ARR is phenomenal when it comes to songs... But is he equally good in BGM of his movies...? and why does sabesh-murali (deva's brothers) assist him???
My personal favorite bits are...
1. flute bit in Jodi
2. Title Sax in KKKK
3. Veena bit in Alai payuthey
His work in rhythm and duet are equally impressive... but what about the rest of the long list of movies? your responses plz :-)

ARR had and have tried a lot of unique things in BGM..unfortunately it didn't stand up to the public expectations as his new approach in songs. MayB IR have had laid his foundation (in BGM) much more deeper in our hearts from long ago..nobody till now to have touched the viewers heart much more than IR!..eventough ARR seems equally capable in terms of 'techno-performance'.

That he sticks to a theme music is commendable (i.e. when he really scores the thing...I think he does for MR / Shankar)...but often this is based on one of the songs in the movie and hence may not call for much effort, IMO:-)

the only BGMs of ARR (i mean entire movie, not bits and pieces) that impressed me was his score for Bombay and Iruvar. excellent. the rest are not worth writing about.

Indeed...a classic...all arr fans listen to it and learn that arr can never do bgms like this (maybe we should thank God for this?!)

Is there no end to this crap?
There are more important things in life - like attending to your bathroom urgencies, eating, sleeping and above all enjoying other pleasures. Amongst all of these, why do ARR and IR bother you so much, and why do you have to keep yaking this all your life? If you guys really know what music is, why dont you compose one your own so that we shall all listen? Does your job bore you so much, or do your wives dont give you any pleasure at all that you have to throw your grievances to a public forum targeting someone totally irrelavant to our basic living?
Grow up guys, and attend to your jobs. That pays you, not this.
Jai ram!

another IR / ARR fight is not what i wanted by this thread.. forget about rest.. If u dont like arr's bgm, so be it... But think of this thread as only for arr fans or for those who are more in the center than extremes. IR bgm has nothing to do with arr 's bgm.... and I am sorry for my earlier posting as it seems to have started another round of fights. please let us keep pure arr 's bgm as the subject of this...

Anyone know how does ARR score the BGM for movies? Does it in the same traditional way (synchronising reel by reel) in an outside studio or does it in his home studio? How many times does he see the movie?

In one interview, ARR said he does not have to hear the story to compose the songs. Its all the same he said !!. But I guess he has to watch the movie to do the BGM. My impression is he is not interested in doing BGM. He is only interested in making songs. BTW, he uses his drum machine also for the BGM. Rhythm ..Rhythm..that is ARR.

Guys!!
BGM is a whole new playground.. ARR is exceptionally backward in this arena (in my opinion).. otherwise, he is way ahead of n e body new from TFM be it international success
Let this not be a IR-ARR tug of war(though being an IR fan I would like to say that).. Travis, secondly you cannot just say this forum for ARR fans.. if you are already a fan and have a liking then u r going to be biased.. if it is subject to opinion then there will be a lot of criticizm..

kiru,
One more thing about ARR songs. The songs mostly are meant to appear good in the album. He do compromise nativity.
I heard Boys songs and they were fresh and good. But when I saw the movie, most of the Boys singing in the movie are Tamils and most of the singers used in the movie are non tamils. Just to create a different feel the nativity was compromised.
This again is the difference between IR and ARR. IR gives more importance to how the song appear in movie rather than in Album. Recent example is Virumandi, Kombule poove sutti. In between one guy will make horrible sound in the song. I am sure it will fit the screen, but look offbeat in the album.
ARR gives importance to album as he discovered there is more revenue(comparable to revenue from movie running profit) from album and it is too costly to loose for nativity.

Kiru,
And this is the reason why IR's BGMs are very good. As he gives importance to nativity, he tends to concentrate in BGM, even on a average movie. Also his fastness in composing makes it possible for him.
ARR can also do good BGM, but it will take more time for him to do and probably he felt there is no return on investing that much time on BGMs.

Comparison between IR and ARR is inevitable.
But we should realise thet they are from different backgrounds and totally different philosophies.
IR is out and out a 'Film' man. People in the Film Industry respect him a lot not just for his music alone but for various other observations and suggestions he makes.
Infact, if he was not so strict in sticking only to music and related activities, I am sure he would be a assitant director in some movies, do screen play in another and so on and probably would have achieved fame in those activities too.

And sorry for the digression in topic in an ARR thread. My sincere apologies. We should probably start a new thread on this. I did not look at the Topic, just read the last few posts and replied.
Sorry again

Guys,
Just listen to Roja,Thiruda Thiruda,,May Matham,Bombay,Iruvar,Muthu,Anthi Mantharai,Uyire,Ratchagan,Duet,KKKK.Infact Ratchagan had a good BGM.The list goes on.Problem is that we people are used to IR's way of BGM composing and we are not able to come into terms with ARR's style. He uses a lot of western insruments and influenced by western classical. While IR is the master of BGM ,ARR is nothing less .He is not equal to IR standards but enough to make it big.

how do you compare the following:
1. bgm of msv vs ir
2. bgm of kvm vs ir
3. bgm of ir vs arr
4. bgm of ir vs deva
5. bgm of ?? vs ??
You can add all you want for this comparison!!

It is not a problem, it is just plain GOOD rather GR8 back ground scores that have been heard/understood by most of the ppl. so let us not compare it. The problem here is acceptance.. Plz!!..

ARR has given few good BGMs for MR. Happened to see the climax of Kannthil Muthamittaal in a DTS 7.1 system. The BGM + Sound Effects + Voice Modulations + Cameragraphy + Sound Mixing + Mani's Direction is simply great. That one scene will prove why the movie got so much awards.
(But it will be good if ARR repeats the same, for other Directors too.)

Isiganani, is the scale on BGM, where ARR scores 5 out of 10.
