That was the period when the top stars weren't afraid to release two of their movies on the same day! If I am correct "Iru malargaL" was also released on the same Deepavali Day and as a medical student and the proud President of "Student Fans of Sivaji" [Med. Wing!!], I was able to walk into Santhi Theater for tickets[beating the long crowds] and was generous in writing rec. letters to fellow students for the same!! bb, you made me go on the memory lane!! Great song! Thanks!

Was listening to 'kOdi inbam'. Freshness, IR's blossoming very palpable. Great song, crooned by the great TFM crooners. The song reminds me of SD Burman's 'hOtOn pE aisI bAth' from Jewel Thief.

bb: excellent choices for SOTD in general and Ponmagal vandaal in particular. If you watch the movie, you would notice the prelude to the song matches the interlude of "yaadum OOre" from Ninaithale Inikkum.

Great composition, especially the sandhams in the charanam. Unfortunately when TMS sings "yogame vaannnggg" it doesnt sound too pleasing. Looks like TMS turned nasal even in the 60s. But his spirited singing and MSV's melody-making skills makes this one crackle with energy
bb, nice job on the IR SOTD songs link. Is a "play all" option possible?

SK, I think you meant Engirundho Vandhaal, for it was Engiruntho Vandhaal that was released along with Sorgam for Deepavali 1970 ; Iru Malargal had come in 1967.

Thanks again for this great song of all time. (I find the speed to be okay). I heard, after this song became hit, MGR demanded a same kind(of fast flow song) from MSV, and he gave `engE avaL, endrE manam.."

Song of the Day: nadiganin kaadhali from thaai illaamal naan illai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nadiganin.rm
- Sung by SPB. Music by Shankar-Ganesh.
- Add one more to the list of heavenly SPB songs. The song is filled with his 'touch'; His nonchalant laugh after "naadagamaa"; His whispering at the end of the charanam "oru mayakkam varavazhaikkum iLam kumaran naanammaa"; Or his second and more playful take on "paLLiyil thuLLidum puLLi maan unnai naan"; Aahaa!
- The film starred Kamal and Sridevi. The lyrics of this song seem to have Kamal in mind ("kaadhal iLavarasan kalaith thiranai nee ariyaai"). 'VadivElan manasu vachchaan' is another song from the same movie.
- Lyrics for the song is here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/19780.24587.23.02.05.html
- There will be no updates next week. Columbus, Columbus, vittaachu leavu!

Subject: Some recollection of Sorkam Movie
Dear Balaji,
I write this recollecting my school days. Also recollecting the movie Sorkam.
1) TSorkam was released in the prestigious theatre complex Devi. First movie screened in Devi theatre. Fans will remember Ulakam sutrum valiban released in Devi paradise.
2) Generally cutouts will attract fans. But for this movie director Ramanna planned to keep something different. So, he went for a tree installed in front of Devi theatre with paper rupees hanging from the branches of the tree. In those days it was very attractive to see Ganesan's cutout under that money-tree. Fabulous one. I cannot forget that one.
3) What a song with fast beat. TMS said. I am honored to sing this different song set by Mellisai mannar. He was born to sing for Sivaji and MG Ramachandran.
I also remember one more thing. The same song was used in a movie directed by Vikraman, music by SA Rajakumar. This version was sung by Yesudas. Not a ble to remember the name of film. I think one Babu and Suma ranganath acted in that film. You know what KJY said. I could not do justice as TMS anna did. That is the difference.
Good work Balaji. Keep it up.
Yours sincerely
NS Ramanthan

saravanan , this is unfair. engalukkum chance koduppa!
yes Engiruntho vandhaal it was. I remember my parents liking Sivaji's performance in this one while as a kid I liked the antics of MRR vasu, nagesh in Sorgam better.
bb,
I remember " Vadivelan " from the movie better for the nasal way in which TMS sang for Kamal - was he trying to sound young or was it that tMS thought Kamal was effeminate and sang accordingly!
I can almost here Devar telling SG athellam venaamppa nama allu TMS oru pattavathu paadanum. antha podiyannukku etha mathiri paada sollalam.mathathu avan paarthuppan ennada muruga sarithaane!

Just heard the "kodi inbam" song, it was truly a revelation. The 1st violing interlude was just top class and the veenai/sitar interlude was the next best.
IRs Malayamaruthams have been really good. This would be 3rd in my list of IRs malayamruthams after "ethilum ingu iruppan avan yaaro" - Bharathi, "Neela kuyile unnodu naan panpaaduven" - Magudi. I would rate "thendral ennai muththamittadhu" almost as good as this.

