What an excellent effort by our Maestro! Songs and Re-recording are superb.
Especially violin concert by kamal in the blind school. It starts with violin and sitar combination in carnatic then mirudhangam and tabela got added, then it gets mixed up with Synth and Bass Guitar and goes to western classical, finally all ends up in carnatic music again.
This movie came 20 years back(1981). Now only I am realizing the truth of Raaja's pondicheri speech recently, stating that "I have wasted 25 years doing music in cinema". If he would have set his career in the right direction long time back, by this this time he would have desperate set of fans for his music all over the world.

Vijay,
Looks like you want everyone to discuss only about ARR's music which has become a rarity anyway in tfm currently.

Athi,
Vijay didn't mention ARR's name any where. Why do you perceive like that.
As IR fan, I myself feel this thread is waste. Already there are plenty of thread to discuss and share the joy of listening to IR music.

Vijay could have told the same thing in some other thread. He might have done intentionally. But you tell from heart. Is it necessary to start a new thread?

The article says 'kamal is potrayed as a violinist but not shown performing anything of that sorts'. The modernconerto could have been the answer for that but, i think (vaguely remember), the performance of 'modernconcerto' will be abruptly stopped in the middle(or even before that), in the picture. It is because madhavi will clap and spoil the recording(as per the story lineup).
However, the vimarsanam doesn't talk about the music of the film at all (neither +ve nor -ve). I believe the film was a "technically futuristic(!)" attempt in music; camera; etc, in an era where only strong stories were ruling and were the concern of the thirai vimarsahargaL. I can quote an example of it -appa yeppodhu oorukku kiLambi tholaippar yendru maadhavi kurukkum nedukkumaaga alaivadhum is pointed out as just rombha real. Any reader will think it only as a good screenplay(or story) aspect. But actually, in the movie, it is more than that. The camera had done a splendid job. In that very scene madhavi will be kurukkum nedukkumaai alanji-fied in normal speed. In the same frame her father's and other's activities will be shown in slow motion. This is to depict the mind of madhavi very clearly. Its not over here. The BGM is also very apt for that. A single theme musical piece will be played with one set of instruments in slow motion and other set of instruments in normal-fast motion depicting other's and madhavi's gestures and mentality.
But nowadays the direction of vimarsanam has changed. Everyother vimarsanam is pointing the camera work in that shot of this film and the sound marvel done by the MD. If the vimarsanam of Raajapaarvai is sought now, then may be we could get a fair (+ve or -ve) vimarsanam about both Story and "technical" aspects Raajapaarvai.
This is IMHO
Vijay btw im not Vijay Venkatraman. J ;-))

addaaa ppaaavingallaaa..... there were 2 scenes one where Madhavi claps and spoils a good music and another the major hit piece (by Narasimhan) - Kamal playing for some blind school - both are very good Violin pieces..... and the review says "nothing to be said about violin".....
but other than that, its a pretty decent review about the movie

i think the modern concerto might have been snipped away-the movie was a flop and it was rpobably thought that the concerto piece was interfering with the speed.i remember waiting for ths concerto when it was broadcast on DD(sunday afternoon,in the good old days we were eagerly waiting for a tamil movie in the national award category so that, you know, we could see 2 tamil movies in one day!).i could not beleive it when i found taht this piece had been done away with.musiacal idiots.

This thread brings back all those wonderful memories. This movie was released amidst very high expectations. I still remember the day and the excitement and adrenalin rush while watching this movie.
I was in my fourth year of engineering and still remember the day when a friend of mine, a Kamal fan(atic) convinced me that the first show on the first day is worth a try for this movie. That Friday, we were in the hall with tickets for the morning show. If you are from Coimbatore, Shanthi theatre should ring a bell. As usual, the Kamal Fans Association had their representatives in hundreds, crazy college girls (kamal fans) and of course the “front-benchers” expecting some teasing Kamal dances….
Being an IR Fan, I was focused on the violin concert, songs and BGM. The start of the violin concert and the next two minutes had me mesmerized and spellbound. Later the song “Adhimazhai” came along with some stupendous camera shots. There is one portion of the song where Kamal does a sketch of the landscape shown on canvass that gradually transforms to the actual spot. Well, the song, sequences, everything was perfect. A perfect 10, I guess.
“Azhagae, azhagu” was another great song pushed to the very end of the movie, though bits and pieces played in the background. The movie was way ahead in terms of editing, screenplay and music. We walked out of the hall thinking that the movie would be a blockbuster hit. Hmm L.
The 80’s …man what an awesome IR era…

ok oldies, tell me one thing.
Given the hype and euphoria todays MDs create by making 2 3 hits in a year. How was the public/ media attn did IR get in those days?
I remember during late 80s there was good media attn for raja.

kk, one thing is very clear - media (which itself was very small compared to today's quantum) wasn't much for or against Raja in late 70's or early 80's, but PUBLIC definitely were! Cassette recording centres had their major role in the early 80's (with TDK cassettes & Panasonic mono/stereo players the rage). They had those LP's in display , incessantly playing the music of Maestro. Equally active were the buses & tea shops (about which I've written many times)
Raja was crowned by these pubilc in late 70's itself and he never needed big push by the media! Still I remember Kumudham publishing a feature by Sujatha on the violin concert (Kamal had a special screening for him), praises all the way with description a la DF'er:-)

kk,
You can get a proof to eden's statement by looking at the number of audio shops that still have IR in their board - some are changing their boards recently :-), They make it as a group photo of MDs, Singers etc.,
But IR was there in atleast 90% of the nameboards of these shops untill five or six years back ..... That tells you what kind of sales he was making ! No other MD has got such a huge response from public till date - eventhough the number of cassettes sold is very high thesedays !

two amazing hits raaja had were sakalakalavallavan and chunnathambi-I had to go to madras by bus during the daytime. From coimbatore to madras, there were so many places playing that new year song from SKV.chinnathamb-my goodness.everywhere it was povoma oorkolam.commercially, i think these were his 2 biggest hits in his career.

yaaro..... i remember 2 more films..... especially "Vaidhegi KaathirundhaaL" - wherever u go it was "Raasathi Unnai" only.... it should have been a huge break for Jayachandrian, but somehow it did not happen... and the other i remember is "Varusham 16" - it was "Pazha mudhir choolai" everywhere..... in fact if we think we will get more like this :-)
"Idhayam oru Koil" is another example
