Favourite ragas of music directors

Hi !
I guess one of the favourite ragas of IR is
sindhubhairavi(Recent songs- Ram Ram,thavikkiraen,nilavu paatu).I guess u all agree with me.

  Kalyani,Pantuvarali,Kanada/Darbari Kanada and likes i think also are the mostly expoited ragams.

  I would agree with 'puruv' and say Ilayraja's favourite Raga is KEERAVANI...... The number of songs he has composed in this Raga is unbelievable. Yes, he also composed many in Mohanam, at 1 point in his career.
  
  I would say, for Vidhyasagar, his favourite is Dharbari Kanada.
  
  ARR has done some lovely Kafi numbers and also seems to like Keeravani. But he has done few songs in Pure Raga. I read somewhere that he likes Sahana and Desh a lot.
  
  Yuvan likes Reethigowla, I heard, but has not produced a song in that, although his Theenda Theenda follows a Reethigowla/Sri Ranjani pattern. He too has successfully utilised Keeravani.
  
  As for Karthik, he has used many Ragas, one of his best Pure Raga utilisations was 'Ragasiyamay' from Dum Dum Dum, in Malayamarutham.
  
  Other MD's like Deva seem to go for the Gaana Ragam, which tends to be SINDHUBAIRAVHI mainly.

  I would like to add that of all the MD's, Ilayaraja has used the biggest and most complex variety of Ragas - from the Rare to the Common in such a tremenduos variety of compositions. There is no doubt about his knowledge of Carnatic Music - it is awsome!

  Shwetha - yep, I think he's done a few more, not sure - but I think Oru Poovelythum Kavidhai is byBarathwaj, I think. He also did a song which had Hamsanadham in it, from the Prasanth and Laila movie, forgot the name, sung by Unni and Harini.

  IR has definitely charted into not widely known raagas like Rasikapriya, Kanakangi, Bhaavapriya , Ganamurthy etc. But he has been really prolific in Mohanam compositions. Mohana raagam madhuramaana raagam.Mayangador ippuviyil undo?

  How about we throw light on the favorite raagas of obscure MDs and MDs of yesteryear as well as those of current hit MDs?
  
  For instance, I think, now this is just a wild guess, that Devendran's favorite raaga is Hindolam, and Gangai Amaran's favorite is Gowrimanohari. Any other ideas?

  (MaragadaMani)Keeravani has scored lots of songs in Hindolam(or)Suddadhanyasi in many of his telugu films. Eg: Annamaiyaa etc.Strangely I have not heard any Keeravani from him. Most of the Keeravani(or)RishiVanis I have heard, are from IR.

  33. Thiru theril varum silayo (film Naan vaazha veipen)
  34. Naan oru pon oviyam kanden(film kannil theiyum kadaigal).
  I wish somebody comes up with a list of popular raagas like kalyani/sindubhairavi/Abheri composed by MSV/KVM . There must be many.

  mythila, isn't 'Thirutheril Varum Silaiyo' raagam Sooranandhini (Shankarabharanam minus the Madhyamam)?
  
  Also, another big one is Natabhairavi. I think about 1/3 of all film songs are in this raagam. It ranks high up with the likes of Sindhu Bhairavi, Keeravani, Sivaranjani, Madhyamavathi, Shankarabharanam, and Mohanam.

  Purv, please list out some songs with strong classical touch in Natabhairavi. Some of them which Iam aware of, BUT which are very light
  1. Maniye manikuyile from Naadodithenral
  2.Oru naal - Devathai

  Actually, I found from reading an article "Classical Ilayaraja" that though it receives much emphasis in WCM and TFM, there is actually a dearth of the usage of raagam Natabhairavi in Carnatic music.

  Can anyone verify whether IR's song in telugu movie anweshana which goes like "keeravaani keeravaani..." is based on Keeravani ragam? Thanks.
  
  Also, IR gave similar song in telugu movie Rudraveena (Unnal Mudhiyam Thambi), which goes like "lalita priya kamalam.." in which the heroine's name being lalita, IR based the song on lalita raagam. A classic touch from the maestro.

  Hey Jag.... yup that is Keeravani...and a perfect keeravani. I guess the movie was "paadum paravaigal" in tamil.
  
  Hey Purv... even carnatic music doesn't seem to have too many songs in Nata Bhairavi.... the most popular one being "sree valli devasena pathe" by Papanaasam Sivan

  (I hope I copied it correctly).
  It is true that Natabhairavi is not as popular as its deriatives-Bhairavi,Hindholam,Anandhabhairavi etc. Looks like it is gaining popularity. Also,it is considered to be a 'serious' raga .
  A cursory review of the link shows that Sindhubhairavi is IR's favorite. It has been popular in film music for a long time.
