I have always wondered this.
If age factor is the issue, how is it that Deva who should be the in the same age group, is able to command quite a following?
Please do not insult the yonger generation by refering to deteriorating music taste.
Although there are some youngsters who prefer Ilayaraja, the number is very small.
Most youngsters prefer ARR, Deva, HJ, SAR, Vidhyasagar, etc.
Generally Ilayaraja's genre of music do not seem to hold the younger crowd. Why do you think this is?

Fantastic answers!! Keep it up!!
Personally I feel there is NO GENRE of music that ARR cannot touch. I feel the same for IR also and even for Salil Chaudhary or MSV. If ARR isnt giving too many pure Carnatic songs, its becoz many people have started ignoring such music. Western music is in vogue and "desi music" is considered "outdated". But that has nothing to do with ARR's (or IR's) abilities.
His score in Lagaan again has proved what a genius he is and all his forthcoming films will.
Having said that let me tell you that I am myself only 21 years of age and I adore the music of IR...esp his 70s and early 80s songs. I also adore many composers in various regional languages whose work was at its peak in the 50s and 60s. This IR-ARR bickering is quite irrelevant and is being repeated on too many threads with too many personal attacks.

You remind me of the bible toting preacher in my neighbourhood. He will claim that Jesus is the only way to God and if asked why, he will quote his bible.
Athey logic thaan ungaloada logic. You started out by saying that ARR's songs are 95% youth-oriented, and when given examples of movies that were not, you have twisted the entire thing and claim IR has done a lot of youth songs.

i am really surprised that this thread is attracting such serious discussions. gowri's only aim is provoking ir fans. whether they are hard core or soft core.
why should anyone bother about adulations of ir? if you are a fan of somebody, you can also start threads like these and you can find like-minded people always such as:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/6302.04.57.19.html
http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/17374.10.51.50.html

others can avoid such threads if they don't like them!
instead of crying like 'jing chakka', 'thalayil thukki vachu adarathu'. you claim to be saner than hcirf, then why do you want to correct such fellows? you kind of doing part time psychiatrists?

Nobody bothers about adulations. But while being high on adulations, some people tend to get carried away and start bashing other artistes.
And that;s when the fun begins. :)
As to why this thread is drawing a lot of discussion, it is because the carpet is being pulled from underneath. :)

Why Ilayaraja's Music Does Not Appeal to the Younger Generation??
Who told u this, Gowri?
Well, I am 25 & young (I hope so, he he), I have been listening to IR since Annakizhi to kasi, I grew up listening to IR/MSV/KVM/SPB/KJY/SJ/PS/Jeyachandran, I am an amateur singer in UK, in my music band, most of the youngsters prefer old IR/MSV songs to sing in stage shows, we are very broad minded people, we sing lots of ARR songs as well, but IR songs have some sort of emotional effects, especially the ones sung by SPB, most people follow the "Old is Gold" rule.

Why Ilayaraja's Music Does Not Appeal to the Younger Generation???!! - Because it's meant for those who want to hear the REAL music. Only matured people can understand what a real music is? In the younger age, u cant differentiate between a synthesised music that attracts u for a while and a good music that mesmerises u forever. Grow up, kids!!! U will definitely know how good IR's music is!

Most people's imapct in music comes when they are young. It is sort of the music they grew up on. Therefore "music for mature people" do not hold water. Music is for everybody.
When one loses appeal, the best saving grace would be to claim exclusivity. :)
Going by the list ROTFL provided above, it can be easily seen what is popular among the youth of today.

>>> but IR songs have some sort of emotional effects, especially the ones sung by SPB, <<<
The gist of Raghu's post is always SPB...i remember there was a thread on the forumhub about who is a better singer Lata or Asha. And Raghu's response was "spb is better than rafi". ROTFL!!
So even here though the thread asks: "why IRs music doesnt appeal to younger people?", he directly or indirectly refers to SPB.

Gowri, u miss the point!! Do u think that a kid or a young guy, can easily understand the great carnatic music???!! It's a kind of music that u can hear if u know it or atleast understand it!!!
And reg the list given by ROTFL, it changes as time goes by....
When KM( kadhalukku Mariyaathai ) got released, Ennai Thaalaata Varuvaalo was everyone's MOST WANTED SONG!!!! Can u deny that point??? Does it still mean IR lost his younger gen crowd??? If he does the same sort of song, surely the crowd will again cheer up!! For that he has to do that sort of films! U cant expect the same kind of song in movies like kutty and kasi!!!!
