Harris Jayaraj- Heir to Rahman ?

Harris Jayaraj is clearly the most popular music director in Tamil cinema today. He has virtually taken over the throne abdicated by A.R.Rahman who is now more interested in going international especially after the success of his Chinese film Warriors Of Heaven And Earth.
It is advantage Harris as his competitors; Vidyasagar, Bharadwaj and Yuvan Shankar Raja could not match his output of youth music. In the last one year his albums like Saamy, Lesa Lesa, Kaakha Kaakha, and this year's Kovil sold more than any other music director.
What sells today is peppy, foot-tapping songs and when Minnale was recently re-telecast on Raj TV, the TRP was impressive as the audience lapped up the songs and background score. Harris is today able to sell a film on his own, which only A.R.Rahman and Ilayaraaja could do in their hay days.
Harris is the clear winner as Rahman’s biggest source of strength and support, director Shankar has switched over to him with his new film Anniyan. But Harris has to watch out as he is becoming repetitive. The song “Kokku Meene Thinnuma…” in Kovil was nothing but a rehash of his own ”Kalyanam Than Pannikittu Odipolama…” from Saamy!

HJ has his own charm. He has composed some really good songs in TFM. Vaseegara, Mudar kanave, Uyirin Uyire are examples of his creativity.The problem however is that you feel that he is already sounding repetitive so the question of him reaching the heights that ARR reached is not there. I do not know if there is anything in HJ music that sets him apart...since he more or less seems to trying what ARR does. so he might come with a few surprises now and then but will still be considered as an ARR clone. We can draw parallels between deva and HJ since the former was called a IR clone.
one thing that needs to be noted is HJ teaming up with Shankar. Working in a big director movie might make u popular beyond tamil land and this might become HJ big turning point. I wish YSR gets a sinilar chance since he has a lot of raw music energy which a big dir can harness...

The problem with Harris is that he converts bgms into songs....:) not saying ARR hasnt done that...but in his 11 year career ARR has done it once. But Harris has already done it 3-4 times...
plus a lot of his songs are re hashes of ARR's songs....
but well when directors/producers can get the "Rahman Effect" cheaper and faster, why wont they go for HJ?
One thing i really dont understand is that ARR makes it clear that its gonna take awhile to compose bcos of his international commitments, ppl still go to him and bitch behind his back. Well anywayi have a strong feeling that Shankar is gonna stay with ARR, inspite of all the media frenzy

Mumbai: Chinese director He Ping was so enthralled and spellbound by A R Rahman's music in Amir Khan's 2001 blockbuster 'Lagaan' that he decided to sign the Indian music composer for his film 'Warriors of Heavan and Earth'.
In an e-mail interview with UNI, Mr Ping said Rahman was his first choice. ''I watched 'Lagaan' and was captured by the music of the film, so I immediately knew that Rahman would be perfect choice for this project,'' he said.
The film was an official entry for the Oscars but failed to make it to the final five in the Foreign Language Film category.
'Warriors of Heaven and Earth' was screened as opening film at Sixth Mumbai Academy of Moving Images (MAMI) Film Festival and was also shown at the Second Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) last year.
The film-maker said, ''Rahman is a joy to work with. He is a man with abundant talent and creativity and yet he is virtuously humble, patient and respectful.'' Asked whether there were differences between the two, he said that there were differences of opinion while working on the score, but it was all worked out very amicably and professionally. The Indian composer had delivered one of the best original soundtracks for the film and he was happy with it, he added.
Ping said that he would love to work with Rahman again for his next venture. In fact he was looking forward to it.
About casting Indian actors in his future projects, Ping said he was not really familiar with Indian cinema and its actors so he would first visit India and then decide. He said he had not seen any Bollywood movie except 'Lagaan', but is looking forward to watch more Indian films.
He agreed that Chinese cinema has definitely got a boost after 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' but insisted that his film 'Warriors...' was very different from the former.
While denying the charge that Chinese cinema was imitating Hollywood, he said the cinema had certainly strived to bring out more of the Chinese culture.
When asked about the USP of film, he said the best thing about it was the ''triumph of the human spirit''.

i was watchin saamurai the other day and the bgm for it is similair to sum of khaka khakas bgm. I feel HJ is good in spurts like minnale,12b,two songs of khaka khaka, a song in arasatchi and one in ullam ketkumae. But i feel he belong to the group of deva vs sirpi etc the ones who have hits now and again.nuthin original abt him.
YSR has a certain style abt him....but i dont feel he has sumthin that will change tfm like msv,ir & arr. so still waitin for sumone with a new sound. maybe praveen mani and i thought D Imman woulda been it after hearin Kadhale Swasam but then he came with duds afterwards.
YSR prolli woulda been a better choice for aniyan then HJ but YSR does have KS RAVIKUMARS ATHIREE which is a big project i think. so hes goin places.

I think it is just a campaign to try and bring HJ to the forefront of TFM by overhyping him. It is a well know fact that PKSaravana was the best audio released for Pongal and this was reflected in the sales.
HJ is having a bit of luck now that Fallen directors BR and Shankar have gone to him. This does not mean he is in any way a great MD. Everybody knows this, his songs have mostly been rehashes of old ARR tunes and now, he has resorted to rehashing his old tunes. He seems to have run out of creativity already.
