Bollywood composer A R Rahman is to write the score for the West End
version of 'The Lord of the Rings'.
Rahman, who also wrote the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's
hit 'Bombay Dreams', has been commissioned to produce a raft of
original songs.
He will collaborate with Finnish folk group Varttina for the show,
which is due to open in spring 2005.
With a budget of £8m, the adaptation of J R R Tolkien's famous
trilogy is set to be the most expensive production ever staged in the
West End.
Rahman is a superstar in his native India and has sold more than
100m albums, composing the soundtracks to more than 50 Bollywood
films.
Producer Kevin Wallace said: "We are recreating Middle Earth and we
needed the music that goes with it to be unique.
"A R Rahman writes brilliant melodies with an exotic quality and we
know he will write something which audiences will adore."
Rahman will write some of the songs himself, Varttina will write
others, and they'll also co-write some numbers.
The premiere of the West End production is being timed to coincide
with the 50th anniversary of the publication of the complete Tolkien
trilogy: 'The Fellowship Of The Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The
Return Of The King'.

Thats really a great news. I would be more happy, if he comes up with his original scores instead of using his old tunes(not like BD).

IR with a Symphony in 1993 involving no one less than the legendary RPO went Global ahead of ARR and the (Manmohan Singh) Indian economy combined. But, it pleases me to say that ARR has made the idea popular for the new generation and even if it is less music and more noise, it is interesting to see this global participation in cultural understanding.
Keep it coming, Mr. Rahman. Hey Mr. Richard Corliss of Time loves Rahman' music, so it is upto ARR to work harder and do something racy and change that stupid Lord of the Rings bordom into an exciting show.
Hey, but i wonder everybody is capable of producing symphonies, so how will IR stand out (as usual), that is what i am curious about

I dont agree with you (my opinion).. coz LRR Tolkien is a genius, either as the book or his devoted fan Peter Jackson in the movie. If you call that a Boredom.. it will not sell 300$ for 26$ tkt on E-bay
I would like ARR to compose a good theme.. and good luck to him

I am excited and disappointed at the same time.
Excited because my fellow Thamizhan ARR is going places and is making a name for himself.
Disappointed because he is going to continue to ignore TFM.
oh well, I guess we had to lose him for the greater good of mankind. how noble of us!! he he

multi name: dont be disappointed. TamilCinema isn't challenging anymore, once the artist becomes a genius! This way, ARR's apetite gets to grow more & more and fans continue to get the best from an artist, irrespective of the language.

paran .. I think some westerners know enough about western music as well as tamil music to know ARR is a talented .. and mostly original composer. The obsession that Indians have with plagerism is alarmist and overexaggerated. Westerners also copy other westerners, but often change things enough to be original. IT'S NOT NEWS, and most of all .. it's good art. Yes, art includes stealing. David Bowie said he was "a tasteful theif". Andy Warhol copied images and painted on them. Rap music steals beats and loops. Stealing is a part of art making. It always has been.

this recognition for ARR is expected and not at all a surprise for me........well i really hope that Bollywood and this musical keeps ARR so busy that he need not come back to TFM..........TFM is pretty safe in the hands of HJ,YSR,VS......i dunt think TFM needs the gr8ness of ARR anymore......they can survive without ARR.......and anyway ARR will come once for a while to compose blockbusters like "Boys" and revive the industry whenever needed....

It is good a tamil fellow gets world recognition. I will be happy who so ever be that tamil fellow. Even if ARR leaves TFM, we are going to be the gainers. Yes. some fresh and new music director will come up. TFM always had high quality music director. I wish our brothers and sisters will get more and more winternational recognition.

Time and again, everyone claims music has no language barriers, if so, why are so many people complaining that ARR is leaving TFM???
Every artist grows over the time. How much he/she grows depends on the amount of talent they have and the amount of exposure they get.
ARR was composing for jingles before he took up to film music. Now will you complain that we are all not getting good ad jingles, so ARR must come and compose jingles again?? (which of course he did for the Airtel ad) As an artist ARR felt that composing to film music is a better thing and more challenging that jingles.
Today he is at a point where run of the mill tamil movies dont interest him anymore. Emphasis on the phrase 'run of the mill'. He is still doing taml movies which he feels do justice to his music.
So, be happy that he is growing and dont complain that he is leaving TFM...
