A place to discuss any interesting incidents that happened in TFM arena.
For example...
When Ilayaraja was recording his first song 'Machanai Paartheengala' for Annakili, suddenly there was a power cut which basically erased all his recordings.
Then somebody made a sarcastic comment that, 'Indha allu (ie IR) avvalavu dhaan. Aarambamey power cut...'
Despite of that IR became a leading MD and is a Maestro now. Like that any incidents...?

So many. This was told by Lakhsman of Lakhsman Sruthi orchestra in "Hari Giri Assembly" in Jaya TV. Lakhman once wanted to meet ARR. A friend of his, who was close to ARR, offered to take him to ARR. This mutual friend took with him an electronic keyboard. They met ARR, and this friend gave him (ARR) the keyboard and said there was some trouble, and he cudn't figure it out. ARR diss-assembled the unit in no time, and in five minutes pointed out technical snag. Lakshman recalls how dumbfounded he was at ARR's speed :-).
Another story recalled by Febi Mani, one of the main the harmony voices in ARR's team. In "Oh Maria" song in kadhalar dhinam, she was supposed to sing some 'harmony' hummings. But as she heard the "main" tune, she just hummed something (apart from what ARR wanted her to sing). She never knew ARR recorded even that, and when she heard the song, she was awestruck that that casual humming she did was actually used by ARR throughout the song at apt places (u know, even when the song starts, that 'na na na' bit, when a female voice says,"connecting, kadhal.com".)
MSV has discussed so many wonderful tit-bits about Kannadasan & Sivaji/MGR. Will continue later.

How can anyone forget the 'bab bab aa bab bab barey.. Pudhu Maapillaiku' song from Aboorva Sagodharargal. I remember Ilayaraja narrating how Kamal selected that tune for that song situation.
Initially IR composed some tunes for that situtation. But Kamal wasn't satisfied. So IR stopped for a while and asked him, 'What do u exactly want?'
Kamal replied by singing the MGR's song (ANBEY VAA I guess)
Naan Paarthadhiley,
Aval Oruthiyai thaan
Nalla Azhagi enbean
Nalla Azhagi enbean..'
and told that he wants something like that...
Then IR took a while and came out with this 'Pudhu Maapillaikku' tune. Kamal was astonished. That was the tune which he was expecting.
He asked IR, 'how come you were able to come out with this tune, which exactly matches what I was looking for..!'
With a smile IR replied, 'I didn't give you anything new...'
and he started singing 'Naan Paarthadhiley' in Pudhu Maapillaikku's tune.
Try singing Naan Paarthadhiley in the tune of Pudhu Maapillaikku...

This incident happened during the composing for "sindhu bhairavi".Raja after completing composing said to KB "Rombo velai vangeteenga National award vangidalama idhuku" , amazing he got national award for that movie. further on the recording day of "nanoru sindu" song chitra had to attend exam for her music degree, she told this to raja , raja said "adhe vide periya result idhule kedaikum" and chitra got her national award for that song

Isai rasigan, thanks for this ineresting thread
:-). (I was so sick of stupid threads lately.)Anyway, coming to the point, there are lovely stories with MSV, IR, et al. In some song, (i believe it is "yaarai nambi naan porandhen pongada ponga",) Kannadasan specifically wanted to use "pongada vangada" as he wanted to convey his dissatisfied mood to some political circle that gave him a raw deal. MSV said,"anne, idhu vendaam anne, vaada poda'nnu paattu ezhuthina vambaayidum". Kannadasan strictly replied,"idho paarunga, indha vari maaraama appadiye varanum. Maatharadha irundha vera yaaraiyaavadhu vachu ezhudhikkunga"...Finally Kannadasan won the arguement :-).So recalled MSV.
One interesting story abt IR. That day, the recording studio was getting ready for the songs for MUDHAL MARIYAADHAI. Bharathiraaja was waiting for IR at the studio doorsteps, very anxious on what tunes he wud get. IR arrived promptly, and Bharathiraaja immediately asked,"raaja, paattu readiyya?"..IR smiled and as he walked into the studio, said," Iruyya, ellam varumya.." (meaning,"wait my friend, it will come as u want"). Raja entered the recording theatre at 8.30AM, and by 2.30 that afternoon, IR completed composing all the songs for the MUDHALMARIYAADHAI. Bharathiraaja was more than happy for what he got at such an amazingly short time (of five hours). :-)

