Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

Balaji,
Thanks for pointing out the factual error : I was mistaken about the name of the movie. It is indeed "16 vayadhinile" (16ella vayasu) in Telugu.

Kiruba, I am in total agreement with you over the Mission statement. However, I think the priorities should be 1.BGM pieces and 2.Instrumental versions of songs. This is so provided IR agrees to make his BGM pieces full fledged, esp the short & sweet ones. If he is unable to find the time then we can reduce the priority to BGM pieces. But as of now, I think we could have BGM pieces on top of our list.
Apart from this, it is very heartening to see your enthusiastic response to this idea. Keep flooding us with your views.

Hi Guys,
Y'day I bought soundtrak of Schindlers'list by John Williams. Beleive me, I have listened to it
many times and just got hooked to it. Just awesome. The theme music just reflects the Sogam in different dimensions. Moreover the same theme music is repeated in some other numbers but
with different instruments.
We can take this as a modal. I can at least imagine 20 + CDs from IR's motion picture soundtracks. If u look closely the "India 24 hours " album, it is done in the same way (theme music
which is represented in different instruments to reflect the different dimension). Always IR has some theme music for every movie (at least movies like nayagan, Raja parvai, Salogai oli etc.,), even for every character. As far as the stuff is concerned there is no dearth. But how well we are commercially going to do this is also very important.
The CD I bought is recorded in Analog and Mastered digitally. Even they have a disclaimer abt the hiss noise.
Pl. count me on this project.

venus: what u suggested is a good idea , but the theme music of any film will appeal only when the people are able to identify the music with the film. taking schindler's list , the raw sadness that the film stands for, will come into the mind even when u can just appreciate the music. since IR's' movies are not known outside, i would like the album to project IR's mastery as a composer, independent of attachment to any film. songs and BGM pieces can stand alone, but not theme music. The listener should be bowled over by the sheer creativity in IR's work, which is really world's best.

Guys, Kiruba has made a Mission statement and listed some priorities. I have slightly changed the priorities. Please give your view as to whether you are with this Mission statement and priorities or not.
If there is a lot of divergence in our opinion, we can go for some voting process. LETS LOSE OUR INERTIA!!!

What is the mission statement? Is it to help the world know that we in India have the greatest composer (and, genius) ever?
As fans of this genius, then we should be highly motivated and responsible for this cause. If this is the objective, then we have to find out if Raja would speak (musically of course) in the language of non-Indian music listeners. That means looking at what type of music has sold the maximum number of albums in the world. There are two great musical styles that come to the fore: Funk-Pop-Rock (whatever) and Jazz-Rock-Funk (whatever). Based on these two styles, respectively, the two most famous albums are: Thriller by Michael Jackson and Brothers-in-Arms by Dire Straits. These are the styles that our Maestro must attempt to present and not the language of symphony, which has only a small slice in the pie of music lovers. I can understand why Raja wanted to present his contribution to the world in the form of symphony. Because his strength lies in the traditional orchestral methods. That is not to say that Raja has not found any other styles difficult or unappealing, in fact, he has made some famous hits in Indianized versions of funk-pop and jazz-rock. However, if Isaignani has to appeal, at for his devoted southIndian fans' sake, to the 40 million CD buyers of the two most popular albums, then he has to write similar themes and HAVE international singers to sing them. If this is done, then Raja (actully it is us) will have proved to the world that there is nothing in music that has not been done already by him and that too in a fraction of the time taken by any successfull artiste in this world.
What do you folks think? I mean let us forget BGM or other types of orchestral works. Let us find out if we can have our IR also do some stuff really beyond his cultural vibes. That is the real stuff for us to prove. I am willing to be behind the project for the rest of my life, if there is a great deal of support and honest opinion about this. (I am most back home next year!)
Bottomline: Anything that can beat 'Thriller' and 'Borthers-in-Arms' has to come from our Raja and only his really devoted fans like us can work out a project like this. We can get RAJA'S own new upcoming recording studio to arrange the production. After all, it is his fans here in the US who will finance the project. It is a challenge for us and will be a breath of different air for IR. This is a highly dreamy project, but I know if there is one who has done the impossible in this universe, it is our own Maestro. (Come on, let us get started...)
Any takers for the Thriller, my Brothers-In-Arms?

Balaji : Let's not lose inertia in one sense - the good response should keep continuing. But consider the progress we have made. Each of us has shown enthu but we are still a bit away from deciding what exactly we are going to do. In this sense, lets lose our inertia. Do you agree?

Guys & gals, you might be interested in this statistic I have collected: UNTIL NOW, around 15 people have shown interest in the roject out of which 11 are committed. The others' stand is a bit unclear. These 11 are:
1. SR Kaushik
2. VS Srinivas
3. Balaji
4. Kiruba
5. Suresh
6. Venus
7. RIDING ACROSS THE RIVE(please give your name, it will be much more convenient)
8. Nirupama
9. Srinath
10. Anand Mahadevan
11. Buddy
Please tell me if I have missed out any names or added any by mistake :-)
The stand of the following is not clear although they have whole heartedly encouraged the project.
Geetha, Shankar, Long Live IR.
I would like to know if I can count them in.
I request all of you once again to give your opinion about the Mission st and priorities that Kiruba has prepared. Only if all of you respond can we arrive at some consensus.
As regards RIDING AC...'s remark that we should go for trendy music, I agree that we should go for trendy recording. But as far as music style goes, IR is a natural for melody - melody is undoubtedly his strength. So we must stick to it(IMHO).

I am for a record for trendy music that emphasises melody, rhythm, jazz and rock.

Kaushik, IRs strength is melody. I dont think it is necessary to do new compostions (like RIDE-ACROSS-THE_RIVER) suggested. We have to go with IRs proven, time-tested music. Re: BGM vs Instrumental, Balaji has a point. We have to make sure the BGM is relevant/makes sense outside of the context of the movie as well.
(We have to get newtfmpage guys also involved, like Rajaraman, Ravi, then it will look like a production from newtfmpage and we can get free plug for the albums on newtfmpage :-))

Please find the cost of the whole thing, how much you need to coax IR to take up this project, then
find how many sponsors are there.
please tell us.

Good to see some more people joining here. Hope we will succeed.
kiruba:
if not TFM production, we can atleast make it as www.ilaiyarajafans.com production, provided sathya & nithin approve this.
but, how & where to proceed frm here?

Rajaram, TFM guys et al.
Here's the summary :
Promote a public/private/partnership company to accomplish the foll. mission. (I have to talk to my lawyer friends about the exact type of company). A joint venture with a label for worldwide marketing is contemplated (Sony, Magnasoudn, RealWorld, Ethnic)
Mission Statement
-----------------
To make IRs music reach a worldwide audience in a recording medium of really high quality.
Priorities (guided by mission statement)
----------
1) Instrumental version of songs with good orchestration (to reach a wider audience)
(these have to re-recorded)
2) Interesting BGM pieces
(could be just remastered)
3) Songs with exceptional lyrics, melody and orchestration.
(could be just remastered)
(Kaushik feels pri 1 and 2 should be reversed)
(No cost estimates have been made so far. I am still trying to find out what kind of tapes the originals were made so as to get an estimate for items for 2 and 3. In Toronto, it costs $200 to master a single CD. So to do it in high quality I can estimate it at $2000 or so. But I will confirm this later)

so when do we begin?
sponsor needed (many versus one or two sponsors, recording producers) Is anyone influential in this TFM group?
how much will Mr. Ilayaraja ask for the project?
when do we meet him? Can we arrange through any really S Indian producer with influence?
