Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

That is amazing. She must have sounded so native in those languages. It is not easy to be universally accepted.
A nice duet from Vani - "Chendumalli poo poal azhagiya pandhu". I think the movie is "Oh Manju".

"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal" from "Apoorvaragangal" was an excellent song.It won a national award is it?The song "Thiru Murugan Arikinile Vallikurathy" was a very popular song in mid seventees. Vani Jayaran has sung good songs in various languages. She would have broken through in Hindi as well, but at the time she started, the contemporary singers in Hindi played diffrent ways to push any south Indian singer from the Hindi scene. Things are diffrent today. With the entry of ARR, many south indian singers have begun to survive well in the Bollywood Music Scene.

How can one forget "Maanasa sanchara re..." from Sankarabharanam, Muthamiazhil paadavanden (mel naattu marumagal), Naathamenum Kovililey(Classical beauty from her...) , Ilakkanam Maarutho(Beautiful duet...), Niththam niththam nellu choru(Rusty village song...).
Luckily she is not singing now. Otherwise they might have asked her to sing songs like "Eppadi eppadi, pullai peththathu eppadi...(Like the one by SJ)

AG Kutty,
True, ARR has paved the way for singers from the South. but, has the media recognised any one of them at all?
After a successful Rangeela, where Hai Rama was a big hit number, and songs from Hindustani (Indian) how many people know Swarnalatha?
Her Hindi diction was perfect.
How many know Sujata, Srinivas or even Chitra, who has sung for the Anand Milinds and the Anu Maliks too.
ARR's concert in Malaysia was beamed on Sony TV on a couple of occasions with a major publicity campaign. Almost all leading TFM artists performed Hindi numbers on stage. But what happened?
There's somethin basically wrong with their (Hindi Film Industry) mindset. When a one-song wonder in an obscure film or album becomes a media favorite and gets splashed all over the TV, magazines and of course the Web, and singns on the dotted line for all music composers, little is done to bring these established talents to the audience..
Here's my advice to all you Sujatas, Swarnalatas, Minminis and Srinivas:
Well, for one, you should get your PR in place and become a little more media-savvy, an art ARR is learning to perfect(but he's too naive and 'straight' for all that. It's nice to note that Lady Luck is on his side though.)
Coming back to you, you guys should talk in a mix to Hindi and English, with a few Urdu phrases thrown in... Tell them about your 'favorite' MDs, like Shankar Jaikishen Saheb and 'PanchamDa' (Don't ever say R D Burman... you are finished) and how you have grown up with the music of your idols. Of course they ought to be Lataji, Ashaji and Kishoreda [You'll get lotrs of frowns if you say Rafi, since according to popular belief, Kishore Kumar is way over him].
Your favorite musicians are Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Kishori Amonkar, not MS Subbulakshmi or Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna (See, how difficult it is to pronounce these hardcore Madrasi names???
Your favorite raags (not Raga) are Malkauns (not Hindolam), Yaman (not Kalyani) and Kafi (not Karaharapriya)! Don't talk about BGM. That's a real BAD word in their industry. And above all, don't even take the names of the Susheelas, MSVs and Raja Sirs. Worry not, these 'Madrasi' musicians won't mind you lying through your teeth to make a career UP THERE in the North!
All the best!

Vani's another beautiful duet with S.P.Balu is "Vaa Vaa Enn Veenaiyo" Starring Kamal and Madavi. I think the movie is SATTAM.

VJ has sung "Indraikku Yenindha" from "Vaidehi Kaathirundhaal"
I think, she is the singer of "Raadhaiyin Nenjame" a hindi-remake song
Did she get award for "Shankarabaranam"?
She is an excellent choice for ghazal like songs:
"megame megame", "Ennullil Engo"
She was used by Shankar-Ganesh for most of the hindi-remake songs ["Oru Paadal Naan Kaetten" from "Osai"]
She was given chances by Chandrabose
TRajendhar has given "Vasandham Padivara" in "Rayil Payanangalil"

Chidam, a few corrections: Radhaiyin nenjame was sung by Susheela and Vasandam Padivara by Janaki.
She did get an award for Sankarabaranam (Maanasa Sancharare). May be some day the new MDs will wake up and use Vani's talents. It is sad that she has sung only one song in almost 10 years.

Iam glad that still people do remember Vani.
Couple of months back I happened to see her interview in Good morning India- telecasted in one of the week end progs. in Winnipeg (Canada) where Vani sang a bhajan and her first Hindi song-Bolure papi. Even after so many years her voice sounded very sweet. Since the prog. was in Hindi she replied to all the questions in Hindi.
I think she is the only TFM singer to have performed in puri jaganath festival and also in puttaparthi. Many years ago she performed a full fledged hindustani concert in Madras.
Some of her songs-
Idayam thedinaal unidam- amara kaviyam,
nee kettal naan matten yendra solven kanna-ilamai oonjaladugirathu,
vaa vaa pakkam vaa-thanga magan,
kavidhai kelungal.
I have read some where that she was one of the few singers greatly appreciated by naushad (old Hindi music director). She had even sung for teh film pakeezah (which had 3 music directors, including naushad) but unfortunately vani's song didn't make it to teh film but was released separately.

May be some day we will see her on Hindustani/Carnatic stage if not in TFM.
A nice solo by Vani that is very rarely heard: "Chandira pirai paarthen thozhi" from the movie "Kizhakkum Merkkum Sandhikkinrana".

That song from Savithri is a very nice song.
Couple of other great songs by Vani
- Thottilil thodangum thaalaattu from the movie "Kanney kaniyamudhe"
- "Maan kanden Maan kanden" from the movie "Raajarishi". If someone knows a site where this song is available please post it here. It is a lovely historical duet and I have not listened to it in over a decade.

Another good song of Vani-
Mangala kannagi kunguma nayagi-from Thaaliya salangaiya.
The song in a high pitch was effortlessly rendered by vani.

Dear VJ Fans,
There is also an excellent song by VJ from the movie "Dheerga Sumangali". The song goes like this
"Malligai En Mannan Mayangum
Ponnana Malar AllavO". MDed by MSV.
It is an excellent song. I think she got a National Award for it.
with regards
