I've not yet heard this album from Isaignani Ilayaraaja. What is it all about? Has he come out with a better one than How to name it or Nothing but wind?
Did anyone of you hear this album? Is it available in the US, and has it been released in India?

I would not compare it with HTNI or NBW bcos this is like soundtrack. but believe me its fantastic.
It is the soundtrack for this documentary called India 24-hours by Raghu Rai(a famous photographer) and the film takes u thru all parts of India and talks about the people ,wildlife.etc.
there are many small pieces in he album and there is this one part where he sings some 'jatis',its beautiful.the orchestration is amazing.
only raaja could do it.U must listen to it.
when i was in bombay i had to go and get it from
the company which has released the cassettes and CD.
i dont remember the name of the company now,but it was not available in the shops then.

It's a good album. The theme music is repeated nicely in all the 17 songs thru different insturments every time. I think one has to see the documentary to appreciate this fully. Unlike HTNI & NBW, IR had to do this as a BGM to a documentary and that explains why this is not as good as those two. I could find a couple of IR old tunes repeated in some places. "Ingae naan kandaen en kadhainayagi" from some Sivaji movie is one of them. Again , some songs end with a very brief and haunting piece of music making the listener to crave for more of that (the ending music piece in the 3rd song, for eg.). That is very typical of IR.

Listen to the seventh one inthe CD. It's mesmerising. I could
visualize the movie just listening to the music. This is good
example of what is meant by cultural representation and
justice by music. I don't listen to it that often. It sends me in
to a downer.

India24Hours is a fantatic album by Raja. Some
pieces here and there are out of the world. Listen
to the magical piece of flute at the end of song
# 11.

India 24 Hours is a great album.
You have to listen to HTNI, NBW and India 24 Hours consecutively to appreciate how much varitey IR has. No album is like the other.
As people before me had mentioned there are traces of his filmy tunes in India 24 Hours (one piece reminds me of mAsaRu ponnE varuga from thEvar magan) but the whole album is far from being a filmy-type album.
The way the theme music permeates the whole album is just superb. Many pieces start totally unrelated to the theme but end with with the theme music being introduced into the piece in some form !

Arularasa
i agree with you!! i avoid listening to it, 'cos, its totally pathetic and disturbing when i listen to i24!! Aspiration is one that haunts you!! The Mortal Coil has the unique IR touch of pathos!! In the entire stuff, expression of happiness is very momentary and IR jumps to pathos quickly. True, thats the state of affairs in India!! i can visualize kids playing in the waters, women running back from the busy metro trains homeward after a busy day of work, the last journey of a dead man, etc., etc., Can anyone else control, raise and lower the mood and mind in general within 50 minutes or so?. I believe no one knows about this musical beauty, back in India!! I u/s i24 has not been released in India!!!

Rajaraman/Sathiya Keerthi (thalaivar engkE? absconding!!)
There was serial on Prime12 some time before on Mondays at 7pm titled 'India 24 Hrs'. Has that got to do anything with the album? I had the misfortune of working till 6:30pm and returning home only by 8pm. Did you people see that serial?

Aravind,
No idea about the connection. I haven't
watched the serial too.
p.s. thalaivar PC ambel aayiduchaam. He'll
be back online from Monday.

Kumar,
In bangalore, did you try Saibaba cassette shop
in Mallswm 9th cross. I got it from there.
I didn't find the album exceptional. Instead of
packing in too many small pieces, IR could've
given 5-6 fully developed compositions.
The recording however is very good.

I think the seventh song
where the organ(or maybe something else) is used, is the pick . It reminds me of ' oru kili oru yugamaaha' from 'naadodi thendral ' . Superb One.
This album is another jewel in the crown for IR.
It is really something that one would listen and
cherish for an interminable period.

To Rajaraman :
I hope you remember that this is actually a BGM score for the film. In all probability the structure for the album was dictated by the film.

I liked "Aspiration" the most from INDIA 24 HOURS. But, the song "Entranced" and "Mortal Coil" really made me cry. The lingering flute when the Mortal Coil is nearly over reminds us of the only freeing yourself from the mortal coil makes you realize God. IR has given a lecture on philosophy and life without words.

Did any of you watch the India 24 hours on PBS?
It was shown sometime in Sept (?) in Maryland. The program was well made and the music was good though I didn't get a chance to listen to it after that. Watch out for the program if you are in US, it was well made too.

Hi Senthilkumar
I saw that CD in a shop in Bedok interchange. I spotted it quite accidentally sometime in May 97. The cover was red with a very bad photograph of IR. With the red background, IR with ungroomed beard was very frightening!!! :-) Since I do not have a CD player, I did not buy that. It costs S$16.
Moreover, there was a serial on Prime 12 on Mondays at 7 pm, titled India 24 Hrs. Do you know whether the album has any connection to this serial?

Hi, finally, I managed to get "India 24 Hours" CD and listened to the music IR has offered. My Initial Reaction was sheer disappointment. As I listened more and more, I begin to like the music but wouldn't yet classify it as "Out of the World" or such.
The fact that the music was the BGM for a TV documentary probably indicates that the music has to be heard in context( quite contrary to some BGM of IR which can be heard and enjoyed without the context! ).
MY expectation was probably way too high( as we always tend to expect from IR ) and should have approached it with an open mind. Sorry!
I hope to develop a taste for it as I listen more and hopefully, will start to like the music and enjoy.

Amar,
I also felt like u when i listened to that
first time. May be my expectations were also
too high. We had NBW in mind i guess.
U listen to that again and again. U will really
enjoy that. Though i also remembered some old
tunes, i could not say exactly which song is
similar. The theme music, First and Last are
different. The "Bhakthi" has the classical
touch. This is not an album like NBW or HTNI.
This is a BGM which is controlled by the Video
component also. May be people who have seen
both, might be able to tell us the feelings.
Any fortunate souls?

Finally got my India 24 hrs CD - It was good
except that more than 1 piece had the same sort of drum/flute tune.
Also most of em are very short peices - i guess
they edited it from the BGM of the Documentary movie to make a CD.. But still worth buying .
