Comparing Ramana and Sokka Thangam

Ramana and Sokka Thangam are the last two movies of Viajaya Kanth.

Ramana had music by Ilayaraja and Sokka Thangam by Deva.

Sokka Thangam songs are captivating and immediately attracts the listeners. Even the most hard core of IR fans however will have difficulty recalling Ramana songs. Sad, but true.

Let it be Rajini, Kamal, Vijaya Kanth, Ajit or Vijay, Deva RULEZ!

Only those who have listened to both the movie songs are requested to comment.

  SOnga alone don't consititue music
  There is a component called "Back ground music" .The BGM of shokka thangam was very avereage ,while that of RAMANA was excellent
  
  Also ,Shokka Thangam did not have a very good melody of the order of "Vaanavillae"

  Mumbai Ramki, only a few days ago, someone was commenting that Ramana's BGM was very poor and compared it with Vidhyasagar's Anbe Sivam for a similar situation. So, even in BGM Ramana was not that great.
  
  Listen to Sokka Thangam songs; they are very good and melodic.

  it was me who said that ...but u didn't read correctly ...i said BGM is rendered mostly with all outdated instruments....but VS has used sophisticated instruments for Anbe sivam's BGM...
  And who said ramana songs are not good...they are very nice and situational songs ....vennilavin periyamaatrava what a class song,vanaville what a orchestration and interludes,alli mudicha is my fav and is apt , deepavali song is so pwerful in composition(rendering not as powerful though)...and finally IRs song also very nice like en kuthamma of azhaki

HOW IGNORANT...ESPECIALLY THAT PARTICULAR SCENE DAILY ATLEAST ONCE I WILL PUT FOR BACKGROUND MUSIC...AFTER THE BUILDING COLLAPSED....SILENCE WAS GOOD INITIALLY AND REMINDED US OF WTC COLLAPSE...THEN WHEN HE LIFT THE CHILD AND FINDS HER LEG GONE THE MUSIC WAS TOO GREAT.....I WAS STUNNED....IF U SAY THATS NOT GOOD THEN U DEFINETLY GOT SOME PROBLEM.....

  This is a sick joke - most of Sokka Thangam Songs seem like recycled old IR songs. In my opinion Ramana songs (I think only 2 or 3 songs) were really creative and good and matched the mood of the scene - In fact I'm able to recall Vaana Ville and Rosi Rosi songs but not any of Sokka Thangam songs. I think quality of listeners have gone to an all time low if some one is saying Sokka songs are good.

  It is sick of course. But unfortunately not a joke.
  Why do IR fans claim for themselves all the GOOD songs? Especially when it is evident that IR CANNOT provide good songs any more? Nothing wrong with the listeners. Just that the quality of IR songs has sunk a new low.

  Vaana ville is a beautiful song in Raaga Dharmavathi. Can anybody dispute that?
  There is another good song in SriRanjani raagam .
  SriRanjani is one of the raagas which is not easy to understand and compose. But IR has effectively used SriRanjini raagam in many of his compositions like
  1. Kaalai nera poonguyil(Film Amman koil Kizhakaale)
  2. In film Gopuravaasalile also there is a lovely SriRanjini number Naadam Ezhundadadi
  3. Nadavinodangal from SalangaiOli
  4. Now in Ramana vennilavin perai matrava.
  Probably IR doesn't have a great lyricist
  (The lyrics are not definitely bad) backing , MTV,V Channels to popularise his numbers.

  IR fans do not claim that all IR songs are good. First understand that.. (Fyi,there was a thread called 'IR's dubba songs'. That was openned by an IR fan himself and many IR fans participated in that thread) Secondly IR composes songs for the situation of the scene. He doesn't compose songs to fill-in the gaps. Ramana songs are an example. When IR fans say that a particular song is good, they give reasons for it. Many IR fans have the knowledge to explain why and how it was considered as good.. If you have a different openion about that song then why dont you explain? Do not make a general statement like "It is evident that IR CANNOT provide good songs any more". No one will buy that, even ARR fans..

  mythila, your #1 entry is in Abhogi, not Sriranjani. #4 is Natai. I don't know about the others. Just thought I'd point that out. NOM. :-)

  Sokka thangam songs are rehash of old Bagyaraj movie songs, esp. Enna nenache. Read the Vikatan review for proof.

  x, once upon a time IR was delivering good songs, but not any more. 95% of his recent songs are unlistenable. Ramana is just one of this 95%.
  
  I don't know why people love to bash Deva when he delivers song after song that are a joy to listen.

  Ramana songs are anyday better than Sokka Thangam songs. Esp. VannaVille song is uncomparable to any song in Sokka Thangam. I like the starting humming, Piano bit, followed by Veenai...just mind blowing...followed by excellent singing by Sadana Sargam. I like the IR version too...
  
  I do not like any song in Sokka Thangam. I recorded all the songs and none of them impressed me so far.

  Ramana was excellent, Sokka Thangam was mediocre....
  
  After a long time, Ilayaraja has done some wonderful numbers, reminding us about his genius -who else can do a song in DHARMAVATHI, like Vaanaville.....

  I don't have to say anything more about appreciation from good Tamil weeklies like Kalki to discerning Tamil movie fans.It is like 'Vasishtar vaayal Brahmarishi' pattam. If u have read Kalki's movie reviews, they don't give undue praises to mediocre stuff. I reproduce verbatim what Kalki issue dated 8/12/2002 says about Ramana in the review :
  Uyirum, unarvum nirambi thathumbum uraiyaadal, thiraikadaiyin tempo vai irudhivarai kaapatrum padathoguppu, (read this pls) Unarchiyin vilumbukku ezhuthu varum pinnani isai aagiya inda nangu(4) amsangalukkum maanila virudenna desiya virude kidaithaalum viyappadarkillai.

  Sokka Thangam songs are better than Kaadhal Virus songs. The comparison shold stop there.
  
  Dr IR has given a wonderful song in "Vaana Ville...". I do not want to humiliate Dr IR with those of lesser mortals and copy cats like Deva, ARR, Vidhya Saagar etc.

  Cheenu, first let IR fight out with lesser MDs like Sirpy and SA Rajkumar. If he can produce better stuff than them, we will CONSIDER comparing him with Deva.

  Before I make an exit, Purv, the raaga of
