Kalai- glad to see your post after a long time.
Reg. 'Deivathin Deivam'-1962, it was a KSG film and starred SSR, Vijayakumari, Geethanjali and others. I saw it long back in my village kottai and didn't like it much.
However, the songs were great. It was perhaps the only film of KSG's to have music by G Ramanathan and it was among the great GR's last films. The songs which stand out in memory are the classical 'Kannan mananilayai thangame thangam'-SJ, the haunting 'Nee illadha ulagathile nimmadhi illai'-PS, the fast paced, breezy 'En aaruyire nal vaanamudhe'-PBS-SJ, the slow and melodiuos 'Anname Sorname'-PS-SJ and 'Kannukkul eththanai vellamadi'-TMS.

dear kalai,
nice to see your mails again
nilaiyaga en nenjil is not in deivaththin deivam.
dear mr saravaran,
the theme of the film was not acceptable in those days (not every one will like even today) and therefore, the film was a failure.
but as you mentioned, all the songs are very good,
the best among is 'kannan mananilaiyai' - the camera work by karnan is very good in this song

This song is an immortal creation of AdinarayanRao. It has the unique distinction of having attained popularity in THREE languages - Tamil, telugu and Hindi. This is a raagamaalika...my very elemetary introduction to classical music tells me that the basic raaga is Sohoni (Hindustani) and then it switches to ???, Bageshri and lastly Yaman. In Tamil, the song is by PS and Ghantasala, in Telugu by Jikki and Ghantasala, in Hindi by Lata and Rafi. All 3 renditions are absolutely splendid.
AdinarayanRao was a wonderful Music director, and this is one of the best raagamaalikas ever created.

True an excellent song it is! Called as "Haayi haayiga aamani saage" in telugu and "Kuhu kuhu bole koyaliyaa" in hindi, it was a mega hit in both the languages. The song is set in four ragas Sohini (or hamsanandi), Bahar, Jaunpuri and Yaman sequentially. So you were right about the first and the last.

KAUMUDI
The same film had an excellent song by PS - "piluvakura" in telugu. the hindi version was sung by LM as "mujhhe na bula". Similarly, the telugu "nee nadalona" was "mausam suhana dil hai deewana aaja piyaa". Such gems, one and all!
what i want to know is this - the hindi version of the movie has a terrific classical duet by lata and sudha malhotra. it is a taraana in hindolam (malkauns) which is extremely vigorous. I havent found the tamil or telugu version. do u know about that? i am quite sure PS must have sung that. it would be nice to listen to this song by PS!

" Azhaikathe Ninaikethe " tel version is "Piluvakura ". I read somewhere that the raaga of this song is "hindolam" ...
How about the song " Ennai Pol pennallavo " from vanagamudi..?

AVR- Are you sure that 'Kuhu Kuhu' was by Lata and Rafi? I was thinking it was by Lata and Manna Dey.
Btw, AVR and Kaumudi, why have you both all but disappeared from the VJ thread? We are missing you!
- From: a.v. (@ 132.216.66.81)
on: Sun Sep 29 10:57:23 EDT 2002
no saravanan - it was surely Mohammed Rafi. Manna Dey had a comparatively non-descript duet with Lata in this film.
Kalai - you had earlier mentioned about one film in the 80s with an astounding 32 classical songs by PS. Can you tell us about it, again?
- From: Subbu (@ 216.52.49.5)
on: Mon Sep 30 00:06:48 EDT 2002
AV, it was with 22 songs (some are small slokas also).. It came out in Tamil, Hindi. I don't know abt other languages. MD was L. Subramaniam and the only singer is PS. The hindi film name is Kaam Kala Thandav.. acted by Mohan Sharma and Deepa... with lots of "devotional" scenes :-)
But the songs are terrific... Tecah one depicts an emotion... One of them was on the grief of separation which is leading to frustration. PS goes to so high in the song and the music was fascinating...

bb:
Yes, I have also wondered what 'thEsulAvudhE' means.
'ulAvudhE' is clear! But what is 'thEsu'?
Probably 'thEsu' means 'goodness'. In navamaNi
mAlai of dhEsika prabandham there is a verse
which goes as
thEsu oththAr illaiyenum dheiva nAyaganAr
probably meaning there is no one equal in goodness
to the divine Lord.
I hope some Thamizh expert can help us with the
actual meaning of 'thEsu'.

Friends,
>>>>what does "thEsulAvudhE" mean?<<<<
My guess is 'thEsu' is the Tamil version of Sanskrit 'tEjas'! It perhaps denotes the 'oLi' on the face of the Full Moon!

Kalai
Kuhu kuhu song is definitely by Rafi, I have no second thoughts about that.
AVR
There is probably no equivalent of the malkhauns taraana in telugu. I don't remember any classical duet like that. But then I might be wrong. Is there any site on the web where I can listen to that taraana you mentioned? Then probably I can remember something.
Saravanan
I haven't disappeared from the VJ thread. Since most of the stuff is about her tamil songs etc, I learn rather than opine about issues. And I will participate when I get an opportunity. But please continue your essay. It has been very enjoyable and informative so far. I keep reading it regularly. Thanks for asking though.

Songs in KK by PS:
1. manam padaithen
2. solla solla
3. thiruparankundrathil
4. kuravanji paadal for vaLLi (JJ)
what else Kalai?
Somehow i vote for that endrum inikkum "Solla solla inikkudhada muruga..". There is no match for that song.. enna oru theLivu andha paadalil?

Subbu,
The kuRavanji paadal in Kanthan KaruNai for JJ is:
'kuRinjiyilE, poomalarnthu, kulunguthadee thannaalE'(or thannaanE!)
'thirupparankundRaththil..' was already getting popular as a non-film devotional by Soolamangalam sisters with Kunnakkudi's music! AL Srinivasan liked it very much and requested Kunnakkudi (as well as the MD of the film KVM) and got it introduced as a song by VaLLi and Deivaanai! Such excellent understanding those two MD's had!
