I was just thinking of songs which had the sound of a moving train blended into them. I was surprised with the number of songs I could recollect in a flash ! (Was'nt surprised though, that all of them are Ilaiyaraja's :)) The ones that struck me right away are :
* Poovarsam poo poothaachu
* Manjal nilavukku inru ore sugam
* Idhayame (from Aduthaathu Albert)
* Goods vandiyile
* Interlude in Poongatru pudhiranadhu
I'd like to know more such songs, and by other MDs as well...

There is a wonderful train song in the movie,
Raman Eththanai Ramanadi. Sivaji is a saappaattu
raaman in a village who falls in love with KR Vijaya,
who is the daughter of a rich man (who else but
MN Nambiar). But Nambiar laughs at Sivaji's love and
thorughly insults him. Sivaji, as in all TFs,
goes to the city, becomes a famous film hero
overnight, and comes back to the village to seek
KRV's hand. On the way, in the train, he dreams
as if KRV walks into the train and sings a song
to him. The song is a wonderful melody tuned
by MSV and sung by PSusheela. It goes like:
chiththirai maadham powrNami nEram
In the charaNam, mellisai mannar has beautifully
blended the sounds of the moving train with PS's
singing. Easily, it is one of the best solos by
PS.

It is a very good topic - because I love trains!!
In vAzvu en pakkam, heroine Sujatha frustrated
by her husbanduuu Muthuraman's comment - goes to
Thirupathy to pay a visit to Venky - by train.
The song comes from the background in MSV's voice -
Thirupathi malail ERukinrAy
thirumbum pozuthE amaithivarum
The whole BGMusic of that song has train saththam.
In Motor Sundaram PiLlai - Nagesh/Sachu song
goes like: (viswa! etntha pAttu OKyA ??)
kubu kubu kubu kubu nAn engine
dagu dagu dagu dagu nAn vaNdi
Is there a train saththam in the starting of the song
chinnath thAyavaL thantha rAjAvE from ThaLabathy
????
Have you noticed the "manasa izukkum" sound when the
train goes over a bridge (esp. crossing the Kaveri/Kollidam bridge) - athai yArAvathu musicpaduthify irukkAngaLA ??

Keerthi:
That was you, My God, I am so happy to see your posting here.
Bones, Naanum antha "MSP" paattai nenachein but was not sure if it has any Train sound in that song except what ALR and LRE says as part of the song. But that song is a classic - very popular in those days, right? "Engine Vegham, Ilamaiyin Vegham, Yennpinnaaley Thodaraathey; Engine Mattum Rail Aagaathu, Yennaivittu Pogaathey, Ada Yennaivittu Pogaathey".
Also, there is a song in( I think ) "Magudam" where Sathyaraj and Banupriya sings from a house located near a railway track and they sing this song while trains keep going back and forth and the house rocks during those times. The song is something like "Raathiri Neram Railadi Oaram, Yemma, Yemma, oohoong, Ada Vaamma Vaamma oohoong" subg by Mano & SJ and Music by IR.
There is a song in "Payanam" where there is a background song sung by MSV and in the foreground will be people travelling in a train. Anybody remember this song? Something like "Payanam, Payanam...."

on: Fri Apr 3 10:23:51 EST 1998
Oops, a typo! On the other hand you can say, given the nature of that song, it was rather a "subg"( north Indian kalappada poriyal??? ) than to be called as "sung" :-)))
So, I will leave it up to you all to take it as you want.

What about CHIKKU BUKKU RAILU from Gentleman.....Everytime I get in the Tubes(Underground system in London), I remember this song, as the train sample is amazingly accurate.....Wonder if ARR actually took it from here.....

How about "Chittirai Maadham Powrnami Neram
Muthu Rathangal Orrvalam Pogum.."--
PSusheela singing for KRVijaya in "Raman Ethanai Ramanadi"--
this song has sounds imitating a steam engine's choo choo, an engine whistle and the rhythmic sound of a train compartment moving on a (non-welded!) track.
- From: T. Pattabhiraman (@ yacko.crystal.ca)
on: Wed Apr 8 16:56:06 EDT 1998
Oops, I just realized that the Raman Ethanai
Ramanadi song has been already mentioned.
Anyway, another one from Pachai Vilakku
is "Oli mayamaana ethirkaalam" by TMS.
The song seems to have two versions,
one (heard on the radio) without a steam engine
choochoo and another (the film version?)
with the choochoo (distinctly heard in the
background when TMS sings).

If I remember correctly, Yarr azalaithatu kanvu raniya? I don't remember the movie name, but the cast includes mohan and bhanupriya. The story takes place in a railway station and few other songs include the 'sound of train' in the background. I think IR is the music director for that movie