Another small cute story abt IR. In NETRU INDRU NAALAI, there is a scene for kallapetti singaram, where he just is jogging early morning. There is a manhole in the road cover for which has been deliberatly removed for Kallapetti Singaram to fall. But Kallapetti just has a narrow escape. IR composed a humourous BGM bit in flute. Bhagyaraj asked IR," sir, this is just a flute piece, it wud be nice to have a supporting rythm." ("sir, flute piece mattum dhaan irukku, rythm irundha nalla irukkum"). IR smiled and replied,"Kallapetti singaram odi vaaraadhai neenga paartheenga, avar boots sathathai neenga ketkala. Naan andha boots sathathukku matchinga dhaan flute piece panni irukken." (u saw kallapetti singaram jogging, but u didn't hear the noise his shoe was making. My flute piece will gel with his foot tapping sounds.). So much for attentiveness :-)

At least I know something about Roja cassette. The combined sales of the ROJA tamil and the Karoake version had actually exceeded the number of tape recorders in Tamil Nadu as per a media report published at that time.I thought that was interesting.

Srinivas had sung for the chorus in a film for ARR.
That was his 1st song. But to his disappointment his name didn't figure in the cassette.
When he told this to ARR, this is what ARR replied:
"the Roja CD didnt even mention MY NAME!!!"

This is my personal experience with raaja.
few years back a function was held to felicitate s.p.balasubramaniam who had compleated thirty yea rs of singing which was held in music acadamy in chennai.
Top people like kalainger, kamal participated and raaja spoke on that occasion.it was a very open, frank speach recalling all the fun they had in the begining.
Next day the company i was working wanted to clarify certain things with raaja. i was assigned for that.
so i contacted raaja's home through phone they said he left for the studio.
so i went to prasad studio there i met one mr subbiah assistent of raaja. i told him the matter he asked me to wait.
'konjam irunga sir lunchukku innaikku velila poraru appo meet panalam '
i waited.
around one thirty raaja came out.
but he didn't look at anyone he just started walking towards his car i ran behind him put his assistat pulled me.
'sir edho serious moodla porar ippa disturb pannatheenga nalaikku vanga' he said.
i was annoyed. i have spent almost two hours there.
i went back to office and called raaja's home. his wife picked the phone. u know in raaja's home servants don't pick up phones.only the family members.
'avar illaye thambi.nalu maniyagum.adhuvum veetukku varara illa studio porarannu, neenga edhukkum prasadukku panni assistant kitta pesunga' said raaja's wife.
at four i didn't call prasad i called his home. bavadarini picked up and said ' appa illaye vara aaru maniyagum'. i told her my requirement but she said ' adhallam appavukku than theriyum neenga 6 manikku call pannunga'
i called up at six. karthik picked and said 'appa is expected around eight o clock'.
' kalailarunthu try pannren pakkavum mudila pesavum mudila' i said.
'nan appa kitta solren.innaikku illana nalaikku studio vanthurunga' said karthik.
i made the call around 8.30pm.
bavadarini took the phone and said 'appavukku phone'. i understood raaja is at home.
a few seconds later a voice...
'sollunga'
it is RAAJA !!!!!!!!!1
i was speachless.
'enna vishayam?' raaja again.
i told him what i needed.
'adhu balu kitta irukkey. neenga baluva contact pannunga.'
'sari sir'
'appuram?'
i didn't know what to say.
'sir yatramozhi ketten romba nalla irunthathu'
the man who must have hered thousands of words like this. he said nothing.
'appo vera onnumillaye?'
'romba nanri sir'
'nanri'
it is only few seconds but i can never forget it.it is not every day u talk to maestro over the phone.
