Naaz...a very honest review, I should admit. One of the parts that I liked was the authentic early 80s feel given to the Simran-Madhavan courtship.

Aalavandhan, do you check out other IR threads where ARR fans buzz around making unwarranted comments and comparisons?
I am not supporting them but you must admit that ARR threads are relatively more shittier as the orgical few inside there have a tendency to compare to IR & put him down.
Your advise in those threads would certainly help.

Good one Naaz! But writing a film review after 6 months of its release has its advantages!!
But presenting it nicely and a new dimension analysis is a tough task and you have managed that.
I felt that "Vidai Kodu engal nade" picturisation should have given the pains of the journey to the prmoised land (With No Moses this time). But the song gets a casual mention.
Sujatha s "Oru Laksham puthangangal" too gets a casual mention when that small story has a lots to tell about the struggle.
Madhavan-simaran love affair,Sundari song picturisation -the breadwinner stuff from Mani s Kadhai Ilaka!

OISG -
Thanks you for those appreciative words.
In all honesty, I did not know what Kannaththil Muththamitaal was about (except for the fact that it was by MR and the score was by ARR) and I wanted it to stay that way. I did not read the PR blurb in the festival guide, nor did I browse any other reviews (by other journalists) to get a sense of what I was in for. I took WN's recommendation to heart, and just went. When the film opened with Nandita Das (that was another surprise) I thought for a moment I was at the wrong venue!
Those were the only advantages I had. I know now that the film is dated (by indian cinema terms) and writing about it might seem a bit like oh-but-the-caravan-has-moved-on-to-other-locales, so why bother...But the longer (published) piece will also include an analysis of MRs film(i) grammar and it will be more of a critique/evaluation than just a "review."
Any additional info/comments you and your friends from this thread (or the constellation) might like to share (including ARRs work/collaboration with MR) will, I am sure, add to my perspective in final version. You can do so here, or can email me at naaz99@yahoo.com
Thanks again.

I laugh loudly when I read that R & R type songs, jaaz songs are nothing new and so KV is nothing new in TFM. Can you apply the same logic to IR album. When Ivan came every IR fans (only them) were talking high about the carnatic numbers which were just ordinary. Haven't we had lakhs of movies in carnatic music and carnatic songs. Then why did you people say so much about the SR's song in the film.
You have one logic but you apply a diffderent one to us.. Good that this time you stomach is really burning. Don't worry, I will not start spoiling IR's thread for now. Better stop spoiling this thread if your intention is to do so. Tit for a tat ...don't forget...I am not alone.
If you don't like the album, say it and stop there. Your character will determine your consequence."

Bark all you want. It makes sane ppl even happier knowing that your deep felt unhappiness & disatisfaction that u're thiriyiranning with :))
Wat could it be? Unhappy with the quality of music its getting from whoever? Or disatisfaction with ppl listening to IR's music?
Poor soul.

Hi friendz,
Did any of u see The Legend of Bhagat Singh on ZEE yesterday night? The movie was very good and realistic. It is a pity that it did not run well. On top of everything, of caourse, was our man's music. The BGM was smashing to say the least. I guess ARR is the best MD for patriotic scores. All the songs were good. It is part of folklore that ARR refused to hear the Bhagat Singh songs first - the stuff composed in the first Bhagat singh movie and wanted to give tunes on his own.
The result is for everyone to see. Three songs shud go down as some of the best ever - Des mere, The love song (soothing and meldious) and the best of them all, Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna. The slowere version, well rendered by Sonu Nigam and Hariharan, makes ur hairs stand on end. The santoor and sitar interludes in the middle and the violin pieces in the end are simply superb. TLOBS is my nomination for the National Award!!!!!!

ARR is extremely good in situational stuff. A case to point would be songs from Iruvar movie.
Unfortunately, he has not chosen to show much importance on BGM. Otherwise I am sure that with his musical sense, he would do a splendid job in that too.

WhyNot, Why not doing a better job than watching that stupid movie? i don't feel even the visuals were nice for the songs. i believe u must be having KD songs in cassette/CD listen to that. For rahman sake if u watch such movies then u would become rahaman hater :-)
