I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

AVR - Ravi Shankar, Gulzar, Khalid Mohammed, Asha Kasbekar, The people of Chittorgarh, The organisers of the Meera Samaroh, The govt. of Madhya Pradesh, The Filmfare Awards jury, All the Bhakts, HMV,...
I guess, they are all from Tirunelveli jilla?
Moreover, the MD and the Director of the film had many options of other "northie" singers to choose from (besides LM and AB) who would have given an arm and a leg - and also their voice - to sing Meera's songs...wonder why the film-makers went south? Vani Jairam was already out of the Bombay singing scene by then, had already won her first national award for Aboorva Raagangal (1976) and was making more waves in the southern film music scene. They could have chosen a "native." - even a new "bhraj" singer from Mathura or Brindavan or... Point is: they chose her, she didn't approach them.
I think a touch of modesty wouldn't really hurt, do you?

AVR - Nothing you say "surprises or troubles" me anymore. I still find your interest/attachment for Tamizh music to be nothing short of a marvel :-)

"Can't localites who have studied the language for 10+ years and speak it everyday, not judge for themselves?"
I was only giving you a list of "localites" which began with Ravi Shankar...no more, no less.
Gulzar didn't go back to Suchitra Sen after Aandhi. He did not go back to Waheeda Rehman after Namkeen. He did not go back to Rekha after Ijaazat.
He did not go back to Uttam Kumar after Kitaab.
So, what's your point?
But Ravi Shankar did, so did Anand Shankar, so did Raghunath Seth, so did OP Nayyar...all composers of classical/semi-classical/Hindi film music...
I don't have a problem with those words you pointed out. But I am oh-so-south - what do I know? :-)

Oh u seem to be angry!
anyway we will never agree on this thing :) (And most northies wont agree with u either :-) also none of the composers have ever had a longstanding association with ur favourite singer...but they have had it with other non-lata-asha singers if u go through their discographies. VJs o/p quanititative OP with them is too miniscule..and then you quoted Naushad last time!)
Fine I have played the devil too much. Anyway...I had asked for pure Carnatic renditions from VJ. I love Carnatic music and I wish to hear VJs renditions of a pure Carnatic recital. That was what i asked for. If u know about it, or where the tape might exist, please tell me. No..i wont mind going even to the depths of the deepest ocean, if I know that a Vani Carnatic recital tape exists there.

BTw Naaz ... i shall play devil once again...if I tell you something from Gulzars interview recently on ZEE TV, you will.............................not want to accept that :)

Neel D,
I just heard the Angangale song. Yenna Bodhai, ammadiyo! Who is the male singer? PJC? Jolly Abraham?
A request: Would it be possible to load the "Jaage Ho Kahin Rain, Arey Haan " from the Holi album? That has a fine quality and I particularly like the swarsanchar in the second bit. Let me know if that might make it to the site...
thanks once again for all your efforts!

Oh no, AVR - I am not angry at all. I am just amazed at how easily you can dismiss someone of the stature of Pt. Ravi Shankar as not knowing northern languages...if he doesn't know Hindi - then oh jeez, my knowledge of the language is definitely non-existent!
I also like the way you avoided the the list of non-repeats by Gulzar I gave you...They were all terrible actors, so why would he go back to them again? I quoted Naushad only in the context of VJ having worked with some of the most legendary names in Hindi - which also included Naushad.
About singers/mds collaborating together and forming partnerships - a lot of it has to do with more than just interest/desire/and will to do so. Primarily, particularly in Bombay, most of the singing contracts are signed by singers and music companies/labels (HMV, EMI, Polydor etc.) These contracts are costly to break - (the recent "hi-profile" case in western pop music was the Mariah Carey/Sony debacle) It is also one way in which certain artistes retain a stronghold/monopoly in the market. Hence, while all good intentions maybe there, money, litigation and manipulation play a bigger behind-the-scenes role. So it's not just about talent, ability, enthusiasm and availability. To think so would be more than somewhat naive.
Secondly, some artistes prefer not to get involved in such cut-throat environments and are happy to take their act elsewhere, someplace where they can sing, without compromising their integrity. That is the choice of the singer/composer.
I doubt if VJ has given a full-scale Carnatic/Hindustani concert. I know this though:
Her Carnatic guru was: Sri Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar; and her Hindustani guru was Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. Her first assignment in Marathi was for a stage play for which the music was scored by Vasant Desai.
No don't tell me what Gulzar said. I know I won't accept it. And I won't tell you what Pt. Abisheki said. As I know you won't accept it. :-)

