Swades, massive success in Bangalore
Its smooth sailing for Swades
The Asian Age
Bangalore, Dec. 22: Another Hindi film released last week is doing unhindered
business in the
city despite the unofficial three week moratorium on non-Kannada films. The Shah
Rukh Khan
starrer, Swades is drawing large crowds in its first week and may even improve
on the
performance of his other film Veer Zaara which was released earlier in the city.
Swades has been released in six theatres and two multiplexes in Bangalore and
the collections
are extraordinary compared to those of earlier Hindi films. According to trade
estimates, the
film directed by Ashuthosh Gowarikar will collect around Rs 60 lakhs from the 8
prints released
in the first week which film analysts say, is a commendable performance for a
Hindi film.
Veer Zaara which was released here a few days after it had an all India release,
collected a
gross amount of Rs 93 lakhs in the city during its six-week run.
Interestingly, the two multiplexes where the ticket fares are pretty high, have
had good
collections even exceeding the collections at the other theatres where Swades
was released.
According to Mr Jeewan Chandra Joshi, manager, film cell of the PVR multiplex,
Swades is
playing to a full house in both theatres at the complex while the enquiries
through Internet and current bookings have been unprecedented.
Speaking to The Asian Age, he said of the eleven theatres in the PVR complex,
there has been
heavy booking at the two theatres screening Swades compared to other star
studded films like Musafir, Aithraaz and Hulchul.
Mr Venu of Vaibhav Theatre says the collections of Swades have exceeded the
collections of Veer
Zaara in the first week. According to him, Bangalore city theatres have yielded
good returns to
the producers of the film compared to theatres in other metropolitan centres
with the collections at the Cauvery and Rex theatres also exceeding expectations.

Swades rocks in pardes
SHUMITA MAHAJAN
Swades is riding high on the partisan fervour of Indians overseas,
even while home audiences prefer to wait and watch.
A.R Rahman's lilting music, a storyline with punch, and a stellar
performance from Shah Rukh Khan come out trumps in Swades, which
released to packed audiences last week. Director Ashutosh Gowariker's
much-awaited Swades seems to have struck the right chord with overseas
audiences even while it receives mixed reactions on home soil. In the
US, in its threeday opening weekend, the movie is reported to have
crossed $ 424804, one of the highest for a mainstream Hindi movie.
"The weekend before Christmas in the US sees more shopping action than
movie viewing. In this period, Swades recorded the third largest per
screen average there at $ 6,667 beating even heavyweight Hollywood
movies like Polar Express and The Incredibles, and just below Ocean's
Twelve," says Ronnie Screvala, CEOUTV, the co-producers and overseas
distributors of the film.
Besides the US, the film is also reported to be drawing crowds into
theatres at Dubai and the UAE. "We introduced dual subtitles, Arabic
and English, and that really worked as it attracted the expat
audiences of the region," says Screvala. So much so, that as against
the usual 15 odd prints that normally are released in these parts,
Swades has 25 prints showing in Dubai and the UAE. In Dubai alone, it
is believed to have crossed $ 175,000 in its opening weekend β which
is well above the previous SRKstarrer, Veer Zaara.
The patriotic flavour of Swades has apparently managed to excite even
the non-traditional European market. France, Germany, Norway and
Switzerland witnessed simultaneous releases of the film and initial
responses look promising. With such an amazing response worldwide, why
is similar audience zest not apparent in India as yet? "Audiences here
look for high entertainment value. Swades' storyline is unusual.
Indian viewers take time to respond to offbeat films. Even Baghban
started picking up after three weeks. In Patna, Kolkata and Southern
parts of India, Swades has been a runaway success. We are sure
wordof-mouth acclaim will bring in the viewers soon," says Screvala.
Till then the indigenous Swades continues to rock fans across the seas.

