I sent the following message to be added as a permanent topic. Should that fail how about it as a temporary topic?
Hi guys,
I recently discovered this page and have been contributing extensively ever since. How about a permanent thread for discussing famous analogies: metaphors, similies, expressions, ironies, etc. in Tamil songs? For example: this would be a thread where I will share my favorite analogy for a smile, "Kaiyalavu Pazhutha Maathulai, Paalil
Neyalavu Padarntha Punnagai" from "Vizhiyilae Malarnthathu" written by Panchu Arunachalam.
As great as the discussion topics are in this site, I feel lyrics and song writers should get more attention.
A fan forever,
Udhaya

Yes, why not?
Guess even the most absurd similies (like Digitallin sedukkia kural, Elizabet Tailor Magal...) will also find their place here...
One song which comes to my mind instantly is "Azhage Azhagu Devathai" from RAja PArvai.. Every line is a simili. Who is the lyricist?

Neels:
The rAjapArvai song azhagE azhagu was penned by kaNNadhAsan.
Topic:
Some of the classic descriptions from AlayamaNi starting with kamban kaNda seedhai undhan thAi allavA and one in a similar vein oru puRam pArththAl midhilaiyin mythili from apoorva rAgangaL. The other classic is the pallavi of malarndhu malarAdha pAdhi malar pOla from pAsamalar.
Another varuNanai:
allith thaNdu pOlavE
thuLLi Adum mEniyai
veLLi nilA aLLik koNdadhO
adhil puLLi mayil paLLi koNdadhO
(nilavum malarum pAdudhu from thEnilavu)
And, how can this be forgotten?
AgAyap pandhalilE pon oonjal AdudhammA
(ponnoonjal)
One more about the moon:
mAmAvin poNNukku AgAya mEgangaL
sElai kattip pArkkudhu AsaiyOdu
nAn pArkkak koodAdha pollAdha vAnaththil
mAman magaL pOgudhu nANaththOdu
(sandhanaththil nalla vAsam eduththu from prAptham)
A metaphorical reference using the moon from Ramu:
nilavE ennidam nerungAdhE
nee ninaikkum idaththil nAn illai
...........
moodiya mEgam kalaiyum munnE
nee pAda vandhAyO veNNilavE
A metaphorical expression depicting the hero's utter dejection:
enadhu kaigaL meettum pOdhu veeNai azhugindRadhu
enadhu kaNgaL thazhuvum pOdhu malarum sudugindRadhu
(engE nimmadhi from pudhiya paRavai)
A metaphorical reference to the poor-little-rich-boy-hero by the heroine:
kalaimagaL kaipporuLE unnai gavanikka ALillaiyO
vilai illA mALigaiyil unnai meettavum viral illaiyO
(vasantha mALigai)

Kanchana, thanks a lot for bringing to mind all these treasures. Especially the excerpt from "Nilavum Malarum", it was exquisite.
I have some more:
"Vellinilave vilakkai erium kadalthan engal veedu"
(Vaali from "Karai mel pirakkavaithan" in Padagotti)
"Vizhigal medaiyam imaigal thiraigalam
Paarvai naadagam arangil aerutham"
(T.Rajendar from the movie Kilinjalgal)
"Thalaiyai virithu thennai poradutho
aethanai ninaithu elaneeraadutho
Kanni unnai kandathaalo
Thannai ennikondathaalo"
(Kannadhasan from "Iyarkayennum" in Santhi Nilayam)

NEELS, UDAYA, KANCHANA:
Am I in the right track?
- From: Bharat (@ dsi.mids.com)

One interesting aspect about the song "Ponmaalai Pozhuthu..." by Vairamuthu. At first he personifies the sky as feminine:
Vaana MagaL NaaNugiraaL, Veru Udai pooNugiraaL
Later, the sky becomes an "it":
Vaanam enakkoru Bodhi Maram, Naalum Enakk "Athu" Seithi Tharum
I found the first comparison (analogy?) beautiful, the changing of the sky's colors can indeed be compared to a woman wearing different clothes. But I couldn't really get the point of the second one.

Manisekaran, you are absolutely on track. Thanks for all these classics, what a memory. It must have taken you an hour to type all this. If you could, please include the songwriter's name in the future excerpts.

Udhaya:
Your descriptor "exquisite" is so apt for the allith thaNdu pOlavE from thEnilavu; that verse is from the song chinna chinna kNNilE. I think kaNNadhAsan penned the lyrics for all the songs I listed above.
Manisekaran:
Thank you for reminding us of all those songs, especially Adai katti vandha nilavO. Beautiful song by TRMahalingam(?) Who was the MD for that movie?
thanga radham vandhadhu is one of my all-time TFM favorites. Besides the lyrics, the execution of AbOgi by MSV, BMK's voice and PS's voice all add to this song.
Bharat:
I too have often wondered about the lines you've mentioned from the IR-VM classic idhu oru pon mAlaippozhudhu.
In the lines vAna magaL nANugiRAL, vERu udai pooNugiRAL VM is obviously referring to the changing colors of the evening sky. In the lines vAnam enakkoru bOdhi maram, nALum enakkoru sEdhi tharum, does VM use vAnam as a symbolic reference to the world under it and the vast Universe beyond? Is he implying that the Universe/world around offers a new truth each day leading to enlightenment of sorts??!!

Back to kaviyarasar kaNNadhAsan...
The intricate wordplay around the analogies in this verse from thOL kaNdEn in "idhayakkamalam" makes it worth repeating again:
thEdi vandha thingaL
thingaLil chevvAi
chevvAiyil veLLi
sErththeduththEn aLLi
An equally intricate wordplay around analogies from pArththEn siriththEn from veera abhimanyu:
kodith thEn ini engaL kudith thEn
ena oru padith thEn pArvaiyil kudiththEn
oru thuLi thEn sindhAmal kaLiththEn
The following duet is done in a question-answer format; each verse is a comparison. Movie: kAththirundha kaNgaL

In the following song kaNNadhAsan uses comparisons aptly to suit the situation, where a husband comforts his phsically handicapped wife. Movie: ellAm unakkAga (The husband's lines are italicised)