Fitting choice, considering it is SPB’s b’day! This was among SPB’s biggest hits in that time, and he unfailingly sang it in all his stage shows. It will surely rank among ‘Kavignar Vazhangiya Devarin’ S-G’s most popular songs.
Thaayillamal Naanillai (1979/Devar Films) followed Thaai Meedhu Sathiyam –1978. Sando MMA Chiannappa Devar passed away while Thaai Meedhu Sathiyam was being completed. And Thaayillamal Naanillai was the first wholly independent venture of R.Thyagarjan B.Com.& C.Dhandayudhapani B.A. The titles, however still credited the story and screenplay to the late Devar.
Even till Thaai Meedhu Sathiyam, Devar Films remained a TMS bastion. And though he was slowly losing out elsewhere, (especially for the younger actors) from the mid-70s, Devar Films /Dhandayudhapani Films firmly remained his unquestioned citadel, irrespective of who the actor was. Thus while the younger actors got SPB, KJY & JC to sing for them generally, when they were acting in Devar’s films, it was still only TMS who sang for them-- Sivakumar (Vellikizhamai Viratham/Sorgam Naragam. Aatukkaara Alamelu), Vijayakumar (Thaai Illakkuzhanthai/Sorgam Naragam), Rajnikanth (Thaai Meedhu Sathiyam) and Kamal (Thaai Illamal Naanillai). In a way Thaayillamal Naanillai marked the end of the TMS reign in Devar Films, and SPB took over in style. (Of course, SPB was no stranger to the legendary company; one of his earliest hits ‘kalyaNa ramanukkum kaNNana janagikkum’ was for Dhandayudhapani Films’ Maanavan (1970). However, TMS’s swansong for Devar Films was in the film that followed Thaayillamal Naanillai the same year- Annai Or Aalayam, when Devar Films went to IR for the first time. TMS got to sing a haunting asareeri ‘amma nee sumandha piLLai’, while SPB sang the remaining 3 songs for Rajini.
Kamal as Raja, the star performer Raja of Vel Murugan Nadaga Sabha, run by Thengai, and Sridevi as Bhuvanadevi, the daughter of Kalathoor Zamindar Major, who falls for Raja were the lead pair of Thaayillamal Naanillai. Jaiganesh, Bombay Madhumalini, Sukumari, Nagesh, Surulirajan, YGM, Chachu were the others in the cast. Rajini was the surprise addition in a guest role as Pichua Pakkiri.
Foremost among the other songs was ‘vadivElan manasu vechaan’ (TMS/PS). And the grossly overlooked song is a drama ditty- the boisterous Alli Durbaar- SC Krishnan begins with a great ‘vaNakkam vaNakkam vaNakkam’ -so reminiscent of ‘raja maharaja vendhEnE’ of yore, TMS (singing for Kamal) follows with ‘salaam vechEn salaam vechEn salaam vechEnE’, and PS is not far behind with a nonchalant ‘chal mohana raaNi alli raaNi malligai mEni’.
SPB’s ‘podi vaikkirEn sokku podi vaikkirEn’ (begins with the hilarious ‘alEk amarnath--vivEk viswanath’) and PS’s ‘eena meena enadhu vizhi maana thEna’ were the other songs.
‘nadiganin kaadhali’ is the song when Raja and Bhuvana meet for the first time. The drama troupe has come to Kalathoor Zameen for staging a play. Bhuvana is in the audience, along with her father and her cousin Mohan ( Jaignesh).
‘Thoongum Azhagi’ is the drama, and Jaya (Bombay Madhumalini) is shown in a deep slumber. Raja appears as the prince who wakes her up with his passionate song. And as the song progresses, Bhuvana imagines herself dancing with Raja. At the end of the song, Bhuvana is so spellbound that she impulsively runs up the stage, and presents Raja with her gold ring.
Btw, the song, as is usually aired, begins with Kamal’s ‘chinna idhazhgaL--’. I’ve put up the entire song here:

Madhumalini I ezhppa ippadi oru paata? The dance movements or choreography as it is supposed to be called was a big joke with Kamal counting steps and Madhumalini trying to imitate Abdul Qadir's bowling action.I had one doubt ...how did Kamal manage to get into the pant and how he managed to get out or was it stiched around Kamal?
The transition from Kamal's voice to SPB's is absolutely seamless. For SPB's voice...this is a dance number any date.
Nagesh takes the cake for his cameo.Rajini would spit on Nagesh's face for arranging him to bash up Kamal.Nagesh would revert "Echa vitten solluppa".
Kupps,
For the first time i ever heard about the raag Rasika Ranjani.A google search brings me details from.........you got it .......... one of IR sites. So true to my profession, still i am awaiting an external confirmation for the raag from some non-IR sites.Sitting in Dubai, the theory books in hand and Internet gives little about Rasika Ranjani.
However while playing ämudhey Thamizhe has the swaras of Malayamarutham MINUS the Ne.(Sa Ri Ga Pa Dha ).Searching for this in the Hindustani sites I found that it is called "Raag Vibhas".Also the pattern of IR arrangment brings Mohanam style.Technically Mohanam and Vibhas have common swaras except R1 for Vibhas and R2 for Mohanam.
Considering the above facts, i have to give it to you - ämudhe"is NOT Malayamarutham. But kindly get me the links to confirm that Vibhas is indeed Rasika Ranjani.