Now, that's a film! -
Shailesh Kapoor
It's been a week, and I'm still pinching myself. To believe that a
mainstream filmmaker can make a film like Swades in today's day and
age is to believe in the impossible. Literally. Ashutosh Gowariker's
venture is not only cinematically and technically awesome, it is
perhaps the noblest film made to date in India. And indeed, as many
critics have pointed out, here's finally a film that does justice the
much-abused word 'cross-over'.
So many questions intrigue and baffle you when you walk out of the
Swades experience, in a state of daze. It is evident that this (make
it THIS) is the film Gowariker set out to make. It is evident that he
didn't want his Swades to be packed with commercial elements like
fiery dialogues, action set pieces, melodramatic showdowns, patriotic
fervor and other such surefire box-office carrots.
At every stage in his film, Gowariker holds back the temptation to go
commercial. Simply to do justice to the core of Swades, and give it
the authentic texture that is so critical to the impact the film can
make on our sensibilities.
And impact it does make. No, the NRIs won't flock back to India like
sheep yearning for their favorite meadows, after watching Swades. No,
the educated, urban India youth won't feel the craving to adopt a
village or a cause therein for the rest of their life. For most
Swades watchers, life may not change.
But for some of us - and it's not a small 'some' given our 10-digit
population Swades has created a lasting impact on our minds. It
will make us read more about India, want to know more about the
issues raised in the film, make our small but significant
contribution, once in a while, to make our country better.
Public memory is short. Swades, the film, will come and go. It's
already struggling to stay afloat at the box-office, which is no
surprise. But Swades, the experience, will stay with us for a long
time. And along with that will stay three significant human efforts
involved with the film.
First, Ashutosh Gowariker himself. To have the courage to follow
Lagaan up with a film like Swades, and produce it himself, is not the
stuff ordinary mortals are made of. Swades is a truly gutsy film, and
Gowariker can take a bow, if ever anyone deserved one.
Second, Shah Rukh Khan. All the predictable acting, all the Rahuls,
all the dumbed-down roles be forgiven. The superstar has redeemed
himself no ends with Swades. His decision to do the film itself calls
for applause. And his razor-sharp and perfectly flawless performance
calls for accolades unlimited.
Third, and this one's a pleasant surprise, the critics in India. It
was heart-warming to see how every critic and film journalist who
mattered saw the film outside the precincts of commercial cues and
ticket sales. Maybe the film was too noble for them to do otherwise.
But nevertheless, they did what they did anyway.
Two weeks back, I lamented at how 2004 has been a poor year from the
viewpoint of the history of Indian cinema. Not any more. A golden
chapter has been drafted.

The Hindu Friday Review on Swades
http://www.hindu.com/fr/2004/12/24/stories/2004122402850305.htm
Swades
IT IS an idealistic film and, the way the narration unfolds, is not in
the populist genre. Which is probably why it is not the kind that will
go down well with audiences fed on the likes of "Veer Zaara," "Dil
Wale Dulhaniya" and "Kabhi Kushi... "
There are no obvious sequences of conflict, no shouting, loud
dramatisation of situations and no bold love scenes to catch the fancy
of viewers, especially the youngsters.
Neither is it filled with dialogue that will make the junta clap in
enthusiasm. Besides, it is not particularly a unique story either
of
a successful NRI who comes back to his roots something many have
taken up in myriad ways and with varying successes.
Yet, "Swades" is beautiful. Not instantly obvious, but in the many
subtle ways that give the entire film its sense of poignancy. Yes it
is long, on many occasions very verbose and with a feel and tempo of a
well-made documentary on the problems of a backward nation. And yes
there is the mandatory love story binding two people from differing
worlds towards a common goal but not before they overcome their
initial differences! Nothing that has not been seen earlier.
But "Swades" is unique. Just as "Laagan" was. And it is unfair to
compare the two simply because "Laagan" had plenty of dramatic
elements, while this one relies entirely on the feelings of a man and
his discovery of the country of his origin. Just how dramatic can that
be? And just how differently can a director make it? Yet when
sensitive, honest minds blend and merge, the film gets on a different
footing altogether.
Encapsulated best through the characterisation of the protagonist,
Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist working in the US who comes down to
the village of Charanpur in search of his foster mother, Kaveriamma
(Kishori Ballal). And how this experience changes his perceptions
about India and his own goals in life.
Take the music. This has to be one of A. R. Rahman's most poignant
works. The way the background score and the songs have been realised
and put to visuals they need to be appreciated at different levels
melody, use of musical instruments and brevity of pieces that
highlight and fade just in time for the emotion to fleetingly touch
and move on.
Even as the first song "Yunhi Chala" moves from philosophical
undertones to its ordinary usage of words, the blending of a western
instrument with the completely native one highlights in a subtle way
the entry of a man coming from a western world into the interiors of a
rural area; just as the "Yeh Tara Woh Tara" number effectively catches
with sensitivity the mood of a crowd living with constant power
shortage!
Each song in itself has lyrics (Javed Akhtar) where simple words are
strung together lucidly and with an ease sometimes transcending the
melody. There is poetry, despite its overt commonplace usage.
As for Ashutosh Gowrikar there is honesty in his vision that comes
from the heart and not with an eye on commercial success.
Though the portions shot in space stations don't seem entirely
convincing with the chief, John, being most uncomfortable before the
camera, he makes Mohan a very likable character.
Not in the flamboyant, heroic way, but in the inherently simple manner
that allows him to patiently relate to an assorted bunch of villagers
in rustic India.
Shah Rukh Khan becomes Mohan as his passage to India progresses. He
does not indulge in excess at any point but remains the earnest
character the director has essayed for him.
Gayathri Joshi is new and is being introduced as Gita, the fiery and
idealistic teacher who makes Charanpur her home. Gauche in the
emotional scenes, she ends up doing a decent job overall.
Though one does wonder why the director did not de-glamorise her
enough. Or how one man is able to generate electricity?
"Swades" needs mental preparation to view it in the context and length
it has been made. If you don't look for those finer aspects of honesty
and realism, you cannot enjoy it!
