Music stalwart fans like Srikanth, Srinath, Sankar, etc. maybe knowledgeable of when IR's 800th movie is going to be released. Also, we can appreciate from these gentlemen what MSV's and IR's landmark achievements have been and are going to be. Like they worked together in how many films? How many songs IR composed max in one day? Which songs were dramatic to compose? What surprises they experienced? What did they miss? Where do they compose? I know IR does in Prasad studios, what about for MSV? When is IR's new studio going to be launched?

Good topic. Hope fellow DFers will share some titbits about these giants.
To the best of my knowledge they composed only three movies together, "Mella thiranthu kadhavu","Senthamiz paattu" and "Senthamizh selvan".
MSV threw open the scope of TFM and took it out of the Carnatic Nadai adopted by SVV and GR. For the first time in TFM you had a complete shift in composing style based on the mood of the movie and situation. Examples that spring to mind immediately are "yaar antha nilavu", 'engirunthaalum vaazhga" and all songs in "Venniraadai" and puthiya paravai. He and TKR together implemented elaborate music arrangement for the first time in TFM so obvious in "Kann pona pokkile" , "Vannakkili sonna mozhi" ,"Kalyana naal paarka" and later in the 70's "Chella kiligalaam", "Ellorum nalam Vaazha". This I feel was one of his landmarks. He never compromised on melody though and his melody creations are one of the best you could ever hope to hear.
His music started sounding jaded and lacked the usual freshness when the quality of movies dished out plummetted.Scoring music for similar themes with MGR's political stature on the rise, I am sure affected his range and variety.
That was the time IR happened and any despondence with regards to the quality of music was wiped out. Lilting melodies with a fresh feel like "oru vanavil pole" , "Kuyile kavikkuyile", "Thirutheril varum silayo" were created. I guess the interlude music and re-recording in his time, became more pronounced than ever before. This certainly is one of his landmarks. One could see a layman appreciating these facets of FM composition. You could create new tunes using his interludes alone. Western Classical gurus tell me that he pioneered the introduction of the Western classical feel. Notably, I felt the interludes in "Poove sempoove","Poongatru" belonged to this genre of music, another landmark. This is all to be very concise.

IR is known for his speed in completing the re-recording for a movie. The movie Mudhal MariyAdai is known for it's great BGM. IR completed the BGM in a record 3 days!!
In one of the interviews BR told, that he wasn't very much impressed about the scene where the flutist comes to know of ranjni's death and comes running while they show the flute rolling down.
Once the BGM was recorded, it seems he was completely satisfied with the scene and was sure it wud create an impact.

In the MSV era, songs used to have the same interludes after the stanzas.IR is the one who changed the trend.99% of his songs won't repeat the same interlude.
IMO, Raja made dappanguthu songs more popular.Of course, MSV does have a few songs to his credits. But, nothing like E AthA athoramA variya, podhuvAga emmanasu thangam or Adiye manam nillunA nikkAdhadi.

Shankar,
99% of his (IR) songs won't repeat the same interlude.
Yeah, I agree. That was one of the specialities of IR. Earlier, it was quite common for MDs to repeat the interlude in the songs. I used to get the feeling that most of the interludes were merely used as fillers between two stanzas, until IR's songs burst forth into the scene.
Interestingly, IR also repeated the interludes for two songs (that I know of) - one is VandhAL vandhAL rAjakumAri from Oru oorla..., and the other one is a dabba song from "NAdOdi pAttukkAran" - there is a disco type song featuring Karthik, Mohini.
So, that's hardly anything compared to the several thousand other songs of IR.

Viswa,
Remember that fantastic guitar piece in "sing a song rappappo" from vaLLi??? That's repeated in after second stanza also

Yeah, right. And also the song "nEthu orutharu oruthara pArthOm". It has the same tune that keeps coming in the song.

Hi,
Raja's Rerecording:
I watched 'Amistad' last week end, the movie has a RR score in which human voices chorus are used by J.Williams. This tune reminds me or haunts me of Mudal Maruyadhai - "Adi nee thana antha
kuil".
Simlary for Titanic - "Velai pura ondru " come to my small brain!...I dont know why? when Ever I hear the flute piece - i get this song to flow.
in fact when I play the flute piece I end up playing "namdhu kathai" lines on the key board.
I call it Raja's effect.

