From late ninities till now, there has never been a singer who has established him/herselfs, like our gems did, none of them have a perfect tamil accent, most of them can not sing at all, NONE of them are versatile, NONE of them have a good voice, except, Sujatha, Anuradha Sriram, Reena & Karthick, we have songs with silliest lyrics like "Apple penNe neyaroo, ice cream, blah blah", then we have "strawberry kanNe", where are we going from here, from bad to worse??

Speaking of lyrics, there are a few good songs coming out as well.
Look at ethilum ingu from Bharathy, nee paarththa parvai and isayil thodanguthamma from Hey Ram, vidai kodu engal nade from KM etc.
But the problem is, a lot of times the singers spoil the lyrics with their bad diction. But the above mentioned songs are exceptions.
However, I agree with you, the good songs are the exceprion not the rule.

Karthik what a joke, He lacks lot of things like expressions, involvement, melody in voice. He is not a singer whom we can love to hear again and again. Only thing is he is better than Udit and Co.

Well, many of us have this concern.. What I am wondering is this. Take SPB, KJY, TMS and Seergazhi. They were all greats in their time. (SPB is great anytime) But look at their 'varisugal'. Spb Charan/pallavi, Vijay (kjy's son), TMS Selvakumar, TMS Paulraj and siva sithambaram. Where are they? I am sure they are all suppose to have good voice and capacity to sing any kind of song. Why our present MDs dont use them including IR? Whey their fathers did not use their influence to get chance for their sons? Arasiyal varisugal, hero/heroine varisugal ellam famous aagi irukkirargal.. why not singer's varisugal?

So, whom do you think is responsible for this so-called sad state of TFM ? the MD's who give chances to these kind of singers, or the TFM fans who think that they are really enjoyable and make such songs big hits (and encourages the MDs to continue that pattern)?

Well said, I also had the same feeling about SPB.Charan, KJY.Vijay, SPB.Pallavi, they are all way better than Udit, sukvindher, hari & CO, but these youngster's should be given a chance to prove them self’s, while they are young, so Charan can become another phenomenal SPB!
Charan sings quite a bit in Telugu, like Vijay sings in mallu, but in Tamil, we have the worst singers with irritating voice, can some one point out the different in voices in the following pair?
1) Hari & Srinivas - both sing through their nose
2) Udit & Kumar - what a disgrace, @ least Kumar has never sung in Tamil, thank god 4 that.
3) Unni & Harish - both very soft voices, feminine voices
4) Shanker-is Ok, but only for fast songs, he cannot sing any thing else, esp. melodies.
There is not going to be another SPB, really sad indeed.
I do not think any of the singers will survive for another 2 years, compare this to the 36 astonishing years, when SPB ruled Tamil & telugu, while KJY ruled the mallu's for 36 years

I know that u think, ARR is the reason for this, but he did intoduce few qulity singers like Bombay Jayshree, Nithya shree, but I agree majority of his introduction turned out to be really bad!! :((

a. Hariharan
b. Unni menon
c. Unnikrishnan
d. Sujatha (big break, i mean)
e. Harini
f. Anuradha S
g. Karthik (yup, Nenthukiten was recorded b4 manja kaatu)
h. Nithyashree
i. Bombay Jayashree
they r big names now in TFM!
in fact there r more. i , he he, kinda forgot!

Unni menon, nithyashree and bombay jayashreee, Reena -- These are NOT big names in TFM - They have done just less than 10 songs each.
Sujatha -- great singer. But is not a new singer.. in fact she came to TFM even before chitra. So take her out of the list.
Karthik -- long way to go. Currently he is one of the busiest singers, I guess.
Harini - Good singer. Again long way to go.
Hariharan and unni k -- They were big once but right now. imo, Hariharan has great voice but he sings all the songs almost the same way, as if he is not interested to sing.. but just for money.

forgot to mention.
Unni menon is not a new singer either. He probably could have sung more than 10 songs because sang his first tamil song in Oru kaithiyin dairy (his name was vijay at that time) but he was out for a long time and reintroduced in roja. -- But anyway, there is nothing unusual about his voice.

Unnikrishnan, Hariharan, UnniMenon sometimes sing like girls. Their voice sound like girls voice.
There is no "Ganeer" in their voice despite the softness. They are sure no match for KJY and SPB.
Let UnniKrishnan and Hariharan sing songs like
Manidha Manidha ini un.. and Raga Deepam Thedum Neram.. We will compare then. Till such time UK and HH should be compared with Nithyasree and other female singers.

Jayachandran, Srikumar, madhu balakrishnan -- they sound like KJY too. That's why I said that unni menon's voice is nothing unusual.
btw, some may object that jayachandran has a different voice.. which is debatable

don't invite trouble from hariharan's fans my friend..bcos there is a lot of fans for him out there.. Even SPB had once mentioned that Hariharan is an asset for TFM... The one only defect that I find in his voice is that he sings all the songs almost in the same manner... For film music, the singer must show some variations..which he certainly lacks. In that sense, there is nothing to beat our great SPB.

NCR and All, According to me it is the MD's responsibility to bring the best out of the singers. Well, I'm aware of how much can be brought out of HH, UM, UK, UN, Srinivas etc. Karthik, HR, Devan etc. can do much more than what we have been hearing now. I want you all to hear the Karthik's song in Mounan Pesiyathe . It is the same guy (HR) who sang Ethilum Ingu Iruppan (Bharathi) sang Theeye Azhaghiya Theeya (Minnale). How much variation between these songs with a lot of perfection. I have a lot of hopes on HR, Karthik and Devan (though I've heared too little Devan songs). Let our MD's realize and start using the real talants instead killing Tamil as well as the listeners. All IMHO.

ARR did a good thing in introucing variety in TFM singing. however good it be, you tend to get bored after listening to the same golden, velvet voices for decades. It always helps to have some variety. I am sure that still those great singers get the songs that they deserve. Nobody can forget them. and look, you start to appreciate those guys more now.

Now guys, when you talk abt all those new singers, think from the aspect of the song situation or mood. Suresh Peters was superb in Chikku Bukku Rayile. Now, dont you come and tell me that his tamil pronunciation was not that good. you know it well when you see the song in the movie. You want the great SPB singing that kind of song ??
One more example is, Kulu Vaaliley. I still think that Udit singing Kulu Vaaliley sounded very different and enjoyable for that kind of tune.
So, the point when a singer is introuced is how were the singers good for that particular kind of song. Harish Raghavendar , in my opinion is an excellent singer. But still ARR havent used him once as yet. that might bcos of the same reason that he hasnt come up with anything that he finds HR might fit in.

that defect you pointed out in HH might be right to an extent. I think he is slowly perfecting the art of expressing emotions now. Earlier, when he was new to TFM, he was not that confortable with the language and hence could not bring out the right emotions (as said by himself in an intvw). Have you listened to his Hindi ghazals ? he is a class act in that and you will realise that it is comfort level in Tamil that was creating problems initally in TFM for him.

i want to know if you guys like Sadhana Sargam (she is one of my favourites) in TFM. though her tamil fluency is not that great (certainly not upto the standard that some guys here expect ) most of her songs are big hits. and she has got one of the sweetest voices i ever heard !! could never forget these lines when she sings ....
ithe azhutham azhutham
ithe anaippu anaippu
vaazhvin ellai varai vendum vendum
vaazhvin ellai varai vendum vendume ....