Vani jayaram was a good singer no doubt but does it warrant such a long running topic. may be the intention is to get into the guiness. then all the best go ahead.

Balaji - If you liked the song from Haisiyat, you should also listen to the VJ solo "Mere Sajna Sang Sang Mujhe Tum Rakhna" from the film Wafadaar. The music for that film was also by Bhappi Lahiri (same as Haisiyat) and the film starred Vijeta Pandit and Rajanikanth!
I don't know if it is available on the net...but I could check for a link and post it if it is there.

Yes u are definitely angry. I cant understand why u have to argue at such a personal level with anyone who disagrees with u to the slightest extent. And then there have been so many things where we see eye to eye, so much so that u are willing to tell me, so many things via email, and u show so much trust in me.
But I form opinions from whatever I listen. And then I have given valid counter-arguments. I have never ever formed them based on reviews. Even JA hasnt worked all that much with VJ as much as with so many other singers. His disciple-community is HUGE and I neednt tell u that.
Yes, i do know the names of her Gurus, but I want to listen to her tapes of those for one reason. You know I like pure Carnatic music. I did not mean to be sarcastic.
On similar lines, I am also surprised how u can dismiss the judgements of Ilayaraja...the person who knowledge of music has surpassed that of many classical musicians. And yet u challenge his choices etc! (if Ilayaraja isnt beyond criticism, why should RS be?)
Yes sure I musnt tell u what Gulzar said :) BTW I know that bit about JA u said...but then I have read his interviews too.
Is a whole clan of Northies and Northern MDs so prejudiced when it comes to their own language? Since we are never gonna agree, its time we left this there itself.
Ditto about Marathi too.

And one more thing - u dont need to take my word for this one. I had heard "mere to goridhar gopal" 8-10 years ago. At that time, i didnt know the name of the singer or the MD, but I did find it a bit non-native at that time.
so then u cant call it my "anti-south bias", can u?

AVR - Why do you say I am angry - when I am only trying to address all the concerns you have raised in your posts? Would you rather I didn't??
And what's more - I don't play the "devil." I just share the facts/info. I know. Have I insulted you by calling you names in the above posts? I have only offered replies - all to statements you have made - first. And where's the "personal" level - have I said anything about you or your family, your language, your intentions? Where do you read the "personal" here?
That's a baseless accusation, and you know it.
Also, please check other threads of PS, SJ, SPB etc. to see for yourself my repeated validations of IRs genius and brilliance. If you think you know enough about music, the music industry, and Pt. Ravi Shankar's (or anybody else's for that matter,) drawbacks in composition and language inadequacies - by all means go ahead and say it. Why should I object? I can only learn from your observations.
Vani Jairam is not my "favorite" singer. She is one
among the few singers I admire. If this were a Suman Kalyanpur thread, or a Kishori Amonkar thread, or a Parveen Sultana thread, or a Mohd. Rafi thread - I would share my thoughts about them as well. Without reservations. But it isn't. It is a VJ thread. Hence, a celebration of VJ.
I guess it is about time the others here stepped in. They can read both our posts and decide for themselves where the prejudice is.

Ok kids,AVR & Naaz, step back end of the round. Go back to your corners towel yourselves & come back & resume your debate. No hitting below the belt. opinions will differ but a person should not be opinionated. ( puiyutha?)
