TFM boasts of several contemporary poets like Bharadhidhasan, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Kannadhasan and Vali (Version I) who penned several songs dealing with social issues such as work ethic (uzhaippu), labor rights, women's position in society, religion, caste, patriotism/ nationalism, money/power/greed and the such. In addition, non-film kavidhaigaL from Bharadhi and Bharadhidhasan have been included in TFM to heighten social awareness.
Let's go ahead and discuss some of these songs--old and new--which address some key social issues even as they were entertaining the masses in the context of the movie situation. Please elaborate on the lyrics and your thoughts on the same as your time would allow.

Let's continue the discussion on the social principles from the kaNNadhAsan-vAli era while we continue to share the thoughts provoked by some of these songs....

Corrections and additions to my posting of April 24, 11:47:
yAdhum oorE yAvarum kELir was penned by kalaiyan poongundRanAr, not Bharadhi as I'd mentioned. Apologies.
Manisekaran:
Thank you for taking the time to educate us on Marudhakasi's background and contributions. I, like several others here, was not very familiar with this lyricist's works until I read your posting.
Will be back to discuss kaNNadhAsan-vAli era songs later..

kaNNadhAsan does not need much of an introduction to our generation.
In contrast to several poems we've seen previously in this thread, kaNNadhAsan's kavidhaigaL seem to have a personal, emotional touch which a common man can relate to.
On Living:
I'd talked earlier about Bharadhi's idea of what a good life is, expressed so well in his kaaNi nilam vENdum. kaNNadhAsan's ideal everyday-life expressed below is quite similar: materialism in moderation, true friendship, true love, thamizhp patRu, patriotism, public service if possible, world peace. Movie: Shanthi.

kaNNadhAsan continued.....
On Caste, Creed, Class, Religion
Similar to Bharadhi, kaNNadhAsan differentiates humans based only on their character.
From "karNan":
kaNNukkuk kulam Edhu

viNNukkuL pirivu(u) Edhu

piRappin rahasiyam idhu allavA?
idhu pEsum dheivaththin poruL allavA?
From "pAva mannippu":
edhanaik kaNdAn madhamthanaip padaiththAn (Note: the word "madham" was replaced by "paNam" later due to censor restrictions)
On Work Ethic/ Self-help & Self-Esteem/ Money:
While kaNNadhAsan's works do not get into organized Labor issues in such detail as PattukkOttaiyaar's does, they do address the material & emotional fruits of labor at the individual level.
From "paNam" re self-esteem:
vAl pidiththE vayiRu vaLarththu
uyir vAzhAdhu iruppadhu mAnam
kAl pidiththE kaikoopiyE
kaNdOraik koNdAdi pon thEdavE
kAkkai pidippadhu avamAnam
From "pazhani" emphasizing agriculture & self-help:

oorOdum sErndhu uNNalAm
maNNilE thangam uNdu maNiyum uNdu vairam uNdu
kaNNilE kANach cheyyum kaigaL uNdu vErvai uNdu
A similar song on self-employment from "kanniyin kAdhali":
kai madakki sEvagamthAn seyyavum vENdAm
ejamAn kattaLaikkuk kAththukkittu niRkavum vENdAm!
paiyap paiyap pEsip paNam vAngavum vENdAm

From "kaRuppup paNam" about the social consequences of money:
kaiyilE paNamirundhAl kazhudhaikooda arasanadi
kaithatta ALirundhAl kAkkai kooda azhaganadi
On Socialism & Resource Allocation:
Bharadhi sang with passion thani oruvanukku uNavillai enil jagaththinai azhiththiduvOm.
kaNNadhAsan in "kaRuppup paNam":
ellArum ellAmum peRa vENdum
ingu illAmai illAdha nilai vENdum
vallAn poruL kuvikkum thani udaimai neengi
vara vENdum thirunAttil podhu udaimai

From "pachchai viLakku":
padiththa mAndhar niRaindha nAttil
pArkkum yAvum podhu udaimai
(What an irony!)
I also found some thoughtful verses from kaNNadhAsan reflecting his opinions on the plight of women in the society including the dowry system, widow remarriage and the usual double standards. I'll try to post them if possible.

kaNNadhAsan on Women's Issues
On the Dowry System which is alive and well even today, despite Bharadhi, despite Laws, despite individual Consciences:
The following verse is from a romantic duet, which can be applied to this issue (my own interpretation). Movie: neeyA nAnA
ponnum poruLum parisalla--avai
poovaikku mElE peridhalla
ennai unakkE thandhu vittEn--adhai
idhayam thiRandhu solli vittEn
In this following verse, he describes the feelings of a woman whose life is doomed because of this issue.
peN koLLa vandhAr endReNNi--siRu
pEdhai nAn sindhinEn Anandhak kaNNeer
pon koLLa vandhAr enndRaRiyEn--ini

kaNNadhAsan on Women's Issues continued....
On widow remarriage:
This issue does not need much prefacing. I'll just go ahead and give full lyrics to this song from "pudhiya pAdhai".
