Friends,
I am a regular visitor for this site.
I have a question which is haunting me for a while.
We all know Priya was the first stereo in TFM in
1977.
Is there any specific reason why IR did not record those wonderful songs in "Stereo"in the following years between 1978 and 1982.
I know there were few in numbers even during that period.
Even after that he was not consistent.
Any thoughts?

Priya is not the first tamil movie to be recorded in stereophonic sounds, it was avanthaan manithan, (MSV).

Thanks Venkat.I did not know this for so many years. For whatever article I read and being a constant listener to TFM I was thinking Priya was the first stereo.
I will try and get a good version of AM and listen to it.

Priya is the first tamil movie to be recorded in stereophonic sounds. KJY imported the equipments for the first time for recording stereo sounds and he established his own recording theatere now called as " Tharangini". KJY invited IR to do recording for priya there in his place. So you can see all the songs in priya were sung by yesudas.

THE FIRST MOVIE COMPUTERISED MUSIC MIXING AND COMPOSING WAS PUNNAGAI MANNAN,RAAJA WAS THE COMPOSER ,AFTER THE MOVIE RAAJA DECIDED THAT IT WAS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO DO MUSIC AND CAME BACK TO HIS OLD FORM OF WRITING NOTES FOR EVERY BIT,SO WATEVER MUSIC U HEAR TODAY EXCEPT ILAYARAAJA'S IS THE COMPUTERISED FORM OF MUSIC WHICH WAS INTRODUCED AND REJECTED BY THE MAESTRO SOME 15 YEARS BACK

Music Lover,
'rejected' might not be the word to be used... IR 'tried' computerised music in a couple of movies which obviously was expensive and only quite a few hands good at that (like ARR who did for Punnagai mannan)... and the number of movies IR did per year was always huge... so he couldnt hv got time to sit and experiment in every movie... so he might hv reverted back to what he's used to... Notes-based compositions.

hey ram...wasn't priya recorded in hongkong in 16 channel track??? all the while i thought that was the case & didn't vikram came before punnagai mannan??? can someone throw some light???

Ok. Here are some facts;
1. avanthaan manithan was the first ever movie soundtrack recorded in 2 channel. The first batch of AM records released by EMI did not mention (in logo) that in the sleeves as they were afraid the sales will be affected (people may think they need special equipment to play it). But, it had a fineprint about the recording studio and conditions.
2. Priya was recorded in Singapore/HK (I do not exactly remember where, but I am sure it is either) and was publicized in bold (by then HMV, which used to sell players, released its first stereophonic turntable model called 1010, which is capable of playing 2 channel). But, I must mention that priya had a aweful sound engineering compared to AV (which was more subtle in handling the channels). Esp. if you listen the preludes of Darling, Darling... and the interludes of hey, padal ondru in original recording, with a decent pair of headphones you will find the deliberate fading and switching in channels (to introduce stereo to the uninitiated ears:)), I guess).
3. Vikram is the first movie to use "synthesized voice" as a part of vocals (those robot-sounding vikram-s) and MIDI synthesized interludes. What is more interesting is SJ voice is split and combined over multichannels to bring a chorus effect (there were only two people involved in this song Kamal and SJ, no chorus).
4. kavithai kElungaL in punnagai mannan is the first song that was arranged fully with a Computer. voices and instruments were combined and 'engineered' in a Computer (as against the standard - analog slider adjustments for engineering).
5. tharangini was estabilished in 1971 and Priya was released in 1978. "All songs sung by KJY" - has a different reason. It was the height of the (musical) battle between MSV and IR. Encouraged by the phenomenal success of 'vaan nila nila alla' in KB's pattinap pravEsam, MSV was bold enough to give about 10 songs, all but one to SPB (sambo was by MSV, in movie it comes as if rajini is standing by for kamal, so is MSV, standing by for SPB in reality) in ninaiththalE inikkum. Both the movies were based on original stories by Sujatha. KB originally wanted Sridevi in NI, but when sridevi slacked, he bought Jeyapratha (and owed to make her as popular as SD). SPB was becoming a phenomenon by then, so IR decided to bring out a musical hit without him, thus came KJY in the picture. There were also rumours that SP muththuraman wanted Kamal in Ambareesh's role for Priya, but Kamal was restricted by KB's "stay focused" order.

