I was just wondering about the usefulness of songs in movies and felt that in most cases the picturisation did not complement the songs. However, there appear to be some song sequences which stand apart by their depiction of the song in progress. Most of these would have songs in the background, I guess. But their might also be some where the hero and heroine singing makes sense to the movie and the lyrics. Care to help me build a comprehensive list ?

Thanks a lot guys for the active interest.
BB:
Thanks for the "years". I would sure like to have all of them. BTW, any ideas to what kind of categorization would make such a collection fully enjoyable ?
Does anyone know if I can create my own DVD ? I mean if I record these songs on regular video cassettes can I have them transferred onto a DVD someplace ? Do any of you have any of these movies or songs on video already ?
TFM Team:
I see a paid ad these days for a mail video sales site. Would they custom record music videos ? That way we can be sure that the whole thing would be legal and would save us a lot of time as well. There was an enquiry in DF from someone as to what kind of movie collections we would like to buy. That thread must be in the archives, I suppose. Well, here is a collection that I would certainly love to buy !

the kind of categorization can be:
1. based on the period of the song. i for one would certainly not like to see chinna chinna aasai with chinna chinna kannanukku:-)
2. based on the nature of the song. some of the songs mentioned are BGM songs, wonderfully filmed, whereas others are straightforward love songs. there are some dance numbers which can be put separately.
3. other interests like MD/actor (more importantly, actress:-))) )
4. what songs u can see with family and what u don't want to!

BTW, copying to DVD will be a big mess.. getting the songs to a DLT and then doing mpeg compression and burning the DVD is a humongous task. i don't know of writable DVD drives available commercially.

Srinath:
I've heard that some tamil DVDs are released by Pyramid, but they are not 16:9 aspect ratio. If they convert the VCD to DVD, it wouldn't make any difference in terms of quality. Let me ask you this: How many tamil movies can be released in DVD? Perhaps, you can count them. I would say about 70% of Tamil movies does not require DVD, in fact, VHS is good enough. Moreover, not many movies come with DD/DTS, then why would you wanna use DVD? Is there any advantages.

I have no idea why I need Tamizh movies on DVD. Perhaps the fact that Gateway convinced me into going in for a DVD/CD-ROM drive with my computer has something to do with it ! :-))) In any case DVDs weren't very watchable on my 15" monitor.

Srinath,
Being the old fashioned OLD guy that I'm, I think that marking the videos by timeline is the way to go. This way we get the progressive (or regressive) trends in music along with the accompanying history of the age. Yeah, I know, quite a boring idea, but there you have it.

Srinath: Just before u wrap up ur list I have two more additions to the list. Im not sure whether they feature in the lsit already, cos I didnt have the patience to run through it.
1. Mazhai varudhu varudhu kudai kondu vaa - Raja Kaiya vachcha
2. KannaalE kaadhal kavidhai sOnnalE ennakkaaga - Athma.
They are pretty well picturised, those diffused ligts etc.
Are u planning to get all this done in India?. I read from ur earlier posts that ull be there sometime in two months from. Iam planning to be there in May-June. May be if u could get this done I can be probably the first to get a copy of.

CM:
I am also planning to be there in May-June but my trip is not confirmed yet. I'll try to sort this list over the weekend. I think someone else has also suggested Atma but I don't remember seeing Raja Kaiyya Vacha in the list. Let me first find out the feasibility of getting this recorded in a such a short span of time. In fact, it would be nice if any DFers in Madras can find out if this can be done at your neighbourhood video store ! The only thing that worries me is that the quality may not be good (both picture AND sound) if we get it recorded in some little known place. When I am in India, I can find out for myself, but if anyone can get some info right away, please do, so that I can have a headstart when I get there! Thanks !

Srinath:
Have you heard of the "Isai Thedral" series of video cassettes? They have pretty decent recordings of old/new songs (recently I watched one that had "Kannukkule Yaaro" from "Kai Kodukkum Kai" -- not that this is a well-picturized song, but it's still one that I haven't seen in a while). If that quality is acceptable, you could dub songs from them. Not being too high-tech, I'd gladly settle for this quality.
BTW, has anyone suggested categorization based on mood?

Srinath!
Has Anjali songs been already included in the list? Please do so if not done already! That was one of the musical movies of 90's that made my hair rise and even made me cry!

eden:
Yes, almost all songs from Anjali have been included !
Bharat:
My current idea of categorizing is Theme, sub-cat. by mood, sub-cat by period. That way, we can have a collection which shows the same theme in different moods in different periods of time. I feel this is the best because that way we won't find the collection monotonous (by mood alone - how'd you like to spend a full hour listening to soga songs ? ;-)). The period could make a subtler difference. The collection could look like
Theme: Love
1.Happy - '76-'80
2.Happy - '81-'85
3.Happy - '86-'90
4.Sad - '76-80
5.Sad - '81-'85
The depiction of the same mood for the same theme in different periods is also best brought out by this kind of a sorting. I know it is easier on paper than in actuality. But hey, an idea is a start, all right ? :-)

I would like to give my 2 cents too.
1. Indha minminikku kannil - Kamal and Sridevi on a romantic car drive with receding city lights blending well with the interlude music. The intoxicating opening humming starts with a night club dancer , crooning and finally rounds up with that inimitable peels of laughter by SJ and Sridevi
2. Oho megham vandhado(Mouna raagam) - One of those very few decently picturized rain songs which stands out also due to the nonchalant mood apparent thruout the song
3. Illanenje vaa(Vanna vanna pookal) - a nice walk thru the road of nature
4. Ninaithaal inikkum - (Kalyanaraman)Picturization and the music conveys the predawn mood aptly with lovely Sridevi dreaming about her prince
