Remember the Music Director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Kamal Hassan's Alavandhaan. They seem to be missing in the Tamil scene for the last 2 years and they are doing really good in the Hindi field. They have given solid musical hits in Hindi such as; Mission Kashmir, Dil Chahtha Hai. I think they can be brought to the Tamil films again. I feel they are definitely better than Deva and a few others. I think they are the best as far as Hindi Film Music goes after A R Rahman.
I would like healthy comments who listen to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and have a fair knowledge of Hindi Film Industry.

yea Ehsaan...that "F**K arts, lets dance" is kinda unsuitable for our Indian culture...
isn't music an ART in the first place?..
please ask the web designer to change it please....
just a humble request...coz u guys have the cleanest image in the industry...eventhough this 4-letter word is not referring to any specific person..but it is directed to a field (ART) which is highly regarded in India...please think abt it..

Hi ehsaan
First let me congrat you,shankar and loy for winning the FF award. Then back to my question.
What is the ultimate vision/dream that you think a musician (like u guys)should achieve in his life time as a musician? Is it conducting a grand sympony??

Ehsaan,
Got a Q. How do you guys go about composing a song?
I believe you use Logic and ProTools?
I guess one way to do is:
-->Sequence a rough cut in Logic.
-->Record to ProTools.
-->Add more live instruments.
-->Record Vocals.
-->Add/Change instrumentation to match vocals.
Is that the way to do it?
Do you oversee the mixing process too?
Will be great if you could give me an idea. I'm an aspiring musician..got a small set up at home with Cubase SX.

Hi Ehsaan,
This is Mirage back after quite sometime.
A guy from the Arr fan group posted that it was the 3 of u S-E-L, who composed the music for the latest Pepsi ad(The one featuring Shahruk and Saif in Hindi and Madhavan and Surya in Tamil).
Is that true? I have watched it just once, so can not comment much on that. However it sounded cool :-)

Part 1
Taal Tales: Chart talk with Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy
It’s the time to disco. Partners-in-chime Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy are even more chilled out after the success wave of Kal Ho Naa Ho. But some things remain the same—Loy is as composed, Ehsaan is as obliging and Shankar is as difficult to pin down.
Together, they make a successful team. Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya and Sameer Karnik’s Kyon… Ho Gaya Na will release soon. They have Aditya Chopra’s, Shaad Ali’s and Revathy’s next projects in their kitty. Life gets busier and more chaotic but the party goes on.
How reassuring has the success of Kal Ho Naa Ho been, after flops like Armaan and Kuch Naa Kaho?
Ehsaan : We did get a little worried about where we were going after our films failed. You do need successful films to survive; the music and the film have to work in tandem. Thankfully, both worked in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Shankar : We’re trying hard not to get affected by the success of the film! But what matters more to us is the fact that we were signed by a big banner like Dharma Productions. We had this image of being too Western, catering to a niche audience and not being part of hardcore Bollywood. The moment we signed Kal Ho Naa Ho, that changed.
Loy : Armaan and Kuch Naa Kaho had great songs. Unfortunately, if the film fails, the songs fail. But that doesn’t mean the film or the music are bad.
Is it true Shankar wanted to sing the title song of Kal Ho Naa Ho?
Ehsaan : Well, he did sing the title song but at the scratch level. But we’d decided early on that either Sonu Nigam or Udit Narayan would sing it. We wanted a slightly more popular voice.
Shankar : Every song is our baby. Since I am the singer in the team, I feel like singing all of them. It’s quite natural. But I consciously make an effort not to because it will put off other singers who will assume this music director sings his own songs!

Part 2
Composing Pretty woman must have been difficult, considering you were altering a classic number.
Ehsaan : It was very difficult. If we were going to just copy the original song, then why do it? We could have taken it the way it was. But we were asked to use the Pretty woman hook and nothing else. The song had to be composed around that. We also picked the antara from Pretty woman. The challenge was to put the song into an Indian groove and make it work. I think the bhangra beat flowed pretty well. It all fitted perfectly.
You mentioned hardcore Bollywood. Have you gotten used to it now?
Ehsaan : Yeah. We seem to have just slipped into the industry. I guess three of us are still what we were. That hasn’t changed. But what I like is that people have adjusted to our way of working. We have a different vibe and are not into the normal sycophancy that goes in the film industry—the hard-selling, “Waah boss, kya film banaya hai!”
And we have a completely empty bank account. We start composing only after hearing the script. We don’t tell producers, “Boss, aapke liye pundrah hazaar gaane rakhe hain.” No, we are here to work and that is what speaks. Fortunately we’ve worked with the right people.
Shankar : When Dil Chahta Hai came out, one music company said it would sell only in Malabar Hill. It was a huge success but we were still branded as Western music directors. The industry didn’t want to accept that we could do all kinds of music. We understand that they didn’t want to take a risk since a lot of money was at stake. Our thanks to Mr Ramesh Sippy who trusted us with a completely Indian score and gave us Kuch Naa Kaho. Now, Kal Ho Naa Ho has made life easier.
How different is it composing for film-makers as varied as David Dhawan, Farhan Akhtar, Rohan Sippy and Karan Johar?
Loy : Nikhil Advani!
Okay, Nikhil Advani and Karan Johar?
Loy : Nikhil Advani!
Okay, Nikhil Advani?
Ehsaan : We do have clashes at times but they’re harmless. Take Karan; he comes from a strong film background and whenever we’d stray from the brief, he would just pull us back a bit to a slightly realistic path. But that’s a creative argument, which helps create a better product in the end. It’s fun catering to different thoughts but one has to change one’s mindset. With David in Ek Aur Ek Gyarah, we couldn’t do anything subtle, it had to be in-your-face and upfront. For Kamal Haasan’s psychological thriller Abhay, it had to be bizarre.
Shankar : Basically, we don’t believe in putting up a show for producers or directors, whether big or small. Whether it’s Subhash Ghai, Karan Johar or a small-time producer, they trust that we are working towards the betterment of their films.
Ehsaan : We are working with Aditya Chopra and Shaad Ali for their new films and they’ve adjusted to us. Our composing sessions are not the sitting sessions they are used to. But they are enjoying themselves. We go straight into the studio, start feeding ideas into the computer and then get a song. Sometimes we go out of town, like we did for Kal Ho Naa Ho and Dil Chahta Hai.
