPO - or has he moved on?
What intrigues me more and more (given the varied versions that have been offered here in the last 48 hours about this Symphony and its genesis) is that the word "commission/ed" keeps appearing time and again. This is the axis of my interest in this query.
The Dhadkan.com biography makes no such claims and just states that IR was the first one to compose a symphony. The Questioner in your posting refers to it as being "commissioned." Now is this a deliberate misrepresentation of facts, or is there another reason for this recurrence (interestingly enough, it is usually IR fans/well-wishers who use the word "commission" - perhaps, not fully recognising its import in artspeak terms.)
Is there any clarification regarding this, Arun?
Please, by all means, post the link to the J.Scott page/site. It would also be interesting to know (and read) this critic who ravaged IR's magnum opus. Is that out in print? Or is that just an allusion to hearsay?
I look forward to your response. Thanks again.

I think people are trying very hard to prove very little here. I can't understand why IR should be called ''THE'' Indian FILM MUSIC composer of the century when non of the information above relates to FILM MUSIC. Simply because IR has scored Symphony & released few private albums is not a justification for FILM MUSIC. If you look at his FILM MUSIC achievement for the past 10 years then you will notice how good the other frontline music composers have achieved in FILM MUSIC. It is a shame that Genius like him did not score music for any of the reputable film directors in the past 10 years. At least he should try and grab an award from Tamil FILM MUSIC before anything else.

ST - When topic questions begin with "Why Shouldn't..." (an implicitly "FOR" proposition in the form of an interrogative,) my response is:
YEAH, GO AHEAD!
(I mean, what discussion could there possibly be after such rhetoric from the very outset??)

Anyone interested in the technical nuances of IR's music?

arun:
yes i have seen the lessons from RAAJA site - its wonderful. Another site on IR with a lot of BGM clips is rajanagham.com orsth.lie that. It was there where i was looking for the Balanagamma songs by Vani Jairam - sth. i was hunting for a long time.
IR is IMO the best composer in IFM - but well I guess there were a few others close to him, though not maybe upto his level. But their quantitative Output was less. Also I have heard Raaja has the uncanny knack of composing by just writing down the notations on a piece of paper from A-Z inclusive of interludes. Most MDs generally play their tunes on a harmonium or hum them.
Naushad (on his trip to Pune) had said that there is a lot he can learn from raaja. He often attends any function in tribute to Raaja.

avr, OP Nayyar does not attend any function honouring IR. Does that make sense.? same way"Naushad (on his trip to Pune) had said that there is a lot he can learn from raaja. He often attends any function in tribute to Raaja. " makes nos ense to me.How the music is composed hardly matters what comes out matters.Whether it is done with aharmonium or in a paper or a keyboard or as thaane thaane. So where doewsgreatnessor lack of greatness come in. Come on take a break.

How the music is composed hardly matters what comes out matters...so does it matter if it's suttufied also?:-) Then vEdA, SG, dEvA, SAR all will probably run neck to neck with OPN, Naushad, SDB, Salil....

all i meant is that Naushad himself has acknowledged IRs style of composing to be unique, thats it. Dont get so emotional.

also i never meant to say that there is a lack of greatness in anybody else, just that IR is IMHO the greatest. Note IMHO.

being able to compose a song (that too of the level of "elluil engO" or "poonkadhavE" or "ghallu ghallu ghallu..." or mouna ragam, anjali, sindhubhairavi kinds, by just imagining the notations and not changing even one note during the recording is sth. amazing for me. Its supposed to be unique.
this is what i have read in articles on raaja .... but please correct me if this is wrong.
Thanks for ur response, VENGAYAM

to me, he is the greatest ever. othere are there too.
but, being a fan (not a hcirf), i realise that this view is subjective only.
imho, when i feel sober, i also realise that in no field you can point out a person being the greatest ever.

You are right, Mahabs. GREATNESS (in populist terms) is always PROVISIONAL - and always subject to change with every new generation. (Five thundering flops in a row - and even the greatest film composer in Indian cinema - is suddenly yesterday's wonder.)
Celluloid fame is the ficklest of them all.
