Though he has been around awhile giving occasional hits, after the tremendous hits from "Sooryavamsam", "Unnidaththil Ennaik Koduthaen", "Thullaatha Manamum Thullum" and the recent "Nee Varuvaai Ena", S.A.Rajkumar seems to have reached a favorable status in TFM. I would like to discuss his signature music.

SAR's music is very hummable. His Sandhams are easy to remember. He has stated in many interviews that MSV is his idol and I can see that somewhat in his compositions. Like his idol he resists music that drowns out the words. Has he done anything interesting musically as in blending unique ragams? Does he prefer certain ragams over others? I'm curious.

I hate this guy for his BGMs and the atrocious repetition of one song from each movie 'n' times to put the listener into boredom. In 'Unnidathil ennai koduthaen', the BGM is very kiddish for all the kindergarten comedy Karthik and Ramesh Khanna deliver. Poraadhadhukku Madhan Baab vera! For BGM, I feel, of the new comers, 'Bobby' who tuned for 'Sollaamaley' is quite appealing.
I think we tfm listeners consistently ignore the talented MD 'Balabarathi' who has tuned more than excellent music for 'Amaravathy', 'Thalai vasal' and probably 'Golmaal'.
If SAR has to stay, he better not repeat his tunes this often.
All IMHO.

Sivaranjani seems to be his favorite. He has used it in almost every movie - most of them were hits
paattu onnu naan paadattumaa
aanadham aanadham paadum
innisai paadi varum
vaanathu nilaveduthu (simma raasi)
lately his music is very predictable. Seems to be running out of ideas.

SAR has given a lot of really nice songs. Most of his songs are really good but they all sound similar. I think best was in his first film. The Sithaara starrer. "Gowrikku" was nice, and there were a couple of others.

SAR thread ? !!!! I don't how he impresses TFM listeners. All songs he composed were of that old dabba tune "Paathu onnu naan paadattuma".
He really irritates the listener by putting similar tunes in songs & the same song 4-5 times in one movie. Horrible !
I remember an interview of SAR. He told that For composing the song "Rosaappoo chinna Rosaappoo" He got 100 tunes the 101th tune is that Rosaappo. So, we can expect 100 tunes simlar to Rosaappoo in his upcoming movies.

I would call him TFM's nadeem-shravanan. His tunes are hummable, catchy but very repetitive. The first movie -chinna poove mella pesu is his best movie so far. Pudiya vasandham was also equally good. The one ( not just one, but most) irritating aspect in his music is playing the tune with different instruments thru. out the song. What I heard dwon from my folks in madras is, he is quite popular now, IMO, he is not deserved.

I think he is the MD for the film, Manasukkul mathappu which had the great SPB number, "Ooo, ponmankuyil singaramai" and Poonthendrale by KSC (solo) & by JC.
Apart from Chinna poove mella pesu song, I like sangeetha vaanil santhosha raagam song from the same film.
But, I feel very bad about him about the song, Megamai vanthu pogiren from Thullatha manamum thullum. Is he copied Deva or Deva copied him?
( as it is like salomia from Kannethire thondrinaal)
Thodu thodu nilave & irubathu kodi are good numbers from the same film.

yvs, both of them copied from sayonee by junoon:-)
SAR was accused of getting "inspiration" from kaNNaalanE in bombay for the song sollaamalE yaar paarththadhu..

SAR seems to emerge to popularity nowadays due to his following DeVa's footsteps. If you examine carefully,u can see that - he will take one melodius line from IR's eighties's hit and convert than into a hit song.
Eg :- Manikuyil isaikuthedi(is it Thangamanasukaran? not sure ) is converted into innisai paadi varum)
another eg :- Etho oru paatu from a song in Paattuku Naan adimai(title song ).

bb, According SAR, (he told this in an interview), both Kannalaney and sollamaley are based on Same Raaga. That's why it sound similar.
SAR did some good job in early eighties, like
Oru Ponnu Nenachaa, kunkuma Kodu...
In Oru Ponnu Nenachaa, Udhayamey Uyirey Nilavey..., in Kunkuma Kodu chinnanj chiru kiliyey.. are good numbers. In 90's he started repeating the same song many times!

SAR hasn't lived up to the creative interludes he showed in "Pudhu Vasandham" and "Chinna Poovae Mellap Paesu", of late his interludes have left a lot to be desired. But time and again he comes up with decent, hummable sandhams for songs. While this is not the only qualification for a good song, I truly miss the days of MSV,VK,Vijayabasker, and early IR when each song had a memorable sandham. While those days are gone, I find some consolation in S.A.Rajkumar, Bharatwaj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and select slow ones from Deva. Another reason I prefer memorable sandhams: they inspire the lyricist to come up with coherent sentences rather than throwing three word phrases for each line.

Sar music is like old style he copy a lot of Rajaa's tune and spanish tune. kuyil paatu pudichireka in nee varuvay enna is old song the song title is asaye kathale thuthe vitten he always remix rajaa's tune to new tune...

SAR seems to follow the generic music style thats popular in HFM.. where the songs are based on very similar tunes, with little variation between them, and using tune of one song as the interlude in a different song.. Trying to do a uttam singh in TFM ??:).

Dear folks,
There is a conspiracy going on by SAR. He is taking up Sivaranjani and making all sorts of combinations. Soon any song based in Sivaranjani will sound like a SAR song. After Sivaranjani SAR will continue his conspiracy with other ragaas and use up all (!!) of them so that no more raagas are left. Beware MD's.
- From: Sriram Lakshman (@ spider-tr043.proxy.aol.com)
on: Thu Oct 21 01:56:16 EDT 1999
Kamesh, I personally have no problems with his Sivaranjani fixation, after all every MD can be accused of having some raga or the other as his base raga, that is, something to fall back upon for a run of the mill sitatuation. MSV had Harikambhoji and its derivatives, Karaharapriya and its derivatives and some more, IR had Keeravani, MMGowlai, Mohanam, Kalyani, ARR has Kaapi as his favourite etc. The problem is SAR has not been able to present this much hackneyed raga differently. Sollamale.. song has its begenning lines in the same santham as KaNNaalane and hence the similarity. 'Aanantham Aanantham' sung by Unni Krishnan is actually a lift from an instrumental piece in Bobby (aksar koi ladki is haal mein), composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
His 'ponmaanguyil' is a superb melody. My favourite is 'Oorengum unnaitheduthe' sung by Malaysia Vasudevan. Don't know the name of the movie , but I am sure it is picturised on Raghuvaran.