Devtional songs were recorded in Stereo much before Tamil film music got into the foray. TMS devotional albums in early 70s were already in stereo.
I agree that Priya was the worst mixed album ever. I am sure that composer (Raja) got inspired by the early 50s stereo recording of western pop and jazz music.

I remember there was a Radha Jayalaxmi (carnatic classical) LP released some time in '74 or '75. It was a Stereo LP.
But the first TFM disc in stereo I came across was Priya. I consider the recording as good. Many of the instruments are distinct and so clear.
Was another IR album, 'Guru', a kamal-sridevi movie done in stereo recording ?

priya's recording was far more superior than any other movie soundtracks at that time & compared to many even today...

I agree with "Evolution vii"and surprised to see some of the comments here about the recording of Priya.
I have indeed listened to the song"Engiruntho" from "AM" and I can noway compare that with Priya interms of the Stereo Effect is concerned.
It is a good MSV song no doubt about it but I am not seeing the seperation.
BTW you can download that AM song from "Vanijayaram.com" site.
To my knowledge I rate Priya as one of the best Stereo in TFM.

From Priya I guess some of the initial stereo's of Raja were "Pattakathi Bhairavan",'Sakkalathi',
'Guru' etc.But you cannot compare this with PRIYA as far as recording is concerned.
I think the next best well presented Stereo was
"Thanikattu Raja".
Listen to 'Santhana Katre' it is awesome
As far as MSV is concerned the first good one was
'vidiya vidiya' from Pokkirirraja.
I am not sure whether there is any other song before that.
If anybody has any info please contribute.

yup u right ganspb...pattakathi bairavan's "engengo sellum" is every fan's joy bringing the stereo effect plus "guru"'s sountrack though it did not generate the similar effect...as for "chakkalathi", i believe geeth shld be in right position to contribute..through 1 of her threads, she highlighted "chakalathi" as the other one in streophonic after priya..will geeth pls shed more light on this????

yeah evo7, we had discussed it some time back in another thread. chakkalathi was the second stereo release of IR. 'Vaadai vaattuthu' was the only hit in that album. nothing great in the song lyrics which goes with a folk touch, but the interludes are awesome. same with the background beat which has a nice flow all thro the song and the whole song gives a nice night effect.
nothing much to say about the recording here. 'Enna paattu paada' is another song which can be easily forgotten and there is another song which should have been a hit but didnt - again i forgot the starting lines, something like 'paaththi katti'. Last time saravanan helped me here.
And when it comes to recording i feel there is nothing to beat 'hathiakku sukkaava, slaaluvanku chinthaava...' and 'engengo sellum'...

I don't know whether I have said this but lemme repeat for new tfmers since u agree "enuiyr neethaney & enggengo sellum" as awesome...even the great "super actor" kamal has admitted in an interview that he had a soft spot for priya's songs especially "hey paadal ondru"..it seems he approached Ir & candidly questioned Ir why he(IR) did not give the song to him...
i know this info is abit off for this thread..just wanted to share this small info for the tfmers...:)

Before this thread comes to a rest, I would like to share my prized cd of priya to the rest of the tfmers.. An Inreco, ( The Indian Record MFG. Co.Ltd - Calcutta), original cd with a very good mastering which came out in 1996...
So I hope Mr Sridhar Seetharam changes his opinion of "priya" & putting our differences aside, lets enjoy the "En Uyir Neethaney"...once again!!! Enna sollureenga Geeth???
Thanks ganspb for opening this thread..
Though how i luv to put this song in 320kbs, due to my dial up limitation (which will take ages), I 'm forced to put in 128kbs....
http://www.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=70920
Another gem from IR's pattakathi bairavan
"engengo sellum"...a CD from Supreme records
http://www.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=70926
But after listening 2 both, most will feel priya will sounds very much superior...
IF only IR had mastered all of his songs in this technique after priya, imagine the joy we will have listening to all those songs again & again..plus he would have taken a quantum leap in TFM compared to many others...Past, Present & Future...
The other MD lovers pls do not flame me for saying this..its my humble opinion...I do appreciate ar rahman & the rest...