An example of MSV repeating interludes was in "Aatho antha paravai pola" from Aayrithil Oruvan.Incidentally that song had 3 interludes and and all of them were the same.Just curious to know, was it a lack of imagination or time constraint. It was a nice piece of melody with full scale orchestration and the song had the scope for improvization from a creative standpoint.Guess MSV can reflect better.
Infact MSV did repeat a lot of interludes but this song stands out with 3 repeating interludes.
I guess most of us in the forum have'nt realized the importance of chords and what that can do to a song.If U listen to "Sorgame endralum" ,the chord changes are so heavy that it really forms the backbone for that song apart from its thumping rythym.
I would say Raja's greatest contribution is chord progression and heavy bass flow. Its tough for a layman to understand the naunces as we get carried away by the melody.A closer listening to each of the interludes and the intro
will throw a lot of insight to the composition.

MSV mainly relied on the melody of his tunes to get his songs across. orchestration, BGM and interlude music all these things gained importance after the advent of raja. he was the first MD to make people listen to songs just for the sake of interlude music alone.

In one year IR composed music for 56 films. That is more than one movie per week. All the songs were hits. That is the mastery of the maestro.
Just listened to Adutha Varisu. The somg "kaviriye kavikuyile " is an amazing song. From Rettai vaal Kuruvi people feel "Raaja Raaja soyan is the best. But to my knowledge "kaanan vandhu padugindran is just amazing. The sax or trumpets (please help me) in this is just out of the world. The violin following after the line "maalai nila" is tremendous.
I also saw the song "Netru Indha neram" from tik tik tik. MTV should really take tips from the picturization of this song. IR takes the song to new heights.
Thanks

veera akkor,
u should have seen 'idhu oru nilak kaalam' from tik tik tik. MTV would totally pale in comparison
to the picturisation. bharathiraaja the so called village director has given some of the most sophisticated videos whenever he had taken city based films.
as for the song it is an amazing fusion and SJ simply freaks out!

I get very excited whenever i talk abt Songs like
ithu oru nila kaalam.. Amazing orchestration and
supoerb rendering by SJ.. I don't think anyone even today can sing that song better than SJ did.
Why can't BR and IR forget abt their differences and give us songs like Tik Tik Tik..
Imagine the same SJ singing " Raasavee.Unna nambi " in muthal mariyathai... a diametrically oppsite style.. Totally rustic and is equally good.
SJ SJ thaan .. IR is the one to bring out the best in SJ.. At the same time, but for SJ, lot of IR songs would look pale.. ( even the the Devadhai song "Oru Naal" .. just a year back ..) AMazing !!

Idhu Oru Nila Kaalam also has lyrics that perfectly complement the tone of the song !
"Kannadi, Unnai Kandu Kangal Koosum !
Vaanavillum, Nagachayam Vandhu Poosum !
Paruva pookal, puruvam asaithaal bhoomi sutraathu !"
Very imaginative, I must say !
Vijay:
I would be happier if BR chose MTV models for future songs like this ;-), if we are fortunate to hear any.

digression:
srinath,
i have madhavi, radha and swapna in attractive outfits in that song, what more do i need! these sensual females are much better than those artificial looking MTV models!!
in the second interlude of that song u have a fantastic percussion rhythm for which a massage scene has been beautifully picturised.
what a fit! that scene would surely have made many sleepless!!! really creative thinking by BR!!!
also IR gave very good songs and BGM for the other thriller sigappu rojaakal. the thriller trilogy of BR with kamal comprising of sivappu rojaakal, tik tik tik and oru kaidhiyin diary are all visual treats.
srinath, u can add these to u'r list of musical videos.

The Fan : Is the songs "Idhu oru nilA kAlam" from Tik^3 ?? It has fantastic interludes. 1st interlude has a soothing flute piece followed by a classical Alapana with jazz style guitar. The whole effect is very suspenseful and breath-taking.
