sk, senty -
I was certain about the Sudhakar factor, but after reading your posts I am not so sure anymore! Sudhakar or Vijay Babu or...The faces and the films (and there were many with the two)are now a blur. I regret the emphasis.
Saravanan -
You are on your own now :-)

An article about Bombay Dreams in TIME magazine. There's an article about ARR too.
(I read the print copy.)
Any discussion on this -if at all- can be done away from this thread. Sorry for the mess.

wow! what a splendid song typical late 70s type TFM SPB soulful solo. I dont remember listening to this song earlier even once, and it captivated me at the first listening itself.
One thing I could feel is that there is a lot of similarities between this song and "vaNNam kOnda veNNilavae vaanam vittu vaarayO" again a SPB solo from sigaram. Typically when SPB sings the lines near the end of both charanams("neer adiththi neer vilagi paarthadhillai bhoomiyil"). I think this SG song might have been in SPB's mind when he tuned "vaNNam kOnda".

btw, i could not resist a digression
the line "thaamarayai malaravaikkum aadhavanin udhayamamma" rings a bell in my mind especially during this election period ;-)
sorry about it bb.

DeshA?Tilak KamodA?
According to Hindustani raga sites Desh and Tilak Kamod have virtually the same origin and hence it is logical to fix the mother raga as khamaj(Harikambodhi).Desh is marked as the closest equivalant of Kedara GowLai by carnatic musicians. So the mother raga should be 28-Hari Kambodhi.
But carnatic music sites quote Nalinakanti as the the Carnatic equivalant of Tilak Kamod .But Nalinakanthi is a janya raga of 27 -Sarasangi and has a differnt raga lakshana altogether with a distinctly different "Dha"and "Ni" -can somone enlighten?
MSV's änbu vanthathu"from sudarum sooravaLiyum is set to tilak Kamod -experts say.IR is supposed to have used Nalinakanthi for the first time in TFM.Thoongikitrukkara mirugathai thatti ezhupparenO?

First time when I heard this song this morning it sounded like a familiar tune I had heard during my childhood. I was leaning more towards some Ghantasala-Jikki duet in Telugu. But I'm now sure that this is based on the Thyagaraja krithi "veNugaana loluni gana veyi kannulu gaavalane" (to see the one who delights in playing the flute (Sri Krishna) one needs thousand eyes). The similarity is more than just Kedara Gowlai!
http://www.sangeetham.com/tygkritis/vENugAnalOluni.htm
MDs Ramesh Naidu, Rajan-Nagendra, S-G, Satyam (moreso, in Telugu) have come up with some gems once in a while but have not been original on quite a few occasions, IMHO. Neverthless, a great tune and fine rendition by SPB.

bb,
It must be 'Roman Holiday'. That is the movie which starred Gregory Peck as the reporter who falls in love with a princess in disguise.
Do you know how the movie 'Chandrodhayam' ends ? I am just curious to know after I saw that it was a remake.
Saravanan,
That was a lovely song. Thank you.

Sudhakar is the hero..Radhika is the main heroine(she is maragadham). This song is picturised on sudhakar and Aruna.

Song of the Day: veLLi nilaavinilE from sonnathu neethana.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/vellinila.rm
- A rare song sung by Jayachandran. Music by Ilayaraja.
- I don't know much about the movie or the song. The film was released in 1979 or 1980. Jayachandran's voice sounds so different and fresh in this short song.

Good choice, bb. Among the early hits of JC with IR.
Sonnathu Nee Thaana (1978/ Vijaya Raja Pictures) starred Vijayakumar, Sumitra and perhaps Jaiganesh too. Two other good songs in the film were 'Alankara ponoonjalae, azhagaadum pooncholaiyae' by MV (with Jency's humming); and 'Yaegum deivam angae thoongum selvam ingae'- a lilting solo by VJ.
'Velli nilavinilae' was filmed on Vijayakumar, trying to pacify a petulant child.

aaha..wonderful song. superb singing by JC. I remember reading a snippet which claimed SPB said he envied JC's voice. I wonder why not. Two songs back to back of SPB and JC with mesmeric singing skills in display. In this song, one can feel that his voice is always ready for some complex sancharas, but he teasingly finishes the song with simplicity. Orchestration is agmark IR. Tune is slightly MSV-ish though.

This was a regular long time back in Vividh bharathi, remember chatting about this song with Udhaya recently. This one has been lying buried for a while, good choice.
Amongst IR songs, Jayachandran was excellent in "oru vaanavil pole" too which I hope would be SOTD sometime. A terrific song.

Thanks for the rare IR-Jayachandran number!
Jayachandran sounds oh-so-great! I miss his presence in TFM these days very much. I heard him sing on a Malayalam channel recently and he is still in great form, and age is not catching up with his voice, unlike Yesudas.
Will we get a treat from IR-JC sometime soon?
Hope!

I was singing along with this song and just as the song concluded I realised that it could seamlessly blend into IR's "KaN malargaLIn azhaipidazh"

i think JC has sung in Manasinakkare IR's most recent mallu movie...he also had a nice number in Yathra Mozhi...
